Smokers billed for online cigarette sales

“In the last few years, state attorney generals are aggressively requesting the information.”

Smokers across the state may be a little steamed when they get a tax bill for buying cigarettes on the Internet. via MiddletownJournal

Collecting tax from smokers who have cheated their own home state, their friends and neighbors only seems just, and sounds like the way to go.

You have to wonder when laws are changed, just exactly what the goal is as all they do is change guaranteed freedoms in the original documents made upon formation of this country. Tax one product over state lines, they should all be taxed. GET THE ANTI's, which they will.

"Cheated" their home state, friends and beighbors?
Thats absurd.
The only "Cheating" going on is the government once again reaching deeper into their citizens pockets so they can continue their unabated over spending.
Every time they realize they spend too much, its "lets tax the smokers". There is no shortage of Data that proves smoking is an addictive drug, which people cant easily just walk away from when the price climbs, and for the government to keep pillaging more and more from the pockets of their citizens who use this product is immoral.
Exploiting and praying on peoples addictions, when done on the street corner by a local pusher is a crime, yet when done on capitol hill its acceptable "revenue".
Why dont they start raising taxes on Alcohol at the same rates as they do tobacco? Oh thats right, because they themselves like to drink...so why not just burdeon someone else.
I dont want to hera about the health risks of smoking either. If the government really cared about this aspect of the product they would have made it illegal decades ago. As it is, its just a convenient excuse to keep looting their citizens , while trying to tell you its for your own good.

Nicely put! Soon there will be all sorts of posts saying that cigarette smoking is bad for you. WE ALL KNOW THAT. The ANTIs that will be posting that REALLY just don't like the smell. They generally do not have a humantitarian bone in thier collective body with regards to smokers. What they CANNOT do is make decisions on thier own ... they need the government to do that for them.

I bet you just about anything that you just made yourself out to be a hypocrite. Of course we all know you are one anyway. Have you ever bought anything online or mail order? Most (not all) transactions do not include tax. Did you pay the tax or are you only concerned about cigarette smokers who might dodge some tax?

I think Ohio should quit selling cigarettes altogether. Let smokers make their purchases over the internet. Since smoking has become taboo in the State and smokers are considered "second class" citizens, Ohio should wash their hands of the habit all together.
By the way look a little harder if you're a smoker there are other ways to buy cigarettes without paying those pesky taxes and it isn't tough. Since Ohio doesn't want us to smoke, my wife and I have decided not to pay the tax.

Tell us JC, do you go out of your way to find the most expensive gas. Or do you go a town/county over when it's 5cents/gal cheaper.

The Jenkins law eh? me thinks time has come to re-evaluate a law made some SIXTY YEARS ago so our new e-commerce can continue unabated, shame on the government trying to enforce a law made in 1949. I suppose you can't ride a horse on sunday somewhere too but don't remember the last time I read about anybody being made to go to jail because of it. Things have changed, time to change things?

I think the sports stadiums that used smokers money to be built should pay the taxes after all the added cigarette tax did build those nice facilities and smokers aren't even welcome there. Kinda ironic.

I feel that any jurisdiction which puts forth a smoking ban should also ban the sale of tobacco products within it's boundaries. Of course, that would never happen --- REVENUE is at stake. Those same jurisdictions must forfeit any tax revenue from ANY tobacco sales.

To me, if these places really think of smoking as EVIL, then they should consider any income from tobacco sales 'dirty money'. The hypocracy will get in the way, however. It would never happen.

Either way --- I will get my cigarettes.

They now have passed a law that they can go back on any thing bought on the internet.
the constitution says there shall be no tax or bounty between states.Looks as if the constitution is being shredded.
Here is another right that 90% of the people doesn't know that they lost. That is the right to own property.Unless you have an allodial title the government owns your property. You own the house but not the land.Allodial title owners do not pay property taxes or have to have building permits.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allodial_title
same with your car, even if payed off the state is still co-owner of your car. That is why you have to buy a license plate.Very few have an Allodial title to their car which is called the "manufactures statement of origin.
Your rights are being taken away one at a time.

You're actually right. On my desk, I actually have a bill of sale and a CO (Certificate of Origin) for a vehicle that I will soon register. I can own the vehicle -- have that document and it's bill of sale. However, I cannot drive it on the streets until I register it. AND - many jurisdictions have laws prohibiting unregistered vehicles on private property unless that property is occupied by licensed automobile dealers.

We're getting over-run by this nanny crap!
