China defends rare earths curbs as environmental measure, rejects WTO complaints by US, Europe

A Cabinet official rejected complaints Beijing is using the environment as an excuse to support fledgling Chinese producers of lightweight magnets and other rare earths products by limiting supplies to foreign rivals in violation of its free-trade pledges. Full Story

Theft, cheating and China are no strangers.
In 2010, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) released a study which found that the United States had 13 million metric tons of rare earth elements. If the USA want rare earths then they can start digging. It might even bring the prices down and help reduce their trade deficit.

There are Rare Earth metals in other regions around the globe. The reason China has cornered the market so far is because of their cheap labor to mine it. So now, after the price rises, we'll see other locations begin to mine it, too. The Western US is one location. Japan and some S. American countries, too, have Rare Earths(Chile, I believe). Afghanistan is another area.
You talk too much and think too little, dood.
Bitching about it isn't going to get the digging done!

Well, drop your pants and start digging.

Purification might be a problem, though.

And if 10 million of those tons lie beneath Chicago? Or at the peak of Mount Rainier? Playing with numbers is so much fun, isn't it?

Every second, the Sun feeds us an amount of our annual global energy needs. Wow! Cool, eh?

We can't store it. We can't cover the oceans with Solar panels because we travel across them, ship and trade across them and, besides, covering them would shade the Life beneath killing out fish.....

Solar panels on Mt. Everest? Across Antarctica?

The amount of energy put out by the Sun every second is enough to fill our energy needs for all time.

Gee. Impress me again, Wu Mao Dang.

You want rare earths, do your own digging after all, it's not as if you aren't accustomed to 5hit shovelling.!

You had a rare earth industry that wasn't sitting under Chicago or on top of Mt Rainier and your surveys have revealed even more. It was lack of competitiveness that closed it down. What's your problem, lazy, hypocritical (rhetorical question) or are you just waiting for China to deliver some shovels and some acid before you can round up the immigrant labour?

You are a poor student. You must pay attention and stop daydreaming while staring out the window and at your crotch.
I earlier said that China's very cheap labor and almost non-existent environmental protections allowed it to kill any global competition. I also stated the the Western US does have rare Earth Metal mines. High labor costs and environmental laws shut down US mines. China is willing to soil itself for a quick buck.
However, China now wants to increase their profit margin and kill their electronics competitors. Under the pretense of being "concerned" about the environment and the health of Chinese workers, they will now drive up prices of Rare Earth Metals.
This is a gamble because they will drive many countries to re-open their long boarded-up mines. Maybe China thinks this will take a decade to happen while, in the interim, they will get ahead of the electronics competition. China is also heading into Space and will need those Rare Earths more than ever.
The bottom line here is that what China says in the world's media and what their actual intentions are show us a CCP built on lies. Nothing Earth shattering there because the world is accustomed to dealing with Chinese liars. Anyone who believes that crap about protecting the environment and worker health deserves what they will get - screwed in the long run.

None - paid or unpaid (I'd need a business visa for that I suspect) unless you include my wife and she spends her time bossing me about since it is a matriarchal society.

Why do other countries operate free trade policies towards China?

We should put an extra import tax on all Chinese products until they start trying to compete fairly in the global markets.

In 2014, China will become the world's largest Importer. You had better figure out how to export to the China market in order to survive. You got less than 2 years.
