Doesn't matter.
Is there any kid in Chicago under 21 that has a problem getting alcohol? I didn't.
It only keeps kids out of the bars and that's a good thing.

The legal drinking age has always been 18 here in Australia.

Oh how terrible, that 18 year old would be able to drink alcohol, like they can in the rest of the world! Yes I'm being sarcastic.

So your old enough to vote for the next world leader, but not responsible enough to responsibly consume alcohol.... What a joke!

simple answer really.

if the government deems that you are old and mature enough
to go to some desert hellhole and get your head or other body parts blown off, or watch it happen to your friends and innocent people and children around you... then you are sure as shit old enough to have a fucking drink for christ sake.

what part of that is not painfully obvious to even the most dogmatic, self-righteous asshole?

and if you still dont get it, then you go to iraq, and let some 18 year old kid stay here and be sober. just trade places with those kids you ignorant jerks. that would also be a fair deal.

A while ago I read an interesting point that really made me think, yet I've haven't seen it brought up on this forum: When the drinking age is 18, teenagers coming up on that milestone are still at home and still under their parents' watchful eyes. When the drinking age is 21, they're away at college or living on their own and working, surrounded by peer pressure without parental oversight. As a parent myself, I would rather be directly involved in my children's introduction to alcohol. That's not something I want to entrust to their dorm buddies.
I also agree that seat belts, safer cars, and stronger DUI laws are probably the real reason for fewer alcohol-related driving deaths.
So why not teach them before they become 21? Don't you teach them about sex before they come home pregnant? DOn't you teach them about the dangers of fire before they burn the house down?

I live in Mexico, where the drinking age is 18. Those teenagers that drink are generally responsible about it. I've attended classes at a university here and there isn't the "let's go get drunk" mentality that exists on U.S. campuses. Binge drinking doesn't really exist here, except among U.S. students on spring break. It's a different culture in which teenagers learn about being responsible at a younger age. And honestly, how many of you never drank before you were 21?

Everything should be "legal". Its stupid for the government to be making laws that cannot properly be enforced.

Government should be in the business of EDUCATING people and making them aware of CONSEQUENCES so that everyone can MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICE.

Government should be in the business of EDUCATING people of the CONSEQUENCES, BENEFITS, AND NEGATIVES and let everyone MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICE!

They can't stop drugs, smoking, drinking prostitution etc....Laws don't work, are unenforceable and, since they only apply to certain people, are unconstitutional.

EDUCATION produces much better results.

Let's educate people about murder, rather than arrest them. That should work. All we have to do is educate people and they will act responsibly. Baloney!

Lower the age but keep the driving limits to the age of 21....for instance only allow those 21 and older to "drink and drive" WITH still being within the state law limits.

Based on facts (and college years), the drinking age in Illinois from 1976-1979 was 19 (not 18) and then in 1980 it turned back to 21. Kids used to drive to Wisconsin at 18 since that was legal age there, and a very bad idea for sure (as someone mentioned). Must make it consistent in all states. 18 too young - kids still in High School. Should be 19 at least or I like the other idea mentioned that 20 is NOT a teen any longer. Most college kids are 19 and doing legally would be a far better option than doing it illegally. Driving under the influence should NEVER be an option. Designated drivers, taxi's should be a MUST for ALL ages.

In 1975 when I turned 18 I was taught about alcohol by my parents, not by MADD or anyone else. When I was in college I did drink, but social pressures then did not support getting blasted drunk. So if we as a society wait until people are 21 to allow them to drink, who teaches them then? MADD? I don't think so.

When my 18 year old nephew was preparing to leave for Iraq we had a beer with him, not knowing if we would ever see him alive again. If they want you to die for your country, then we should all have the same rights as adults.
