I realize that this family is going through a hard time. When a child goes missing there are several factors that contribute to any given case. However, I must ask, why was the child walking from her friends home, at the age of 9, alone? We know that in today’s society there a lot of people who will perform criminal acts for their own gain (child abductors or abusers do it for their desires). Child abductions have increased, and therefore we all need to be a little more vigilant when it comes to our children, the younger and smaller ones need us the most. Maybe someone in the home who is older should have walked to her friend’s home, and walked back home with her.; if they had done so, they would know where she is and that she is safe. I will pray for the little girl’s safe return to home. We all need to be watching out for the children that are around and in our lives. KCV

Wow, you basically said what I wanted to say. I feel the exact same way. A nine year old SHOULD be able to walk free and not be harmed BUT that isn't how our world is. Parents, if you love your kids, which I know you do, then do the most you can for them. If you are home and are able to go get your child, then do it. Nothing should be more important than them. I have read a lot of blogs that people claim that parents can't walk their kids everywhere, that they are old enough, etc. But, reality is what it is and once your child is taken, you most likely don't have another chance. Predators have always been lurking and always will. Yes we need to be stricter with them, but until there is a way to know that someone is a danger, then protecting your kids comes first. KVC, at this girl's age she should be okay alone for a while, but it was probably almost on the verge of getting dark, she had to walk home alone, so for me, if that girl were at my house, I would feel somewhat responsible and I would accompany her home. But that is just me.

Why do parents continue to let these children wonder around alone?? I mean come on... 9 years old walking a quarter mile ALONE?!? Do people not watch the news or what. This happens continuously, and could be prevented in most cases if parents would take more caution.

I hope the parents do not take offense to the ones who are already blaming them for letting a 9 yr old walk alone. I realize that the parents probably live in a quiet, small area where everyone knows everyone and the felt safe since it was such a short distance and it just felf understood that "nothing bad ever happens there." Anyone can be guilty of that. I wouldn't let mine either in this day and time, but let them at least find the child before you start in making the parents even more devastated than what they already are, THEN, voice your opinion. It is kinda cruel.I pray she returns home safe and soon.

Susie... you are wrong.. I live in Jefferson City, and I have young children. I would not allow my 7 year old daughter out in our own back yard (in the area this little girl is missing from OR here in Central JC) Its just getting to crazy in the world. Elizabeth Olten was last seen walking down highway D and if u look at a map or have traveled this road on any occasion you will know its no place for a child to be walking.. Its curvy and people speed down it often. Its hardly a place for a grown woman or man to be walking. I do pray for her to be returned home safely.

For all of you who want to criticize this child's mother, shame on you. This is someone's BABY! This is someone's SISTER! I know this family, and realize that the distance is being reported as 1/4 of a mile, but I hate to break it to you people who want to bash her mother, that's not quite an accurate distance. The mother hadn't even been told that the child had been sent home from the friend's house, so she couldn't have gone to pick her up even if she had wanted to! Maybe instead of criticizing the mother, you could find something more productive to do, like say a prayer for the safe return of the child! How dare you? Think what you want, but have some heart for this family & keep it to yourself! Freedom of speech only shows what negative people some of you are!

I don't live far from where Elizabeth lives. It is a quiet community; however, less than 2 miles away is a not so quiet community; a community full of drug dealers and bad people. I can understand not wanting to lay a guilt trip on the parents over this, and that is not my intention. But I do give a friendly warning to ALL parents - we no longer live in a world where there are "safe" neighborhoods. Bad people come to those "safe" neighborhoods and take our children. Please, please, do not let your children walk a block by themselves. If you can't drive them or pick them up, make arrangements for someone you trust to do so. We can help prevent these scum bags from taking our children and hurting our families.

I was just sitting here thinking.. Her last name seemed kind of familuar to me and I couldnt put my finger on it.. then I searched for Olten In Jefferson City Missouri and came across some news. Dale "Olten" is a suspect in another Missing case. The missing woman's name is Jasmine Haslag and has been missing for over 2 years now. Dale Olten and Dale Olten Jr, A father and son from Russellville were indicted by a federal grand juryseparate cases for illegally possessing firearms and for possessing stolen firearms. I feel for this little girl more and more.. I just hope the cops can link this stuff and find her before its too late

momof4, Yes, Elizabeth's father isn't in her life, so her mom's dealing with this as a single parent, with the support of friends & family. It's just a sad situation, and thank you for being kind enough not to hold what someone else has done against the mother by blaming her as some others have done... I'm praying for a phone call soon telling me they've found her & that she's okay.

What is going on? Today we learn of the discovery of the 7 year old in a Georgia dump and now this. What kind of sick society do we live in? Is the internet porn industry responsible for the depths of depravity emerging? Is it a lack of Faith. What the heck is going on?

momof4injcmo-I wasn't aware of that. I wouldn't raised 2 and I wouldn't have done that either. I was saying, don't start bashing her mother at least until they find her child safe and sound. She has enough tragedy to deal with right now. The friends should have at least notified parent that child just left, I know, but it didn't happen, so like the others say, wait until she is found.

whats going on in this country dam its not safe anymore for your kids to be alone.you all need to pay attention and stop letting your kids outside alone.there is way to many sick people in the world who pray on little girls.maybe we should stop shooting rockets into the moon looking for water and build a large prison to house all the sick child molesters.since our prison system seems to feel that once they sreved their time they will be good to live in freedom.all you parents out there should read your national sex offender list in your area to see how may are around you.
