New York To Take Up Marriage Equality In Wake Of Maine Vote

Do NOT put it before the people to vote on. Do NOT allow a referendum to define it. Do NOT allow a vote to veto it.

These are basic civil rights. This is about equality. This is about humanity. This is about freedom, and THAT is about the United States!!!

Those who seek to deny any class of people in this country the same rights that they, themselves enjoy are un-American.

I’m in agreement with this marriage equality thing. I think men should have the rights women do when it comes to getting custody of the kids. Why do the women always get them? Everyone knows men are better parents.

I've seen talk in editorials of banning such referenda where basic human rights are concerned -- WASHINGTON, DC has this provision already -- but this needs to be done nationwide, yeah.

What kind of sick country do we live? Know what it reminds me of? IRAQ and IRAN and countries like that. It's just unconscionable.

Just read the article. Yeah, the representatives in New York feel a *DEFINITE, DEFINITE* duty to New York City, where there's a huge gay population.

I've been on New-York-centric boards where this issue is discussed, and they speak their damn minds if anyone does. There is often savage, four-letter-word-laden back-and-forth between the "christians" and the pro-gay people, and they say *EXACTLY* what they think of each other.

I am glad that the article *specifically* mentions that some of them don't give a shit what happened in Maine. The one guy even make Mainers sound like idiots, which is unfortunate but there is no way you can say it's entirely undeserved. Maine f***ed up, basically. That's basically what happened, let's all face it and move on to this next opportunity.

I whole-heartedly agree. The "religious right" (Religious Reich) is nothing more than the Taliban in the United States. Interestingly enough, they are of the same Abrahamic philosophical background.

Referendums are absurd when it comes to civil rights like marriage. In Maine a difference of 3% separated keeping the civil rights of same sex couples intact, v. stripping them of those rights.
There are almost 53,000 queer-identified people in Maine per census data. 3% of the population of Maine is only about 39,000 voters. That means a minority of those who voted stripped away the rights of 53,000 fellow citizens. 39,000 vs. 53,000 citizens. That ain't just wrong, that's seriously f***** up.

I can't marry a member of the same sex either......we are treated equally! Deal with it......

It's funny that they are all jumping up and down......yet there was only 32,023 votes different between the yes and the no position.

I hardly think that is a huge difference.
