If the only measure of success lies in increasing material gain, success is necessarily defined as tangibly gathering more than we once had; and getting “more successful” necessarily reflects having gotten more than someone else has, often by taking it from them. Rules are crafted to make sure no one has an unfair advantage. In a culture which calls ever-growing acquisition "success," making sure no one has an unfair advantage materially, means making sure no one succeeds. It seems to me, that as long as our culture views “success” only in financial and material terms, we will be forever ‘indebted’ to the most financially successful among us. Those individuals, who give the most financially to public efforts, will inevitably believe their own contribution to community effort to be the most important. I believe we, as a culture, would like to think that the golden rule translates into “treat others the way you choose to be treated”– but our culture doesn’t exemplify that notion, as much as it does the notion that “he who has the gold makes the rules.”

Lyndi wrote: I admit to being still stuck on the now old-ish story of "you didn't build that." I found an editorial which speaks to that infamous comment and thought I'd share it here. Here's an excerpt. I took the liberty to trim some of the excess sarcasm, smugness and ad homs from an otherwise thought provoking editorial. ===== "So why does Obama think we owe him? Why do progressives think we should say thank you? Sure, we need the things that help our society and economy grow -- infrastructure, roads, bridges, traffic lights, police, fire, garbage, sewers, hospitals, airports, schools, and national defense. Though much of that could be handled by private enterprise. But Obama and others miss the crucial point -- we (business owners and taxpayers) paid for that with our taxes. We built it! You owe us a debt of gratitude. Without our business taxes, Social Security taxes, payroll taxes, workers comp taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, income taxes and estate taxes (we even pay you after we're dead), there would be no money for all those things that Obama values. Without taxpayers -- especially high income business owners -- you wouldn’t be able to build roads, bridges, highways, schools or airports. Your infrastructure exists because of our hard work. Your schools exist because of rich business owners who pay huge property tax bills. Your Social Security, Medicare, welfare, food stamps and unemployment insurance exist because of business owners paying into the system. We're not dependent on government. Every government program, every government employee and every handout addict are dependent on us. If we don't write the checks, you don't get paid. Like any smart small business owner, government should be treating its customers with honor, respect and gratitude. Many are scaling back. Some are going underground rather than work all day like slaves to pay 60% of our earnings to you. Some are retiring, or at least thinking about it seriously. A poll only days ago reported that 83% of doctors are considering retiring because of ObamaCare. And then there’s the big one -- Americans are leaving for places that treat customers better. Even Obama’s rich elite leftist crowd is refusing to pay the higher taxes he wants. One of the co-founders of Facebook renounced his citizenship and left for Singapore -- where the income taxes are more tolerable at 20% or less and the capital gains taxes are zero. Denise Rich could possibly be one of the top five Democratic contributors in America over the past 20 years. She is tight with the Clintons. Yet she renounced her citizenship, just days ago. She, too, refuses to pay the massive Obama taxes that are on the way. So far it’s a trickle of ultra-rich that are leaving. Soon, if Obama is re-elected, it could become a torrent. I personally know hundreds of business owners exploring their options right now, many ready to leave the moment Obama is re-elected. This is called running a business without any customers. The taxpayers are unhappy. The only ones left will be Obama’s voters -- the takers. But there won’t be anyone left to take from. And when that happens, Obama will learn an important business lesson -- BANKRUPTCY. Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/07/24/sma... In conclusion I might add that the men and women who came here on the Mayflower and first stepped upon it's soil to BUILD a new life, would take great offense at the Presidents comment. No doubt that business owners do a lot. But workers do as much or more. It is also business owners that tell us they have no money for more taxes to pay for maintaining the current infrastructure much less building new. In reaction, the Commonwealth of Virginia will be putting up a ~$5 Toll booth on I-95 between exits 20 - 24 in the near future. I am sure more are to come.

BTW, those services,(roads, lighthouses, schools, etc.), were provided by private businesses and citizens in the days before we had taxes. Interestingly enough, but not surprising, you are wrong again. The National Highway from Maryland to Ohio was funded by Congress and initially signed into law by Jefferson (kind of hard to say the founding fathers did not support this). It also allowed Inns, Taverns and other businesses to rise up along side of it to support workers and travelers. http://history1800s.about.com/od/transportati... Care to discuss funding for early canals?

I think it is the level of inequality that draws attention, not that there is inequality. The difference in a foot race of giving someone a 5 yard headstart and a 50 yard headstart in an 80 yard race. They still get a head start, but how much is needed?

Not saying that there would not be business activity, just that it could not exist as it does today. Interstate highways, the railroad system, and the electric grid all pretty much come in and tell local governments what they are going to do and it is the federal government that allows them to do that. In return, citizens and businesses get more efficient electricity and transportation. Now the electrical grid is in bad need of improvement, but it will not get done until the federal government throws their weight behind it. Look at the Hoover Dam and the Las Vegas area. Look at what public water and sewage has done for business. NO high rise building could exist without them. Lol. At all times its the gov. Hey Okb I might go to the beach in a bit, which way is Washington D.C. from here so I can bow and worship?

And who didn't know this was a Christ centered business? Listening to the radio many I guess. To be honest, Chris, > I < didn't until this news story came out. I've known for around 15 years that they were closed on Sundays (so is Hobby Lobby), but a business can be closed on Sunday and yet not be operated by Christians, let alone Christians who are willing to speak openly in public on controversial matters.

If you want to pray to DC go write ahead, that is your way. Not mine, but we have freedom in this country and I would not dream of stopping you. Unlike you seeing government as evil, as see government as a reflection of the population changing over time.

Population for Los Angeles and surrounding communities is approaching 20 million, and every last one of them drives a car. On the 405, the bottleneck southbound starts after Burbank, and continues into oblivion. Funny, when I was there made three trips out and landed each time at Santa Ana. You go right over 405 and by the third time I remeber thinkning damn I have to get in that mess.

I lack the prerequisite determination to find something, anything wrong in every word uttered by Obama necessary to accept the spin placed on the speech by opponents of the President, and that would include the puff piece on Fox. Yes, we had some rudimentary services before there were taxes as we know them today. So what? That has all the value of a whack job anti-internal-combustion environmental nutjob proclaiming we were able to travel between the coasts before there were trains, cars, and planes. The speech wasn't important enough to warrant this much attention, let alone this whole fake fraudulent never ending controversy about it. Like I said before, if the speech was such a big deal we wouldn't be talking about Romney being better for business because of his experience. Let's move on to the next important thing in the campaign, shall we? The five year old who can repeat what his parents drill into him, or maybe a parrot who can do the same thing. Perhaps "stuck" was a poor choice of words. I was taken aback and thought the editorial {altered to be less childish} was a reasonable and fair response to his comment. I am not a fan of tit for tat but it occurs to me that while the left can have open season on Bush at every opportunity, it seems my far left friends bristle whenever the favor is returned. I grew weary at the hammering Bush took over his pronunciation of the word 'nuclear' for example. Yet when our current Commander in Chief was referring to our "corpse men," the rules changed and not nearly as much emphasis has been placed on that. His slight {cough} error has enjoyed a far shorter life span. Bush got an "OH MY GOD!" Obama got an "oopsie." On a side note, I very much enjoy your posts and look forward to reading them. You are a valuable contributor to Topix.
