NASA To Bomb The Moon On Friday Searching For Water

Full story: www.nbcsandiego.com

NASA's going for full impact Friday, firing a bomb-laden missile at the moon in a dramatic search for water. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is sending its Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) on a mission to fire a missile into the south pole of the moon that is twice the speed of a bullet. The guided rocket will crash into the moon's surface creating a blast powerful enough to a huge plume of dust and debris. The spacecraft following closely behind will then take pictures and analyze the debris kicked up after the impact. If you've got a 10-to-12-inch diameter telescope you'll be able to see the debris cloud created by the missile's impact. NASA predicts the impact will visible at 7:30 a.m. EDT on Friday morning.

I'm looking for the African American angle here. Did a black person develop the space program? A component of it? Missile designs? Who am I kidding, you're all too busy waiting for your link cards and crying about how Whites and Asians make math and science so hard to hold you back.

I have always wondered, how with the ever great technological adavnces that we have at our disposal, how come we cant fly to the moon

How come we could travel to the moon in a rocket that was less advance than a modern mobile phone 40yrs ago, but today we can not, surley creating a rocket that can travel to the moon is not that expensive, in relative terms to 40yrs ago

Rah, it is very simple, money. To merely put a human footprint on Mars will cost between 229-billion to 1-trillion dollars!

I am pretty sure a ROCKET will be used to get the satalite to the moon. And why use humans to fire a missle at the moon anyway?

I dont get it, we spend so much money on putting a flag and a footprint on the moon, and whilst we was there there was no sign of water, 40 yrs later when we have bettre technology, we are throwing bombs at the moon to find water

yet it would be way less in cost than the original moon landing

I am 35 yrs , born after the moon landings, but I remember when sony walkmans first came out in the 80s, I remeber wanting one but I always remeber the cost, they were like $800 dollars, now in 2009 them same sony walkman wouuld cost us about $20 the most

that is major differnce in cost

should not we by flying to the moon on a regular, why the regression in lunar landings

that alone makes me have doubts, to if we ever did travel to the moon

Bro I cant even Image what a trillion meant in 1969, but I kno it should be a lot cheaper in 2009

First thing I dont agree with firing missles at our moon, that is not something I would ever think of doing, the actuall idea to throw missles at our moon is insane

rather than Man attempting to create more destruction, for his ever seeking quest for imortality on our moon in his attemp to find water

He should concentrate on what water we have on Earth and how to look after Earth, not rape it and now seek to rape the moon

Let's introduce George Carruthers....

"Upon joining the NRL, Carruthers focused his attention on far ultraviolet astronomy, observing the Earth's upper atmosphere and other astronomical phenomena. In 1966, he became a research assistant at the NRL's E.O. Hulburt Center for Space Research where he began research on ways to create visual images as a means for understanding the physical elements of deep space...."

"Carruthers received a patent for his invention the "Image Converter for Detecting Electromagnetic Radiation Especially in Short Wave Lengths" which detected electromagnetic radiation in short wave lengths...."

As usual you quote from the same grossly historically inaccurate website. Traffic signals were invented over 30 years before Garret Morgan "invented" them. Peanut Butter was invented by Aztecs thousands of years before Carver "invented" it. On and on blacks do something tiny that greater men have done before, then take credit for it.

Passive resistance, Henry Thoreau.... Oh but don't let the fact that MLK Jr. and Gandhi both read his book and were inspired by it, stop you from claiming MLK Jr. did it first...... When you quot from BS websites positing easily debunked myths as fact, you have no credibility.

"Experts on space-related projects, Dr. George Carruthers and Dr. Robert E. Shurney have both put their mark on the nation's space program. Following the "Moon Buggy's" dusty ride on Apollo's inaugural trip to the moon in 1969, Dr. Shurney came up with a better idea by designing metal chevrons to provide greater traction for its wheels. In 1972, Dr. Carruthers designed an ultraviolet camera/spectograph that was placed aboard Apollo 16 to determine the extent and composition of the earth's upper atmosphere. A major contributor to the area of space astronomy, Dr. Carruthers received NASA's Exceptional Scientific Achievement medal for his work on the ultraviolet camera/spectograph...."

,..don't want to leave out Dr. Robert E. Shurney...

I only replied to this troll to help share knowledge with others, I'm not going back on my oath to leave trolls alone.... This particular troll allowed me to bring up a few famous African Americans in AMERICAN history as they relate to the Space and Missile Defense Programs and I was obliged to set the record straight...

I'm sure this clown will come back and say these men were not Black or something stupid, they always do..anyway, Black people know your history and who has been more in only 45 years than any race...imagine what we could have done if we were not oppressed around the globe for so many years....

Here, check the dates on your little myths and then independently verify the information. Your list of inventions is pathetically short, even shorter when you see how many are feel good lies.....

The funding and motivation for the space race came from the Cold War and was a spin off of intercontinental ballistic missile development, the Yanks wanted a bigger rocket than the Russians. Most space ventures are now ones which either pay (commercial satellites) or for military use (GPS and spy).

The question has the be asked, what is the point of going to the Moon and what can be gained from a permanent presence other than national prestige?
When the Yanks went they found out it is exactly what it looks like, a giant ball of dust and rock. The recent space missions by the Indians and the Chinese are intended to send a message that they have arrived as world powers, the Chinese have already had a man in orbit and are planning a moonshot.

They haven't come up with anything to replace the sheer brute force (and expense) of a rocket for escaping the Earth's gravity, not yet anyway, although there is some talk of various high altitude pulse-jet technologies or even an anti-gravity drive.
I remember in the years after the Moon landings there was talk of various space stations and manned deep space exploration but as the technical and financial realities became apparent all such schemes were queitly dropped.

Let's look at Otis Boykins again, because this man was a gem.,.,.

http://chem.ch.huji.ac.il/history/boykin.html

"Boykin's first patent was given to him on June 16th, 1959. The patent was for the wire precision resistor. Boykin's wire precision resistor is now found in computers, radios, television sets. That invention helped to make all of the products less expensive. His next invention was an electrical resistor, which he patented on February 21st, 1961. Then he continued to make 26 more electronic devices. Among his many other inventions are a burglar proof cash register which helped to bring down the risk of theft in stores and a chemical air filter to prevent toxins from entering the body. He is not well known for these two inventions, both of which he never patented...."

Otis Boykins cont...

"The other one of Boykin's inventions that he is famous for is a circuit that is found in all guided missiles. Known as a polyphem missile, it possesses a range of 60 kilometers. It is able to hit it's targets by taking in pictures through an infra-red camera positioned in the nose of the missile. The images are then transmitted through fibre-optic cables to it's firing post...."

Absolutely brilliant mind.... and all of you can invent something yourselves...
