I'm not a math geek, so someone check my numbers, please.

New Orleans had its 62nd murder of 2007 yesterday. This from a city with a population of roughly 223,000 post-Katrina.

The number of Iraqi civilians murdered so far this year is 6,523. This from a population of 26,783,383.

According to my calculations, the New Orleans murder rate is 1 for every 3,597 residents. The Iraqi murder rate is 1 for every 4,106 residents.

So, is it safer to live in Iraq then in New Orleans?

It's sad to even think of it that way. I love New Orleans and have seriously thought of retiring there, but the cost of property since Katrina and the crime rate makes its it a very unwelcoming place. When will New Orleans vote for mayor again, and is there even a chance that someone will be elected that has the intelligence to change things?

I want to know why no one in New Orleans is doing anything about it. Are they just totally helpless? Is the entire police force eaten up with corruption? Are they waiting for the bad guys to kill each other off? What's going on?

Heck, it's safer to live in a hole full of rats than it is to live in New Orleans.

You get about 5 months of attention from the American public. If you can't get your sh!t straight by then, you're on your own.

You're right about that. We visited New Orleans three times in the first year following Katrina. We couldn't believe the devastation -- and as the months rolled on, we couldn't believe how bad it still was! The American public is impatient to move on; and, while they were glued to the early images coming from New Orleans, they lost interest with the rebuilding.

There's so much history there, so much "color," that it's a shame people are still struggling so even now.

But don't you worry, Jesse Jackson's in town, and he and Nagin will get it all sorted out.

Yeah, Right!

Yeah, Right!
I think it is an evil city and the French were fools to build there and the British were fools to leave it there and the Americans are downright stupid in trying to rebuild it. Salt the land, burn the town, and let the delta reclaim the evil.

Louisville, KY is catching up with New Orleans. If the police in Louisville, such as: shoot a criminal caught in the act, in self defense. Regardeless if they die or just wounded, the police either lose their job or they are sued. Then we wonder why crime is up.
The mayor of Louisville is trying to cover up because of all the visitors, esp. celebs this week for the Derby. People on the outside donot have a clue.
No, I never attend the Derby, never.

Here's the truth!

Whites DO NOT CARE if blacks kill each other!

BLACKS do not care if blacks kill each other!

All throughout history, blacks have never gotten the death penalty for killing other blacks!

Whites expect blacks to kill each other, however when a black kills a white, then, "we got to do something about this"!

This is the garbage left over from Jim Crow days!

Many blacks HATE the cops, and the Justice System!

Cops represent the white man, and the Justice represent the white man also, therefore, blacks do NOT trust them!

I say, let the blacks and kneegrows kill each other, very much as they did in Rwanda!

Then the problem will be solved once and for all!

It is my understanding that Detroit, LA and Chicago ranks about the same if not a tad higher than New Orleans.
But I agree, The entire country of Iraq would be safer than the town of N.O.

By confiscating guns (most of which have not been returned), they have denied the law-abiding residents of the city to protect themselves. Thank the low-life mayor and his corrupt lackeys in the NOPD.

To use the New Orleans mayor's terminology, most "chocolate towns" have high rates of murder and other violent crimes.

Must be the combination of sugar and caffeine.

As for the NOPD, they make the NYPD and LAPD look like a troop of Eagle Scouts.

Get involved with the criminal class in NOLA, and your life is very much in danger. The criminals there have ALWAYS been very vicious and deadly, they've been #1 a few times before now. It's only being noticed because of the circumstances.

Daily Horoscope for February 11

Libra

With The Moon still moving through your sign, this may be a day of some emotional ups and downs. Family responsibilities loom large. Emotional life will be a key matter for some. For others, there will simply be a lot to do around the home. Take some time to have a long hot bath or a little self-nurture. While doing so, make sure you run a check list on how you're feeling.
