I had the great misforturn to visit Gabes on a recent trip to Tunisia.

Now Tunisia generally is a great place with very nice people. Gabes on the other hand is a total dump. Dust covered, litter strewn with a population that does not appear to have ever travelled beyond the next village, judging by the level of blatent racism they portray as part of their normal existence.

If ever you have the misfortune to end up in this utter crap heap, the railway station is the first place to visit (for the next train out)

I just returned to Canada from a holiday in Gabes,Tunisia. It is a wonderful place to visit. It is a mix of old & new culture. The people there were so very friendly to me.The food was terrfic & lots of cafe's for the best cappuccino & espresso. The Sahara Dessert is close by & I recommend you hire a car & driver to take the 40 km drive to see it for yourself...Very Beautiful.I plan on returning to Gabes in the summer.Gabes has taken a piece of my heart.
