Jehovah's Witnesses prepare for the end

Full story: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

Thousands of people are expected to attend the last day of a three-day religious convention in downtown Rochester, where the program today will focus on how to survive what organizers believe is the approaching end of the world.

You mean Jehovah's Witnesses are [redicting the end of this system of things??

Say it ain't so!!

They've been doing that since their beginning:

The Watchtower Society prophesied that Armageddon would come at 5 separate and distinct time periods and they were wrong.

1914 - "In view of this strong Bible evidence concerning the Times of the Gentiles, we consider it an established truth that the final end of the kingdoms of this world, and the full establishment of the Kingdom of God, will be accomplished by the end of 1914." (The Time is at Hand, 1902 edition, p. 99) Note: this same statement was contained in the 1908 edition of the same book.

End of WW1:“The present great war in Europe is the beginning of the Armageddon of the Scriptures (Revelation 19:16-20). It will eventuate in the complete overthrow of all the systems of error which have so long oppressed the people of God and deluded the world”.(Pastor Russell's Sermons, 1915, p. 676) In the same year (1915),

1925 -“The period must end in 1925 ...[This date] is definitely fixed in the Scriptures. Every thinking person can see that a great climax is at hand. The scriptures clearly indicate that the climax is the fall of Satan's empire and the full establishment of the Messianic kingdom ... Therefore, it can be confidently said at this time that millions now living will never die”.(Golden Age, January 4, 1922, p. 217)

1975 - Watchtower, October 15, 1969 pages 622 and 623:

"More recently earnest researchers of the Holy Bible have made a recheck of its chronology. According to their calculations the six millenniums of mankind's life on earth would end in the mid-seventies…. Would not, then, the end of six millenniums of mankind's laborious enslavement under Satan the Devil be the fitting time for Jehovah God to usher in a Sabbath millennium for all his human creatures? Yes, indeed! And his King Jesus Christ will be Lord of that Sabbath."

Notice the use of the definite article “the”. It would be “the fitting time”, not “a fitting time” not “an appropriate time” but “THE FITTING TIME”, to the exclusion of all other times.“Yes, Indeed! And his King Jesus Christ will be Lord of that Sabbath”. Not “might be”, not “could be”, but “WILL BE”.
, for sure now….”

End of the 20th Century - Again in 1971, they said it would come in the 20th century:”Shortly, within our twentieth century, the “battle in the day of Jehovah” will begin”. From: The Nations Shall Know That I Am Jehovah - How? 1971 p. 216”

Within the life span of the 1914 genertation: Watchtower, 7/1/69 pg395:

“People who were only just old enough to understand what was happening to the world in 1914 are now approaching seventy years of age. Yes, the numbers of that generation are dwindling fast, but before they all pass away this system must meet its end in the war of Armageddon.”

None of the above happened and now the 1914 thing is wrong.

In each of these cases "we should have a sense of urgency", "it's right around the corner"...bulls**t.

I bought that s**t for 50 years. What do you think loyal Jo Ho's did when they read this:

From “Our Kingdom Ministry”, May 1974, page 3:

“Yes, since the summer of 1973 there have been new peaks in pioneers every month. Now there are 20,394 regular and special pioneers in the United States, an all-time peak. That is 5,190 more than there were in February 1973! A 34-percent increase! Does that not warm our hearts? Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world’s end.—1 John 2:17.”

What, you sold your house. quit you job, sold your stocks, quit college? Hey, who told you to do that?

Jehovah's Witnesses are idiots to stay with an organization that lies.

I was one for 50 years and elder and a pioneer. What a waste.

Just wondering...what have you done with Jesus now that you've left the Watchtower?

Excellent quotes, but i just had to add this one:
"Doctrines that make no predictions are less compelling than those which make correct predictions; they are in turn more successful than doctrines that make false predictions. "

But not always.

One prominent American religion confidently predicted that the world would end in 1914. Well, 1914 has come and gone, and -- while the events of that year were certainly of some importance -- the world does not, at least so far as I can see, seem to have ended.

There are at least three responses that an organized religion can make in the face of such a failed and fundamental prophecy. They could have said, "Oh, did we say `1914'? So sorry, we meant `2014.' A slight error in calculation.

Hope you weren't inconvenienced in any way." But they did not. They could have said, "Well, the world would have ended, except we prayed very hard and interceded with God so He spared the Earth."

But they did not. Instead, they did something much more ingenious. They announced that the world had in fact ended in 1914, and if the rest of us hadn't noticed, that was our lookout.

It is astonishing in the face of such transparent evasions that this religion has any adherents at all. But religions are tough.

Either they make no contentions which are subject to disproof or they quickly redesign doctrine after disproof. The fact that religions can be so shamelessly dishonest, so contemptuous of the intelligence of their adherents, and still flourish does not speak very well for the tough-mindedness of the believers.

