What is WRONG with this picture? Hardly "fair trade"! Destroying America!!! Very interesting article. In 2008, Chevrolet exported exactly one vehicle to Japan for every 400 Toyotas exported to the U.S. Throw in the Japanese firm’s production at its U.S. transplants, and the ratio is even more lopsided: Chevrolet sold one vehicle in Japan for every 1,300 Toyotas sold in the U.S. Ford sold about 2,500 vehicles in Korea last year, compared to nearly 330,000 Hyundai and Kia vehicles imported to the U.S And there is at least the prospect of more equal trade with Korea. In 2007, Korea and the U.S. negotiated a free trade agreement that would reduce many of the country’s non-tariff barriers. The agreement, which still needs ratification by Congress, would also start phasing out higher taxes for cars with engine displacements of more than 2.0 liter engines. It also would ban auditing the tax returns of Korean citizens who buy expensive imported vehicles -- a practice that appeared to target importers

The Japanese won't buy American cars because they have self respect for their country unlike some Americans who go to Walmart(China Crap) and Toyota and Honda , Kia lovers etc,etc you get the picture. Hell were outsourcing every thing to other countries

From what i was told by a Siemens instructor In 07 who had dual citizenship here and in Germany, the germans are the same as the Japs, they rarely buy import anything unless it's just not made in Germany.

Selling Chryslers in other countries makes to much sense. Remember this is Chrysler.

The main reason is that most American cars are too big for Tokyo traffic, and too uneconomical for Japanese pump prices. This goes for the Far East in General, not just Japan.

If you "think" this is about loyalty and not quality, you ought to try reading and test-driving. First, the Japanese buy and make quality stuff. US cars are renonwned for being oversized with poor mileage. Even the Fiesta doesn't sell well in Japan. Second, a person living in Japan cannot legally buy a car IF he does NOT own a parking space for it. Yes, that is actually a law. And since most parking spaces a laid out for small cars, people aren't going to buy oversized American cars. Third, US cars can't compete in gas mileage. The Japanese cars that hit the US have catalytic converters put in and get 10-15 miles LESS per gallon than what they sell at home. American builders don't take them out, meaning US cars get crappy mileage. Fourth, the Japanese love the Ford Focus - the one made by Ford Europe, not Ford US, because it's the rally racing version, better made with more horsepower. They also buy the Mustang, the most popular US name, but again produced by Ford Europe. US automakers are the ones shooting themselves in the feet. This has nothing to do with "nationalism" or other nonsense you're "thinking" of.

Probably not, because people are too busy listening to Faux News or reading The National Enquirer. ASEAN is an organization like the European Union that is being proposed in the Far East and Australia. A free-trade zone. Kick-off date around 2015. Japan will supposedly be part of it, which means they will have to change their trade policies with respect to ASEAN. If Ford of GM want to sell more cars in Japan, its easy. When ASEAN is formed, they can bring to Japan Ford Focuses or Chevy Captivas from their factories in Thailand. The big question is whether they can compete on the domestic Japanese market with Toyota......

To an American, "fair trade" means the US can export to your country, but you can't export to the US unless the price is below the cost to make it.
