You shouldn't be.

The only way Ohio will ever be able to fix this problem is if it's able to get certain constituencies (organized labor, unskilled and uneducated blue collar elderly) out of the way to provide a better environment for necessary changes to the state's social and business culture. Only then will things improve.

And, if they put up a fight, it won't get fixed.

And the kids will keep leaving.

you make some excellent points, but you forgot that no person under the age of 25 wants to work. they would rather be playing video games or robbing the blue collar elderly.

The only thing the state of Ohio is doing, is running companies and hard working people to other states.

In Ohio? Yes, they are...and the decisions they've been making have gotten the state into the mess it is in.

Georgia isn't like this. Florida isn't like this, although it has problems of its own. Texas sure as hell isn't like this.

Ohio has to find a way to move beyond its stiff culture and environment of class hatred and class envy and blue collar mentality.

If it doesn't do this, it dies.

I don't know if I believe that. They'll study and work hard if they're reasonably sure the system isn't stacked against them.

I know plenty of kids in Plano, Texas who work hard. I used to live near them. I also know plenty of kids in Santa Clarita, California who work hard. The people who lived next door to us were very strict parents and their oldest son had a landscaping business before he finished high school. They were better Christians than my wife and I will ever be.

I don't see as much of that work ethic among the younger set in northern Cal, and I think it's because this place is so affluent. People don't even bat an eye at a million bucks for a home here. It's disgusting.

There will always be economic hotspots, and down areas. It just so happens that over the past 30 years, we've been down sloping since the rubber industry left. There isn't much here outside of a few failing industrial corporations and a few niche markets. Texas, Arizona, parts of the northwest as well are booming in just about every market, so if you really need work, there are places to go, you just might have to leave Ohio to do it though.

And they DO vote. They vote in droves.

That's why there has to be a plan to get around them.

Otherwise, the state is toast.

It may be toast anyway, for this one reason.

Wisely so. I'm tired of the weather here, tired of the job situation, and tired of the neighborhoods turning to pooo-p. Plus I want to move to Texas or Colorado, so the state must be doing their jobs.

No. You're not supposed to be shocked. The AP reports job numbers every month.

The State really needs to become more business friendly. Why setup shop here - the taxes are simply too high.

come to akron where the kids can't move fast enough to keep a job anyways because their pants won't stay up and their baggy shirts would get caught in something, and somehow they have forgotten to speak english. and oh yeah- they can't take their guns to work either unless they're at their second job which is robbing the elderly. btw- they'll never pass a drug test.

Are you really that stupid? Organized labor, isn't that what we had here when the economy was booming due to organized labor (highly skilled and educated, at Firestone,Goodyear,Goodrich,an d the other tire makers in Akron.Unskilled labor, who serves you your food at the fast food joints, doo doo head.As far as the elderly, who greets you at Walmart, and worked all their lifes and paid taxes. You want to get these people out of the way,who the h--- are you,a man with a small brain and a large mouth.

Hey rootvg,I wonder who will wash all the white collar shirts, when there is no blue collar workers left,or elderly people, not their kids, too busy on the cell phone and video games. It takes all kinds of workers for a city to survive, skilled ,unskilled, and people of different ages.Of course,it can do very well without a numb skull such as your self.

Most states are seeing an upward trend in their unemployment.

California posted a 6.9% unemployment rate for June and expects July to be higher. With the bottom falling out of the housing market, many good people can't even turn to the equity in their homes to help get them through this difficult financial crunch. Housing had a downturn in June of over 27%.

So my friends, unfortunately you are not alone. Ohio has problems with their economy and so does California..it's a sign of the times so don't let anyone tell you one state is better over another...sjt

For starters, get a spell checker. You sound like a retard when you post stuff like that.

Akron boomed when legacy industries were (1) protected from foreign competition and (2) protected from states in the south which didn't yet have well developed infrastructure and highly educated and skilled middle class and upper middle class populations.

Did I miss anything?

The rubber jobs aren't coming back. The auto jobs aren't coming back. The unionized, semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs AREN'T COMING BACK.

And THAT is why Akron and Cleveland and NE Ohio have the problems they have.
