I live near downtown Dallas, and I say hooray for the "sweeps" of the homeless and getting them out of the library. They have repeatedly sat up camps on vacant lots next to my house and covered them knee-deep in garbage that blows everywhere while dropping their 40-ounce bottles in my yard. Go to the library and you can't get near a computer because they're hogging them all, drooling over gyno-cam porn in full view of children. If you want to be treated with respect, try showing a little bit to the other people around you.

People should be able to live anywhere in TX without their neighbors living like animals. If people can't manage their lives like good citizens they should be put in prison. It's all about responsibility not about pity the slobs!

It is true. Dallas is the meanest city towards the homeless. What if it were you? What if you lost everything and couldn't get a job? What if you had a low IQ or mental disorder and the state quit taking care of you? Where would you go? What if you had no place to go and didn't know how to even read and no one would teach you? What if you got hooked on alcohol or drugs and couldn't stop and treatment programs quit taking you. What if you went to jail, got out and could never get a job. All of those people live on the streets. You all seem to think that everyone knows how to make it in this world and if they don't they should die or go to jail. Where is the compassion? What, kick them out of everywhere and they will go. The problem is that they have NOWHERE to go and the city of Dallas is run by EVIL people who care more about money than humanity.

Be careful of how you treat others, for one day you might find yourself needing someone to show you mercy. What-so-ever a person sows, that shall they also reap. REPENT!

We have laws on the books that deal with vagrants. So why are so many laws selectively enforced? I think the answer is "political correctness". When I grew up in the 50's vagrants were called "bums" or "hobo's". In those days they were rounded up an put into jails for violating the laws with their behaviors. After a few violations, they either "shaped up", got jobs and became responsible citizens or they ended up state mental institutions. They were not continually "supported" by the "politically correct" politians and their sympathizers who pander to all of the lunatic fringe groups (and their supporters) within our society in their unending efforts at self-empowerment. And by the way, what happened to all of those state mental hospitals? Well most all are closed down now because the bleeding heart liberals of our society didn't like the conditions of the standard of living within them. So now the residents are in your vacant lot next door. Think it the next time your invited to VOTE!

Jim wrote: We have laws on the books that deal with vagrants.
Actually, most, if not all, vagrancy laws in Texas were struck down about 30 years ago or more.
So why are so many laws selectively enforced? They are not enforced at all, see above. I think the answer is "political correctness".
No, the problem grew out of the fact that a "vagrant" in the sense of those old laws was described as someone "with no visible means of support." That proved to be a lousy definition. I make a modest but respectable living at 30,000 per year. On my day off I might walk to my local convenience store in old jeans and a T-shirt (especially during yard work weather) with just a buck or two for a soda. I am walking and might look shabby. I have no ID and all of $1.00 on me. By those old laws, I would be a vagrant.[QUOTE}When I grew up in the 50's vagrants were called "bums" or "hobo's". In those days they were rounded up an put into jails for violating the laws with their behaviors. Absolutely. After all, if I behave in a manner you disapprove of, I should be jailed. Can I also get this power to toss people in jail just because I dislike they way they act? As one comedian once said, "You don't have the right NOT to be annoyed." Lots of people behave in ways I seriously dislike. Do what I do. Deal with it. After a few violations, they either "shaped up", got jobs and became responsible citizens or they ended up state mental institutions. Yeah, well our state mental institutions have frequently been caught dumping those they can not care for back onto the street of our major cities. We don't want to fund these hospitals, but we want them to take care of what we don't want to deal with. Hey do one or the other, but it's gonna cost some bucks to either house them in institutions or pay for the cops to deal with them on the streets. Oh, and it was the conservatives who voted down funding for state mental institutions, not the the liberals.[QUOTE}They were not continually "supported" by the "politically correct" politians and their sympathizers who pander to all of the lunatic fringe groups (and their supporters) within our society in their unending efforts at self-empowerment.
Again, put them in institutions and you WILL support them with your taxes... except we don't do so much of that since we cut funding to "liberal" causes like dealing with the mentally ill. It ain't PC, it's dollars.[QUOTE}And by the way, what happened to all of those state mental hospitals? Well most all are closed down now because the bleeding heart liberals of our society didn't like the conditions of the standard of living within them.
Sorry, friend, look at WHO voted against funding them. The bleeding hearts love caring for the idigent and mentally ill. The Republicans and conservative Democrats were the ones who had to trim the fat and end funding to those institutions. So now the residents are in your vacant lot next door. Think it the next time your invited to VOTE! On this we agree.

