I don't think there's too many 12 or 13 year-olds looking to be the next Maytag Man on either side of the border. I think the prize that get's these children running that gauntlet must be something more, and I think we need to be very careful that we don't get these kids hurt. Or worse.
You're right, LIT. We absolutely must do whatever we can to protect these children from being exploited on EITHER side of the border.

Yeah, being around the military for a while, I see it all the time. I don't think I would care if people butchered my name, but still take the time to call people by their given names.'Least when its a regular "Christian-name" like Kat, or roberta. But I have a few friends and family members who who insist on inventing names that they demand I remember.... One extended family member named her son Demarius, and it took me darned near 4 years to get it, especially since we only get to see them twice a year, when they come to Orlando, or we go to Baltimore.....:)
I got so wrapped up in our comments on the topic of racist rhetoric, I forgot to reply to this. I have to say that my 'outrage' at name mis-spelling was genuine and immediate - as I've felt this way my entire life, and have yet to overcome the slight I feel when it occurs repeatedly; especially from relatives, who've known me my entire life, and whose names I unfailingly spell correctly.(But in all honesty, spelling is one of my most practiced skills.)
This is why I referred to it as a pet peeve - a mistake I now recognize as the one I made in that post, rather than the mistake I claimed having made, which was disagreeing with another poster about......well, anything. One of the reasons I like this thread, is that the members are uniformly willing to disagree and yet remain courteous to each other. Usually. At least, more often than not. I can live with that.

My apologies to Lisw, who was the first to subsequently assert that people do make mistakes, and whose post to that effect was completely on target.

Thanks LIT. I think I misspoke in saying that. I believe many on the left, like Biden, aren't racist, but are very racially motivated. But in their efforts to kowtow to people of other races, liberals often do perpetuate racism.
Thanks for the opportunity to clarify, somewhat.
Hey, Higgs.
I watched the clip of Joe in action for the first time last night, and it made me cringe. Painful. And I'm as non-PC as they come. The gall it takes to tell a group of people that they could not succeed, that they'd be reduced to lackeys, if it wasn't for them is unbelievable. The only thing that keeps Biden's remark from being racist is a level of stupidity that renders him incapable of understanding his actions. That clown is the epitome of a career politician that has no clue what life entails outside of his little bubble. If I was obama, I'd of put a pointy hat on his head and sent him to the oval office to stand in the corner.

A little too much power for my tastes. I like my bikes with baseball cards in the spokes.
People around town must really like it, though. She gets a lot of whistles as we cruise around.
I'd certainly whistle if you vroomed past me, if just for the exhilaration of vicarious pleasure!

(I usually do, when I see a motorcycle - they seem like such fun.)

I quit putting the 2 of clubs in the spokes of my bicycle about 2 years ago - it was interfering with my ability to hear the wolf whistles when I wore my culottes. Guess my ears are getting old faster than the rest of me.

Yes, it is. I get a good view of that kind of thing frequently, as my husband and I live with my dad, who is 82.

That is exactly what is wrong with our congress, institutionalization. They really do have no clue after awhile of what it is to be a regular citizen, to work, to own a business, to travel coach and to just take care of themselves. The new ones are full of ideas and plans but pretty soon they just don't get it. We have got to have term limits.

Hello. In the face of admonition to ignore you, and my own inkling that you are basically a troll, I'm going to respond to the first part of your post. I don't really 'trust' the electoral college either, because even after some research on it, I don't understand its method of operation as well as I'd like. It's very confusing. In light of election results over the last 15 years or so, I do tend to think it might be a good idea to re-examine the function and workings of the electoral college, or at the very least to make understanding them the focus of classes offered at the middle school level, rather than reserving that info for graduate-level political science majors. I truly believe most 12-14 yr.-old kids are intelligent enough, that the ones who have a passionate patriotic bent would take those classes. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

You're right Lis. The days of Wodward and Bernstein are long gone. I'd guess that If any journalist had the nerve to Really dig into any pols life would just be labelled a troublemaker.

One thing that got me, about two years ago, the WH press secretary said she didn't know what the Bay Of Pigs was, and they let it slide. How can a press secretary Not know that? Sure, she said later that 'it was a Joke!', but I think she was blowing smoke up our collective A**es.
Very revealing. I agree, Blackheart, anyone over 21 and working for the White House would be expected to know what the Bay of Pigs was, even if s/he didn't know all the details.

<quoted text>The point is that when a Republican does it, it's viewed as imagery, and when a Democrat does it, it's viewed as racism. Even given the admittedly racist opinion of Ds Higgins1, and the (not yet admittedly racist) assertions by Lost in Transition, that blacks who vote on the strictly Democratic ticket are somehow tractable for use by the Democrat party, I see no evidence that you have made any further point here; it's also apparent you're childishly willing to use a disparaging term in reference to me, rather than make any point at all.
I'm disappointed - you seemed a rational person, for the most part.
1) What "takes the country by storm", to use your turn of phrase, is "not one of my biggest concerns" to use another. Yowl and caterwaul to your little heart's content, Lyndi, we simply have a difference of opinion here.
2) Please refer to post #142844. Thank-you.
What I gave you was not an opinion, but an observation. It's not I who created the problem, I was simply stating the facts!

I think so, too, Chris. Shovel's not the type to try to conceal her identity. She might change her nick, I suppose, but even if she did, if she begins posting here again she will identify herself.

My apologies, Mr. Higgins1, if I indicated that you created the problem - especially as an individual offering an 'observation'.

My problem is, I don't subscribe to the opinion that 'blacks' become Democrats as a result of mind control on the part of the DNC, any more than any racial/ethnic group (including 'whites') chooses to align with the Republican party for that reason. The RNC certainly does its level best to convince voters to 'come to their side', as does the DNC, especially every fourth year.

I'm very interested in your 'observations' regarding the recent and ongoing efforts on the part of (overwhelmingly Republican) Congress Persons, in passing voter identification laws.

In observance of very little physical evidence of in-person voter fraud, do you believe voter identification laws more effectively serve the purpose of eliminating what little in-person voter fraud there is, or the purpose of eliminating the influence of the other party's votes?

Lis, you are more right than you know. The phenomenon you describe is not limited to members of Congress, but extends to their staffs, lobbyists and just about anyone else who spends a great deal of time working in D.C. or the government offices close by in Maryland or Virginia. And I'd say that's roughly 1/3 of all the people living or working inside the Beltway. With numbers that high, the attitude you're talking about is REAL and pernicious. To this kind of person, if you're not wearing a suit and/or don't work on Capitol Hill, you might as well be invisible. They quickly forget what it's like to have to struggle to pay bills, arrange for child care, etc. I became aware of this attitude within two weeks of first moving to the area in 1984, and I've met others who noticed it too.

Following Shovel's lead, when Sister Kat said that she lost a family member, I wrote her and gave her my number, telling her the same. We talked for about twenty minutes. I'm going to call again, when I have the time, but right now prepping my son for school uis taking all my time
I'm very glad Shovel reached out to you :)

I'm thinking prime rib - it's his favorite.

Since he did in fact approve of, and, in the company of several other Governors-R, request, waivers for the states with regard to flexibility in dispensation of the federal 'welfare to work' rules, why is he so against them now? For that matter why did he approve them then?
I don't remember what the opinion piece was about as I only glanced through it... I didn't try to commit it to memory.

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Virgo

It's a rather low-key day with a few disappointments to cope with along the way. If you were looking forward to a social event, such as meeting up with friends, it may fail to live up to your expectations. It might even be delayed or postponed through no fault of your own. There could also be problems about how much something is going to cost, forcing you to scale down your plans to make them more affordable.
