Share this Email, Facebook, Twitter #PORTSMOUTH — An elusive pressure sensor is to blame or idling the Portsmouth wind turbine, Assistant Town Planner wrote to the town council this week.
#An error message first alerted Lumus, the company that maintains the turbine for Portsmouth, about the problem last week, Mr. Crosby said.
#Lumus sent a crew down to locate a switch to fix the problem, but “as it turns out, there was no ‘switch’ in the circuitry for Lumus to find.” AAER, the now-defunct company that built the turbine,“had installed some sort of third-party instrumentation package manufactured by a German company.” So Lumus was “searching for something that did not exist.”
#The search led from Germany to Canada to Illinois where, good news, a distributor has 40 of them — under lock and key.
#The part will cost from $100 to $200 but the challenge has been getting someone to answer the phone.
#“I have even volunteered to drive to Illinois to get this part,” Mr. Crosby said.
#“My guess is that we are going to encounter this scenario again and again over the life of this wind turbine,” he continued.“The fact that AAER was more of a turbine assembler than a manufacturer with a deep reserve of spares is coming home to roost …(leaving us) casting about the world to find replacement parts. Lumus has been doing an admirable job of making this work”
#I know there is a great deal of rhetoric flying about regarding the wind turbine these days ... Please, please, please, if you have any questions at all about the turbine pick up the phone and call me. I am more than happy to talk to anyone about it and always ready to explain the details.”
#As for a question about the cost of replacing a gearbox, Mr. Crosby said he has been told somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 — including a crane to remove the blades and hub.
June 15th another breakdown !!!!

For the second time in two months, the Portsmouth Wind Turbine Generator has stopped spinning.
"Due to recurring problems with oil pressure monitoring in the gearbox, the wind turbine is currently offline," Assistant Town Planner Gary Crosby said in an e-mail Friday.
"We are awaiting analysis and recommendations from our operations and maintenance contractor and the gearbox manufacturer. The turbine will be back in operation the instant the problem is resolved."
In May, the wind turbine, located at Portsmouth High School, shut down for several weeks after town officials were unable to find a "specialized part" needed for the turbine.
The turbine began spinning again in late May after workers installed a new oil pressure sensor.

The function of socialism is to raise suffering to a higher level. Let's imagine twenty Portsmouth High School wind turbines with a public official in charge of each turbine and a maintenance contract on twenty wind turbines?
Today we are all witnesses to the failure of the first megawatt turbine in Rhode Island right here in Portsmouth. The residents, town and state officials are in a state of denial over the failure of the high school wind turbine.
East Bay Energy Consortium (EBEC) would be a stand-alone entity and would be responsible for its own debts? The EBEC would continue to borrow money through bonds, refinance loans, taxpayer assistance on and on just another state operated kingdom paid for by ultimately the taxpayers.
Here is a quote from, I believe, Jon Boone,“Industrial wind is a bunco scheme of enormous consequence. And people who value intellectual honesty should not quietly be fleeced by such mendacity, even from their government.”
Princeton Municipal Light Department, Massachusetts spent about $7,300,000 for two 1.5-MW Fuhrlander wind turbines. These turbines are a duplicate of the one owned by the Town of Portsmouth Rhode Island.
AAER and Fuhrlander are one in the same for Portsmouth, Rhode Island. AAER Wind Energy had partnered with Fuhrländer to manufacture the Fuhrländer 1.5 MW wind turbine on a license in Canada. The Portsmouth High School wind turbine is a 1.5 MW AAER.
The Portsmouth Wind Turbine has had multiple breakdowns in the past few weeks. One company offered to sell Portsmouth a new gearbox at half price ! It's looking like the Portsmouth wind turbine is going to need a new gearbox sooner rather than later !
"According to Mr. Schoeney, the light department is in debt for $600,000 for repairs to the gear box in one of the town's wind turbine transmission. It remains unclear about who will ultimately be responsible for the bill – the town or the company, Fuhrlander Wind Turbines of Germany. The turbine is expected to be back in service by the end of May and the company will do a diagnosis on the faulty piece of equipment back in Germany. In the meantime, the town has been responsible for seeking supplemental power through groups from other municipal light departments."
Update on Portsmouth Wind Turbine: The problem is maintenance. The maintenance on broken gearboxes and generators is impossible.
The permit allowing the wind turbine to go in didn’t say it could sit there broken forever.
Portsmouth folks welcomed the windmill since it was first approached about them in the early 2000's they are finding that the windmill is no longer working and people want it fixed.
The turbine has been broken down for over a year. The Portsmouth Town Council should declare it's a public nuisance .Take it down or fix it!
