I know for a fact thet SWMC is not testing anyone for the flu when they go to the ER, what is this town coming to , are we going to wait until some people die or one of our young children die because it takes up too much time to be tested in our ER

the test has a very high rate of false negative results..........If you think you have the flu they say stay home and out of the ER

I do not have a medical license, but I'm not the one this forum claiming that the H1N1 is a hoax perpetrated by the pharmaceutical industry.

This is the quote you started with.("but most afflicted with the virus are experiencing minor flu-like symptoms. ") But this is the entire quote from the article (BENNINGTON -- State officials said the incidences of swine flu in Vermont continue to rise, but most afflicted with the virus are experiencing minor flu-like symptoms.) You see you left out the first part of the quote, the part that says they are talking about H1N1 cases in Vermont and only Vermont.

And could it be that your Doctor friend has not taken it because he/she is not of the high risk group.(State Health Commissioner Dr. Wendy Davis called the swine flu virus "a young person's disease," because it continues to impact younger people in greater numbers. Health officials believe younger people are more susceptible to the virus because they haven't lived long enough to have exposure to similar viruses)

So if you're going to try and mislead people I suggest you get better at it.

I suggest that before you critique, you read and understand...

First, you changed the reasons my friend gave me for not taking the vaccine, do you know him too? Funny he told me about the lack of testing...
why are you misleading everyone this way?

what does the fact that the article speaks about Vermont "and only vermont" have to do with the fact that the h1n1 flu...is basically having flu like symptoms...not much to worry about for MOST...what difference does your point make to mine? what does the language you added to my cite add to the discussion?

if MOST folks get a mild flu...why all this hysteria?

lastly, how is asking questions milseading?

Scott05201, while I'm sure Estanson can defend him/herself perfectly fine, I don't believe they said or even implied that "H1N1 is a hoax perpetrated by the pharmaceutical industry". Those were your words, not theirs.

While I don't want to contribute to the insults flying around here, it is blatantly obvious that most people on these boards don't have their medical license (myself included). I've seen so many posts where I doubt the posters could even spell "medical license". If that is the future of communication in our country, heck the world in general, I'm going to start looking into life on other planets.

Sorry, apparently my computer is quite slow. Estanson already replied :)

I know a few people who have had H1N1. It is not worthy of the paranoia so many people have about it for otherwise healthy individuals. Personally, I don't want to hear any more about H1N1 unless it mutates so drastically that people actually start turning into swine.

And what might I ask are the ages of the people who know who have had the H1N1?

OK Scott, I'm in the mood for a mature, no insult slinging debate that it seems we are both capable of so let's go.
Of course, the pharm. industry is going to play on people's fears/worries/insecurities to get them to use their product - that's basic business. Yes, I believe (or would like to be enough of an optimist to believe) that people in the pharm. industry are in it to develop new medicines, save lives, etc. but it is a BUSINESS...and any business needs to make money to survive...and the pharm. industry sure makes lots of $$.

Ages of the people I know who have had confirmed cases of H1N1 - 10 and 8
Unconfirmed - 14, 50+
I should add that not all of them live in VT.

Oh, and would I get the H1N1 vaccine? No. Would I allow my children to get the vaccine? No. Would I encourage anyone else to get the vaccine? No.
Do I get my children vaccinated for life threatening diseases/serious illnesses? You bet your bippy I do.

But...to each their own.

I will agree with you that the pharmaceutical industry plays on peoples fears/worries and insecurities to get people to use there products. But I do accept that it is just basic business practice, in my eyes that is a immoral business practice. I also understand that it is the main goal of any business to turn a profit. I think the way they can stop the industry from playing on peoples fears is to do what they did with the tobacco industry, take the commercials off the TV. These drugs should only be marketed to the doctors, not the general public. Put the decision of what drug to prescribe back in the hands of the doctors. All those commercials and all those prints adds is how they play on peoples fears.

The ER in Bennington is not testing as Concerned Person stated. However, if concerned person was so concerned about that she/he would have researched and realized that there is no ER in Vermont(or around the country) that is testing unless someone is hospitalized, critically ill, or a resident of a care home/nursing home. The ER isn't waiting for people die. Honestly, who cares if you test positive for H1N1. There is nothing to be done about it. Stay home, drink water, and stop worrying about whether you were tested or not. It is the samething with strep. Do you worry about whether people are going to die or not because they weren't tested for it? No, you take the antibiotics(because it is bacterial not viral) go home and sleep.

H1N1 isn't anymore serious than the regular flu. It is just another strain. The media is making people scared. People are running to ER's because they have the flu. Unless you are critcally ill, short of breathe, or have chest pain then you don't need to be in an ER. THey are going to tell you to go home and rest.

I have an infant daughter and of course I am worried about the flu because it causes high fevers and lethargy in children. They can develop pneumonia. But I'm not letting the media scare me. Children are dying that is true. But these children are developing more serious complications. Or for example they have pneumonia and then get influenza at the sametime. Most people/children that have influenza will not die and do not require treatment.

The CDC website has some very useful information for parents or anybody who would like to learn more about the H1N1 virus. It also talks about antivirals(tamiflu) which personally I would refuse until I could no longer refuse. THe side effects are brutal and it doesn't do anything to relieve symptoms.

Visit the website. Relax. Wash your hands. Take your vitamin. Stay hydrated.

who are you NBGS and where did you come from?
(its rhetorical...)

but this is one of the better threads I've seen round here...
an actual discusssion...
thanks.

As an aside, while i took a shot (no pun intended) at the pharm industry, I really blame the crisis driven media coupled with people who do what they are told...

I do however love conspiracy theories and can easily see how O can be perceived as being backed and supported by pharm in the same way W was the face of big oil....they both had closed door negotiations with unreported results...46 million more customers...

Well some people are worried about the H1N1 virus. For instance, I'm pregnant and have asthma. I also have a 4 y/o with asthma. My husband and I work in schools and kids attend daycare/preschools. I don't recover well from a cold and am on inhalers for this pregnancy. I know it isn't your duty to protect people like me and children who have compromised immune systems. BUT the spread of this illness will lesson if more people get vaccinated.

As far as a gov conspiracy goes- have some faith; you'll live a happier and healthier life.
