I won't even let my dogs in my back fenced area during deer season and I live in town! When I am out hunting in the woods I always shoot dogs. Why? Because dogs and cats that run wild kill game animals. In the State where I live it is against the law to use dogs to hunt deer. And the dog and cat owners don’t give a fat rats ass about Bambi or thumper. So keep your dog or cat on a leash, I think you have laws for that don’t you? And I am not a moron. I have never shot anything that I didn’t know what it was.

I've learned more about conservation from hunters than anywhere else in my life. A few hunters give the rest of us a bad reputation. There are so many deer in south Alabama that if we didn't hunt them, the deer would literally "overrun" our towns and cities. Now, the topic at hand. I know very little about bears, but one was hit by a car on the hwy approx. 45 miles from my home. This worries me because I spend alot time outdoors and I have heard and read some horr stories. Any advice from those of you in bear country?

The issue here is development. It has nothing to do with hunting. It is very sad what happened and I'm sure that if the girl's mother had gun she would have shot that bear as would any of you. I am a bow hunter I do not hunt with guns at all because there is no challange.and the money that hunters pay for there lis. goes to protect the animals that are hunted. And that is why there are hunting seasons so you do not shot a mother bear, deer,or what ever you maybe hunting. You should all take trip to your local slaughter house and see what takes place there by the way I've never heard of a cow a lamb or a pig attacking a person but I maybe wrong oh and by the way my I.Q is 187 go figure.

I live a few miles away from the scene of the attactk. We need to be able to hunt these bears and get rid of them.
What many people don't understand is that they bring all, I repeat, Bring ALL the aggressive bears to Polk County and release them, so the tourist, who don't seem to understand that Bears are not a tourist attraction, that come to the populated areas of east tn, like gatlinburg, pigeon Forge, etc, don't get ate.
Unfortuantly, since 1996 whitewate olympic events, which took place a few miles away from the bear attack, as seen an increase in tourist, like the fmaily that was attack.
These bears are not the common, wild bears. They are bears that have been fed by the tourist, and want more KFC or snickers, etc. After they show agression in the rest of the populated park, they bring them here, to polk county.
I am proud to say, if a bear is on my porch, in my yard, law or no yard barring it, I am going to kill it. Period.
And Brett, I had a Pig attack me, and I called the Boy Scouts, They came, Shot it, buried it in the ground, and cooked it. It bit through my steel toed boots. My wife got bit by a sheep, and my son got kicked by a cow. 187 or not. There is not a farmer that you could talk too that wouldn't have simular stories.

Brett, development issue. Polk County is an extremely rural county, majority, undeveloped. However, the fact that POLk County has been a community that became a drop off refuge for crazy bears, well you are half right. but hey, the tree huggers are the ones that cried don't kill them with a a needle in captivity, peacefully. Instead, let them run rampant and kill the locals and visitors.

shoot dogs, sick. when i moved to east tenn 17 years ago i bought 180 acre farm. i used to let the locals hunt on my land, untill they shot 4 of my dogs over a period of 3 years. this was on my land. now i don't allow anyone to hunt or fish on my land because of these so called sportsmen.no, i am not a tree hugger. my dad was a game warden at fort bragg n.c. for 10 years, and we live on the reservation at mott lake in a cabin and know how to hunt and trap clean my kills.i don't hunt now because i am afraid of being shot by the so called sportsman who uses a sniper weapon that was built with intention of killing human beings at 2500 yards or more and has a 20 round clip hanging out of it. those types of weapons are for home protection or war. next they will be using rpg's. if your going to hunt and be sporting about it use a single barrel shotgun or a black powder rifle and give the animal at least a chance to survive if you miss the first shot. i mean dumping a clip of 308 or 30-06 at a deer, what the ----!! trying to kill and field dress by shooting him out of skin? and by the way, i'm a combat vet from the marines, so no crap about the romantic view on killing. the animal i hunted could shoot back. so if you get a thrill from shooting your neighbors dogs, then maybe you should try the marines, they will provide you with weapons and ammo and a free ride to the kill zones. but i doubt anyone who would shoot someones stray dog woulf have the guts to do that. i wonder how you would fill if you young'uns do slipped his lease and some ----head shot him. you need help with your inferiority complex. the marines can help with that to. hope you can find some communist dogs to shoot someday, nothing like having an ak 47 busting caps all around your ass. gives you a whole new out look on the perspective of live and let live. simer fi you jerk.

But to imply that bears or elephants for that matter take "revenge" is absolutely absurd. They are animals and should be treated with cautious respect as such. Perhaps, the bear was protecting something. Such as a food source and saw the people as a threat. There...you have it.

Eric, First I apologize to every hunter out there for you as you are a complete idiot. Eric people have been hunting since the beginning of time and will continue until the end of time. Game laws are in place to protect society from overcrowding animal populations. Without hunters there would be thousands of animal related vehilce accidents each year that could possibly result in human death. Now maybe for one minute you should remove your head from whatever location you have it planted right now and think about what you are saying. You say that hunters have no right to kill animals, well do you eat meat Eric? Didn't a cow die to put that BigMac in your mouth? Unless you are a complete vegetarian and wear nothing leather then you too are contributing to animals dying! Wake up Eric and keep your ignorant ideas in that tiny little brain of yours.

