Do the math:$5,000,000 to 500 homes is $10,000 per home. How long would it take to see that in energy savings???

They need a safer energy source other than the radiation from the Trinity Site, and uranium mining spooge in the groundwater - would be nice to hook a panel up to the swampcooler... 8 Northern Pueblos

When I costed out a DIY solar system for my house, it was about $30,000. I would never recoup that cost.

Interesting enough and at least it's on the Earthgig. Funny that this proposal comes so soon after the recent solar panel plant production went into full scale operations.

Let's go Cannabis. Cannabis is Solar Power at its best. A crop takes three mos to grow.I'ts a nitrogen fixer which means great health for the soil and future nutrition for other crops grown in rotation.

REAP HEMP.

Industrial Grade Hemp, can not get you high. We can use the methanol derived from combusted hemp fiber to fuel our cars, generate clean electricity and help remove our need for oil over night.

What a bunch of callous buzzards. They haven't solved the chronic flooding problems in places like Martineztown and Barelas, or the bad water problems in the south valley and they are proposing solar powered stuff and spaceports costing many more millions. Typical Mayor Marty Mad Mood Chavez and Guardian Council stuff. They try to make money for their cronies at every chance they get- got to keep those kickbacks coming!

Was this a grid tied system or a battery backed off grid system? Did this take into account the 30% Federal tax credit? If not that 30K system would cost 21K. On www.dsireusa.org are there solar incentives for installing solar PV or solar hot water systems? Have you checked out EEM loans? It's your tax money too, if you don't claim it, it will go to someone else or be used for something else. As for paying for itself, take a look at getting a new car or how about a new bass boat. Look at the gas, maintenance, insurance, repairs of owning the vehicle, boat. By the time you get it paid off, it has cost you another 10K or more. Solar, you buy it once and it makes power for you for the rest of the systems life, which could be 30 to 50 years.

How many people live in a home for 30-50 years? Asume they do... at $60/mo electric bill X 30 yrs =$21,600
I just payed off that DIY you suggested.

"If not that 30K system would cost 21K."

Come on its a good idea but they need to make it affordable for everyone to make the switch, thats all.

If more people installed solar panels, then you wouldn't have to stay in your home 30 years to benefit. Even if you moved, you'd move to a new home that also had the panels, thus the cost of the panels could be built into the price of the home and the energy savings that it came with.

Sure you would. In 10 years,$30,000 won't buy a loaf of bread.

The Germans have the best system. They make low interest loans for the equipment and require the utilities to buy back the extra power at lower than retail rates for a certain number of years. There is almost no net cost to the homeowner who ends up with free power until the cells wear out. Pretty slick for a country where the sun almost never shines.

O.K. so you put 30K into a room addition or an in ground pool. Do you take those with you when you leave? Affordable for everyone? How many people go to Starbucks, two to three times a day, pay around five bucks for a 'sapachino'. If they do this enough, they could be costing themselves 2K to 3K a year. Where's the payoff on that? This tells me that folks that say it needs to be 'made' affordable for everyone has not put their own spending under a microscope and found the money. Listen to yourself, what you're telling yourself and every one else, is that 10 years with a new car is better than ten years with solar PV or hot water. Up front say you spend that 21K for the car, you get to also pay for insurance, taxes, gas, maintenance, repairs for those 10 years. The car looses almost all of its value over those 10 years and doesn't provide one decrease in living costs. The solar over 10 years gives you something back every day, even cloudy ones.

That would be about as green as it get, but don't think much would get done 'cuz everyone has the munchies - hence Cheech & Chong couldn't get those 2 movie projects together, "Lord of the Smoke & Grumpy Old Stoners"...

By all means, enlighten us all and show where Solar PV or solar hot water doesn't make sense. After Cap and Trade then will solar make sense?

Don't do it. I had solar panels on my house. I absolutely hated it. It looks disgusting and it doesn't work when it's suppose to. In the very cold months, there's not enough sun to power it. To many clouds and the sun is not warm enough. It's a reap off, and you'll never get your monies worth. I would never allow anyone to put those things on my house again, even if it were free. But, the sales pitch sound real good. Watch out.

Couldn't be because YOU picked the wrong system now could it? If solar PV doesn't work well solar hot water might do better and payoff sooner. By the way the car or truck you drive will never 'pay' off, it will continue to be a financial drain from day one to its final resting place. But you don't complain about that do you? Your poor results are from your poor study skills, your whole life will be full of these types of disappointments.
