I have to admit. I cannot stand people who ride bikes in the street for transportation. The major problem is that riders "sometimes" follow the traffic laws and lanes, but expect to be treated like a car.

I am driving a 3 ton vehicle 35 mph, around other 2 ton vehicles, but I need pay special attention to someone riding a 30 pound bike 15 mph.

They need to stay out of the street. Ride the sidewalk, it is safer for all.

If this guy was able to afford gas, this would not have happened. Another life taken away by our useless Government.

It's illegal for a bike to be on the sidewalk. They have to be on the street, so unless you want to be charged with vehicular homicide, I suggest you start standing it.

Because people who can afford gas do not get shot. Huh, I never knew! Correlation does not mean causation!

Its not safer for the pedestrians. If you cannot share the road with bikes, perhaps you need to stay off the road.

I have been riding my bike to work off and on for the past twelve years. I rode it to work this morning. I follow the traffic laws. I have front and rear lights and wear a reflectorized vest. The motoring traffic has always been very good to me.

Bicycles are not motor vehicles but they are vehicles and are required to be properly equipped and follow the traffic laws. What gives bicyclists a bad name are those riders who ignore the traffic laws and "ambush" the motoring public by not being adequately visible during times of the day when there is little or no light.

I hope the police are able to find out who did this? Whether a person rides a bike or drives a car, is no excuse for murder. Another sad story.

Just goes to show you how much you know. I ride my bike not 30 lbs but 12 lbs. and I ride it 10mph not 15 and I do have the same rights as a car. I dont have the same rights as a pedetrian so I have to stay off the sidewalks.
What Im doing is the law and my God given right. You have no right to tell me what I should do.

The article implies (unintentionally?) he was shot and killed BECAUSE he was riding a bicycle to work, to save gas. This is just a case of weak editing.

There isn't even anything to correlate here. Possibly the shooter wanted his money and bike?

Not enough info to even speculate.

What's really deadly is how many younger folks think it's alright to ride on 'the wrong side' i.e. facing oncoming traffic. This is dangerous in the extreme. I lost a young friend in '07 for this very reason.

Schools and perhaps law enforcement need to make a point of educating the bike riding public.

I don't think you are getting my point. He is trying to save gas and he is riding his bike to work. Had he been able to afford gas and not riding his bike, he might be alive today. Just one of those scenarios like, "Had I left 5 minutes earlier.....etc. etc."

Whatever the issues were here that caused this, I'll bet you it has to do with the bike being on the road and some rage-a-holic went after him.

Our Government not taking the initiative to get the gas prices under control has more and more people riding their bikes. More and more people are P.O.-ed at the Government and taking that frustration out on other U.S. citizens. We may be at war overseas, but I see Civil conflicts on our own home turf brewing.

It's the law, moron. You obviously need to be retested for you license.

And you are supposed to ALWAYS pay attention when driving.

JAP, you are an unmitigated tool. No response required.

SDespot, you are also missing the point of what's going on. Gas prices have nothing to do with our GOVERNMENT, gas prices are high because we use a SH*TLOAD of gas. It's supply and demand. If everyone in the country decided to eat bananas tomorrow, the price of bananas would skyrocket, too.

This man wasn't bicycling to work because he couldn't afford gas, this man was part of the solution. The only way we reduce fuel prices is to use less fuel.

I can almost envision how this went down...redneck in a giant pickup or SUV (sound familiar, JAP?) gets upset that this guy is taking up 18 inches of HIS road, probably buzzes him with a mirror while passing, calls him a homo for riding a bicycle, words are exchanged, and Billy Ray handles it the only way he knows how. Bullet to the face.

RIP.