But it does indicate, if a demonstration were needed, that near the core of the religious experience is something remarkably resistant to rational inquiry.[Carl Sagan, Broca's Brain,Ballantine Books, New York, 1982, pp. 332-3]

It is more than two thousand years since He said He will be back and many have died believing those words. So it is time we realize that His coming is not about a physical presence, but a blossoming in our hearts of the Christ consciousness, otherwise called the consciousness of the Brahman, Yahweh, Holy Spirit or Allah. It is the same blossoming that we must seek to develop in our hearts, no matter to what religion we belong.

I'm assuming that anyone who has read the Bible knows that this is a wrong teaching...
Oh and Christ will return...he may not do it when you demand it, but he will return.

A reading of the first three gospels (the earliest ones) leave no doubt that Jesus was referring to a physical change in rulership. The kingdom was a real thing, not something ephemeral. And it was coming soon. How soon? Some of his followers would not "taste death" before it happened. A favorite of the WT says that "this generation will not pass away" until the new ruler appears. Jesus was not referring to the 20th century. He was talking about HIS time. It was IMMINENT. And it was physical.

This goes directly in line with Jewish apocalyptic thinking. Apocalptists had been around since the time of Judas Maccabeus. This thinking was carried through into Paul's teaching, hence into Christianity. Paul also thought that the end was imminent. As we know, it certainly wasn't.

Then why did mainstream Christianity develop into the more ephemeral teaching, that the reward is heaven not a physical kingdom? TIME, of course. After many decades of waiting for the risen Christ to make a change to their standing, something had to give. Earlier people who thought the kingdom was imminent were now long dead. The change? They are already in their reward, in heaven. You can see this thought process clearly develop in the later Christian writings, after time had passed.

for your information yes they have been predicting the end og the system of things but it's only because they base their beliefs off the bible not on any personal beliefs like many of the other religions do.They study the bible day and night to make sure that no lie is being delivered to the people that follow the religion. and the only reason they are saying that it is closer then ever before now is because not only have the other predictions come true but now the government is attacking the catholic religion and that was writen PLAIN AS DAY in the bible that the government was going to attack the false religion and that it was going to affect all religion connected to the government. Guess what the only religion without any ties to the government are Jehovah witnesses becaue they already knew this was bound to happen. If you wanna talk smack know the truth behind what your saying and get your facts straight ask questions to people who can give answers not people that will agree with anything you say like complete morons.

The WTBTS just abides by the old circus adage "there is a sucker born every minute"

Look at the JW "suckers" that post here, they ask for not even logic, never mind statistics or studies.

I cannot believe that there are still fools who are scared into believing "Armageddon" is just around the corner, and ONLY those who follow every stupid rule the WTBTS pulls out of their collective butt's will survive.

And all of these people need to die because there not witnesses? The wtbs is an apocaliptic group obssesed with the end of the world. How can you take the presupposition that your religion is correct but EVERYONE else is wrong?Prove it to me using the bible with no publications to 'AID'your thinking.

First of all, your reference at the end of your comment to "people that will agree with anything you say like complete morons" sounds exactly like a meeting with JW's. Have you EVER heard a dissenting opinion proffered at a meeting? Me neither.

They examine for the truth, huh. Study day and night so that no lies are uttered...hmmm.

Let's see...they say that the Book of Daniel was written by Daniel a prophet in the 7th century BCE. It is plainly obvious from the language used (a style of Aramaic), the genre (apocalyptic writing), usage of words (Persian influenced), that the book was written in or around the 2nd century BCE. This is the CONSENSUS among bible scholars.

That's just one lie for you.

So what? The Mormons have been predicting even loger than the Witnesses! They're plenty of Religions that have been predicting the end of things for hundreds of years. Halley's Comet was an era of huge predictions of the world ending! The Witnesses have really only started to become serious since WWI. They actually believe that the generation that ends from 1914 will be the key in predicting the end of humans, but not the end of the physical Earth. They believe the Earth is everlasting according to Genesis, and the term world refers to population.

Hmm, why all the fuss with predicting anything. If your heart is right with God, if you have simply accepted him as your personal savior and live your life according to Gods plan, you dont have to worry about the end. Heaven is the place where you will end up, either if you die or are raptured. Win Win situation.
Besides, in the Bibles that I have read (King James, New International, amongst others) God tells us that he will come like a theif in the night. We will now neither the time or the day. Why dont you stop trying to second guess God and just live. It's much nicer.
Have a great day..

These apocalyptic cults are so pathetic. Instead of working for the betterment of the human race (especially in times of crisis when it's needed most), they latch on to the excuse that the world is ending and it's hopeless anyway. A bunch of cowards all.

Friends and partners aren't behaving as you would like today. They're eager to go their own way, much to your annoyance. In order to get round this you're going to have to ask yourself some tricky questions, such as whether you're trying to control everyone's behavior or whether they're being inconsiderate in wanting to do their own thing. It's a Full Moon and a lunar eclipse, so maybe you should all release the tension by making it a super New Year's Eve celebration?