Here's a question for the bleeding hearts:
How would you like these people living next door to YOUR house? And if it upsets you so much that people are complaining about the homeless, why don't YOU invite them into YOUR house and get them away from mine?
I came upon a very long line of abortion protesters a couple of years ago, chanting and singing and generally blocking traffic in and out of a Richardson shopping center. The photos were very graphic but certainly doctored and quite disgusting. I took the time to stop and speak with a few of these people. Not being pro-abortion myself, but nor would I necessarily like to see abortions outlawed, I asked a number of these people how many babies THEY had adopted. Most refused to answer; none answered that they had adopted an unwanted child.
Same with the homeless situation. How many of you have taken a homeless person into YOUR home? How many have taken a homeless person to dinner?
I rest my case....

However, I do agree with what one of you said - city officials in Dallas are only concerned with what money goes into their own pockets. Homeless people are in that situation for various reasons. Most of them stay there because they are just too lazy to get up off their duff and try to do something about it. They would rather stand on the corner and beg for money from the public than try to get a job. They don't try to clean themselves up at all. Now I do realize that there are not a lot of places to go to take a shower, but as mentioned before there ARE shelters that allow you to do this. Most of them make their choices, therefore have to live with them.

I've been there and it really does reek of feekle matter so bad that you could... you could almost taste it... which most of them do anyway there so poor just help them and then you wouldnt have them outside of your house.. lol, im sure they can afford to give 10,000 homeless people atleast a shower and a place to get cleaned up.. make them get a job its not that hard to sweep at mcdnonalds

We can only go so far when helping people. There comes a point when they can only help themselves. And the points that the person you are replying to stated shows that how they're behaving isn't how someone who wants to be helped acts.

Jim thanks for putting some reality into this debate. To many liberals want to save the world rather that help it. We can't save these people from themselves we can only help those that want our help. Jim wrote: We have laws on the books that deal with vagrants. So why are so many laws selectively enforced? I don't like that I have to complete all my assignments to participate in sports? I QUIT! i don't like that if i disrupt while the teacher is teaching I have to attend saturday school? I QUIT! i don't like that i have to follow the rules of this school? I QUIT! which is supported by parents and unfortunately rolls over into later life....I DONT LIKE THAT I HAVE TO GET UP AT 5 TO GET TO WORK, I QUIT. I DONT LIKE THAT I HAVE TO SWEEP THE FLOORS AT MACDONALDS, I QUIT...and so on and so forth.. some of these people quit their lives and it wasn't because of me so why should i constantly have to pick them up, dust them off, and send them on their way with a home cooked meal and clean clothes. i HAVE taken them into my home and fed them and given them a place to sleep..they even left with a blanket to keep them warm refusing further help. this was in college when i was working and living off $100 per month. don't tell me i don't have compassion, but when do they become accountable for helping themselves?

Being an educator your grammar is pretty bad but that's not what I really wanted to say. I think homeless people should be forced into prison or the army. That way they help the country or get out of our streets. Watch the crime rates drop as the homeless are removed. Watch the property values rise as the homeless leave. Now gettin rid of the omeless wouldn't solve every problem. Just alot. And I think we need a governor who is more concerned about getting rid of the homeless and getting rid of illegal immigrants. Don't get me wrong I love Bush but I think there are more important matters at hand than Iraq.

You are right to a certain degree. I have lived in the DFW area all my life. I see the homeless all over the place, even venturing out into the suburbs of Dallas and Fort Worth. Yet, most of them do not want to be helped.. 1) Most of them are dunks or druggies 2) The rest are schizophrenic If they want to be helped then they need to take initiative, and not sit on corners begging.
