The FBI issued an alert this week warning that wireless Internet networks, often called Wi-Fi hotspots, are more vulnerable to hackers than most users probably realize.

I've lways thought using these places to "work" was risky. Starbucks was hoping to be the pseudo-"techie" hook up place, like the book stores....if you want a cup of coffee, go get coffee....leave the notebook at home.

Airports on the other hand....people could use the time and place to accomplish something while they wait 2 hours for thier flight......

As someone who used to spend 1/2 of my life in hotels this worried me often. I also wondered about the wired connections in hotels since they all go through the same router.

Wi-Fi hotspots are nothing other than a place to pose, show off your laptop and hopefully make people think that you're important. Information that should be secure should NOT be on a laptop!!!!!!!!!!

It's also a place for those of us who work at home to go to break up the monotony. But I have seen morons with their Bluetooths on, shouting at the tops of their lungs in Panera, trying to look all lofty.

anyone who thinks people who use their lap tops and bluetooths in public are trying to look "lofty" (who uses this word anymore & what does it really mean?) is not in a job position that requires you to be chained to your computer 24-7.

lucky you. but those of us who are truly "all lofty" can tell you that it's not fun, it's work & if you turn that computer or mobile off, you lose your clients. Clients expect answers the minute they ask, and if you don't provide the answers they go to someone who is ready.

We need to eat too (if we can find the time to get our hands off the keyboard). Maybe you enjoy drinking your starbucks nice & slow but for many of us it is simply rocket fuel.

Get off your pedestal butt or one of us lofty workaholics just might kick it out from under you.

Ta'....bluetooth's calling.

RESEARCH ARP ATTACKS...I can steal anyones password at any WIFI HOTSPOT.

A simple rewriting of the ARP tables on the main router will redirect all traffic to my computer. I then sniff the traffic, but also reroute it back to the Internet so the user is unaware. This is a simple hack that goes undetected. Its also not able to be stopped since this is the very design of how the internet works.

"Try Knoppix, it's free. "

Oh please...You cannot stop against the attacks the FBI are warning about. I'm telling you its ARP Attacks. Which means every single device connected to the Internet is vulnerable.

I wont post the program here, but there is a very simple windows program that will automate everything I talked about..If you do your research, you might just be "cain and able" to do it =)

um people who use laptops in public are not all "lofty" you fools. The point of a laptop is for its mobility. Its the 21st Century you old farts. Example: Every one has cell phones. cell phones nowadays have internet and WiFi access. Why does everyone need to be on there phone all the damn time? Ill tell you why, because it is another form of communication with the rest of the world. It is a form of information where ever you are. people who use laptops in public can be "lofty" as you say. To cheat to purchase their own internet service, or away from home be it another city, state, or country. WiFi can be unsafe yes. But technology is the future. We will continue to see it in our everyday lives. Keep up or get left behind!

That's classic. Find another line of work and get out of sales if your "clients" are THAT dependant upon you. What are you anyway, a drug dealer?

You look pretty stupid standing in line talking to yourself. You turn around and got that thing stuck in your ear.

Spare us your self-importance, buddy.

Is that ARP or AARP? Are you my grandmother in Boca? Are you hacking into the pron sites I am visiting? ;)

Seriously, don't do any wireless business unless you are connecting through a VPN. WEP is sh'ite.
