WASHINGTON: Don't blame us, oil industry chiefs told a skeptical Congress. Top executives of the country's five biggest oil companies said Tuesday they know record fuel prices are hurting people, but they ...

"Don't blame us"! That is a classic line. I will remember that the next time my boss drags me on the carpet. I'll just tell him-"don't blame me". I also liked the comment that "if you try to impose unnecessary tax on the billionaire oil co's, we will spend less on research and the price of gas will go up. Threatening us with higher gas prices if the US CONGRESS tries to do anything to them. Gas goes up because they spend so much on research now, but it could go up if they don't spend more? Try to make sense of any of that gibberish. Hat in hand after 123 billion in profit, there they all were in front of congress asking for another 18 billion in tax relief. All this on april fools day. Nice. No one can say this pelosi driven congress has not done anything about our fledgling economy, they just brought in all five of the largest oil execs to grill them about their business practices and guess what,,, that's right, NOT ONE OF THEM WERE UNDER OATH AND ASKED TO TELL THE TRUTH. Congress just wanted to cover their ass and go through the motions. Another weak attempt to explain why water runs off a ducks back. Keep it up and there will be no middle class left at all. Oh, that was the plan, never mind, everything is just fine.

The problem is the MARKET.....think about it...we could not stand having "third world countries struggling" so we AID them and now when THEIR economies grow and THEY begin to use OUR OIL...we go nuts becasue the price goes up...NOTHING will change until.. the dollar gains some strength, and we start using OUR OWN resources and quit worrying about an owl or polar bear...The US has the resources and the knowledge....WE DON'T have a BRAIN in Washington in the 535 of them that can see this ....all they want to do is CONTROL more and hamstring us with more TAXES.....the American way....taxed to death...

This is reminiscent of the early 70's oil hoaxes. The excuses have changed, but the results are the same.

What goes up must come down? I have not seen gas prices drop in the 25 years I have been driving!!! I should have gone into the oil business instead of plastics.

.... Petition: Tell McCain to return oil PAC money
Since 1989, oil and gas interests have donated $548,712 to McCain's Senate and Presidential campaign accounts and his leadership Political Action Committee (PAC), according to an analysis of campaign finance data provided by the Center for Responsive Politics.

McCain prides himself on his so-called 'straight talk.' In McCain's 2002 memoir, McCain wrote that "money does buy access in Washington...at the expense of the many." (Washington Post, December 31, 2007)

Yet in 2006, McCain voted for over $5 billion in tax breaks for Oil and Gas companies.[H.R. 4297, Vote #118, 5/11/2006]

It's time to ask John McCain to give us some straight talk: is he with big oil PACs or American families?....

$120 billion in profits at the expense of the common US citizen who is losing their homes and slowly going bankrupt, and the oil companies are not at fault? They are the biggest pigs at the trough and Bush_A$$ lead them there because he refuses to do antything to stop the out of control price increases in oil because it would hurt his Big Oil friends except say we need to ruin the Alaska wildlife refuge with more oil drilling. Tax the hell out of them oil companies.

Big oil companies are only partly to blame. The American consumer's "need" to drive alone in a truck (SUV) to work and a housewife that needed the SUV over the minivan or small wagon is also to blame, its called a demand pull on prices. Add to that the industrialization and mobilization (in automobiles) of China and India competing for fuel and a war that disrupted the oil flow. Detroit's short sightedness hasn't helped either. When Detroit decided to bet the bank on the high profit SUV and push them on consumers instead of being innovative in its products, it also increased demand for fuel (but karma has already bitten them for that maneuver). Oh and let's throw in Middle East countries, natural disasters and an administration that says it supports the free market but gives giant tax breaks to big oil yet refuses to regulate them.

Do you have a pension/401k?
PRAY oil makes money--because you own the 'evil' oil companies.
Why doesn't Congress go after farmers who get tax breaks and are making BILLIONS on corn??
Contrary to what the media tells you, the oil bosses don't sit around like Monty Burns and count their money.

The oil executives aren't at fault. They do not control the price of crude oil, which has more than tripled in price during the Bush administration. The oil companies are making more money simply because they are processing more oil, as demand keeps increasing.

Hmm We need to make money during the up times? Well I guess 120 BIL should cover quite a down turn.

When asked why Exxon will not participate in alternative fuel research.. We gave a $100 mil for research on global warming.. wow big of you out of a $40 bil profit and the other smaller oil companies invested $3.5 bil..unbelievable!

Answer.. let them drill in the gulf if thats the excuse.. give them the $18 bil they are requesting based on a percentage of profits being invested in ACTUAL alternative fuel research!! Compromise people and get something friggin done!!

Greedy sons of b*tches ! Time to get the Texas oil men out of the White House, reverse the tax cuts and start regulating the oil companies once again. They are taking advantage of us, and they are devastating our economy with their greed. We need to start seeing these things for what they really are - treason against the American people.
