No replaceable battery? A real deal breaker for me. No cut and paste? Shame on you Apple.

old iPhone better now too
|
The new 3G iPhone will cost you more over 2 years and is made of cheap plastic. The GPS in the new phone is pretty useless and while the 3G is fast it is not available in most places, so wifi surfing is your best bet. PLUS, all the new apps (programs) are available on the old iPhone. Thus, it is not so easy a 'call' to say the new iPhone is better.

Not to nitpick, but the phone technically has four buttons: power/sleep/keylock, home, volume, and silence.
@sonybuff: The 3g iphone's battery is not soldered to the board, so you could replace it yourself if you're feeling a little adventurous. Otherwise, it's about $80 for Apple to do it.

All of the features except two are available with the 1st gen iPhone. It doesn't do 3G and has no GPS. All of the other updates are software and are available by upgrading to software version 2.0.
BTW, we have users on our company cell phones with both Verizon and AT&T. Most report better coverage with AT&T.

I would like a wrist watch with eyeglass version of one of these things that takes voice commands, maybe syncs with a bandaid on my finger? I would like to get in a cool car on a hot day, maybe auxillary solar air conditioning? Maybe when I'm 100..g

I love the iPhone 3G capabilities, but the service leaves lot be desired! Far too many dead zones with no service....

I believe the 3G coverage/reception problem is more of an Iphone related issue than a ATT related issue.
just google iphone 3g signal and you'll see the complains coming from all over the world (read: not just att customers) about how they can't get a decent 3g signal on the iphone but other 3g phones get a good signal. I know because I'm one of them that can't - haven't seen anything higher than -91 dbm.
I'm hoping it something apple can fix with a firmware update - but its sad because apple claims to be great at customer support but they haven't even released a statement regarding it yet...

Voice Quality
|
I totally agree with all your comments and I totally love the phone as I did the original. However I find voice quality is worse and if you search the forums will see many people say that too.]
Also, like many others, I am disappointed that my first Gen iPhone worked well with the Car's Blue tooth but 3G/2.0 Update does not.
Hoping Apple issue and update soon as spoils a brilliant phone.

I would jump in a minute to the Iphone. I love it but I need connectivity I cannot afford to drop calls. I will buy as soon as Iphone is available on Verizon and or AT&T coverage is reliable and no longer drops calls.

The biggest new "feature" of this phone is that it no longer works with many ipod docking stations, specifically - those that use firewire for charging. The previous IPhone worked great for this. Personally, I am going to try and switch back. Fast internet is great but when choosing between faster internet and being able to listen to music without running the battery out it's a no brainer!

Thanks for the good review Mike. I am in South Africa and have been using my first gen iPhone with GREAT enjoyment on our Vodafone (called Vodacom here) network. I have not had a moments of problems with voicecalls although establishing a connection can sometimes require 4-5 redails (must be the fact that the iPhone has not "legally" been tested on the network).
I obviously use a jailbreaked iPhone and have had access to most of the apps in the iTunes store (mostly for free) though the installer. BUT making a buck out of everyone is Apple's (and the USs') motto!