My mom and dad stil live on a 300acre farm in west TN. I deer hunt there every year. Twice I've been out in our woods with my dad and heard a growl, turn to see what it is, and see a dog. One was a brindle pitbull and the other was a doberman-mix. They were both shot dead. Stray neighbor dogs on our land? I doubt it. No collars or tags. Most likely a city dweller couldn't handle them anymore and thought it too cruel or an embarrassment to take them to the dog pound. Instead, they dump them off on the road in front of our land. They get hungry and turn wild out in the woods. We've also had to shoot another dog chasing our horses. We didn't want our $2000 horses ending up hitting and getting butchering on a barbwire fence over a worthless dog. Don't blame land-owner & hunters for having to do what's necessary to protect their livestock and themselves from "cute puppies" gone bad.

I find it pathetic where priorities are in favor of animals rather then human beings. We are at the top of the food chain for a reason are we not ? sorry to say if i had to make a choice between a cute cuddly little animal and a baby, a toddler, a mother, a father and all of the human race, that cute cuddly little animal would be history. with the topic of over crowding the animal, thats sadt hat they are being forced out of their habitat, but its even sadder to know that there are people who think we should all be overcrowded so one animal can have its recommended roam space.
Many prayers for the poor family of this little girl, I hope the 2 year old brother heals soon and the mother.!! That's humanity , and if people would start caring for each other more, and stop foccusing on everything else, this world would be a much better place !

My family hunts at open Season and it's to put food on our tables. We can't afford meat out of a store so we hunt and kill every year. For the Bears I blame the parents for being out where bears are at. They need to stay in a crowd of people and do not wonder off from anyone. Bears does kill it's they're nature to kill whatever they can get. We are building houses on land that we took away from them... they are getting where they have no place to go and eat and roam the way they should. Just a few days ago I went with my son to Caves Coves and we a bunch spotted a Bear climbing a tree... well these here people that was raised in the city got out of they're cars and started running toward that bear snapping pictures... Man I holler you are crazy people no wonder the Bears kills they make them do it. These out of towners that was raised around cities don't know nothing about being raised in the country. They are stupid and got no sense... they go crazy when they see a Bear, Deer, or Bobcat no wonder they end up getting hurt or killed. I don't blame the Bears I blame the stupid people that runs toward them. That is the people that needs to keep they're asses away from wild life. Bears needs they're spaces so does any wild animal. They will kill no matter what it takes to protect what belongs to them. So if you get mad at my post who cares... Just grow up and stop whining over people getting kill over bears.. it happens when they are not more carefull. Some people just ain't got a lick of sense when it comes to wild life. You that is raised in the city all your like needs to get a brain and use it. OUCH!!!! I bet that hurt.

Animal activists don't seem to understand that we would be OVERRUN with wild animals if there wasn't a season on them. More and more people are KILLED just driving down the road when they hit a deer, bear, etc. Keep your mouth shut, if you do not know the circumstances!!! We are sorry about this innocent little girl. Animals do kill and it isn't because of some big, bad hunter! GET A GRIP!

But you do not take children out in the woods and wonder off from others. No one can blame the bear killing that child... yes it sad and it hurts. But that Bear was doing what he knows to do. If it was my kid I'd not be out away from others and I'd not turn my back on my kid if I had to chain my child to my waist. Bears will kill no matter what it takes.

Living as you do, outside of the United States, perhaps you are are not aware that our hunters are our most ardent conservationists. Although I do not believe in hunting, even I must admit that licensed hunters in the U.S. are among the most law-abiding citizens, following hunting laws down to the letter. You cannot draw an analogy between the restricted hunting permitted in the U.S. and the rampant poaching and depredation occurring in Africa and other places. What is leading to an increased number of animal attacks in the U.S. is the incursion of human beings into animal territory. This leads to increased contact, as well as more wild animals becoming more desperate as their food sources are destroyed by development. You could attack the overdevelopment occurring in the Tennessee and Georgia, which is destroying animal habitat on an unprecedented scale. However, your assumptions and, as a result, your conclusions are erroneous.

My family would mosty graciously like to thank all the people who have kept us in your prayers. As I read through these I had alot of mixed emotions. I lost my neice to a bear but heaven did gain a beautiful angel. Alexis, from London, you are such a wonderful person with alot of love. Please know that Luke has recovered wonderfully. Susan is still dealing with the loss of Elora. We know that Elora has just left us for a better place. The angels were with her on April 13. We know that God loves us and there is a reason for this. You all have rights to your opions. This is a tragedy that no one will ever know why it happened. All of our family have visited this park many times for many years. Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH for your many prayers and continual prayers. It is great to know that there are so many caring people in this world. God Bless You all.
