Contact your legislators and demand that this bill be passed as planned. Religious cranks want our legislature to approve the intimidate of those who do not toe their line. Bullying must be severely punished regardless of who has become the target. The AC-T is correct. If this bill fails, our elected officials will have allowed themselves to be victims of right wing religious bullies.

It's amazing that some of these so-called christians actively admit that what they do is bullying, and that it should be a part of our schools--but only toward gay children.

Schools already have rules and regs to deal with any kind of physical intimidation.
The problem is not the lack of legal recourse but rather, the application thereof, just like our court system. You can also bet the law would not be administered with any common sense, just as "zero tolerance" has been.

Everyone should be protected against bullying, but not on the basis of sexual perversion. If the "gay rights" supporters of this bill REALLY cared about children, they would demand the removal of the poison pill in the bill. And so the real agenda of the "gay rights" advocates/cranks is exposed.

If the so-called "Christians" really cared about children, as Jesus himself did, they would demand that the bill be passed as is, and include everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, religious persuasion, etc.

This bill is not about the "children". It's about gay rights. Check out who's supporting it. Remove the protection for sexual orientation and it will pass and we'll see who cares about protecting the children. By the way, how on earth did all of us grow up when there weren't laws to protect us from bullying at school!

Bullying has always been a part of "chritian" doctrine. You have to fear a vengeful god, your father, the elders, etc. Fear stems from bullying, that is what it is about, fear, just for being weaker, different, or questioning wrong doing/authority. Bullys don't have answers or "fair and balanced" solutions, only the "rod" or fist! Funny how Repugs are always wanting to "beat your arse", kill someone or wish "darkness, fire and worms" or damnation upon those that don't cowtow to their beliefs or desires! R not only stands for Republican but Repugnant/Reprehensible too!

Only gays "in the closet" are Republican gays or those being bullied by family or others for being gay!

holy nanny, batman...how did we survive our school years, which included bullies even back then, without the protection of the general assembly?

We should have had protection. I can still recall being bullied by jerks who fancied themselves tough guys. I'm not a member of a minority, I have none of the stereotype characteristics of a gay person, I was just an ordinary kid from a blue collar family. Guess I was singled out because I was quiet and a good student. After all of these years, I can remember a few of these bullies and every one of them dropped out long before graduation. Maybe that says something about their need to be seen as tough guys. Any student who in any way attacks fellow students should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. It is interesting to see these people who fancy themselves as Christians wanting to use violence to get their way.

who was going to protect you? Some elected blowhard? Bullies have always been around; they did not get legislated into existence anymore than they can be legislated out.

Best defense against a bully has always been to take him on; you may lose the fight, but you will retain your dignity and punks will think twice about bothering you. Bullies go after those who refuse to fight back because, at heart, they are weak people.

Yes, students who attack others should be punished and those laws have existed without legislative puffery. Usually, it was schools meting out punishment, back when they used to do that sort of thing. Now, we have cops on campuses and, generally speaking, both people in the fight are suspended regardless of who started it.

Yes, both people can be suspended. My son was bullied last year and "took on" the bully - neither of them got suspended, but they did have to go to the principal's office and write an essay about better behavior. A lot of good that did! The school was doing nothing to stop the bullying in the first place.

so, was your son bothered again? Look, I think it's stupid that the aggressor and the other person are both treated alike, but school policy is not based on reason. I just don't see what legislation is going to do. Students are barely touched for assaulting teachers; do we honestly think they'll be punished for bothering other students --

Yes, he was bothered again and nothing was done! I know that legislation can't solve everything but it's a start. I don't really know the answers to these types of problems, but I do know that lawmakers don't need to bow down to these so-called "Christian conservatives."

Jackson County, you are so right. The issue here is not what is or is not done in the schools. The issue is that legislators are caving in to the worst kind of bullies on this planet, the self-righteous so called Christian conservatives.

Back in the 50's when I attended High School, being a person of small stature, and of the "wrong ethnic type", I was attacked on a daily basis by a group of bullies. The school was totally uninterested in this. When my father, who was a holocaust survivor heard of this, took me to his tool box, and removed a crescent wrench, and attached it to a stout piece of cord and put it in me pocket. On that day, when I was punched by the chief bully, the wrench was swung, and he had to see a doctor for some stitches on his head. That not only put an end to the bullying, but it actually resulted in many new friendships.

lawmakers always bow down to loud voices because those voices are presumed to bring votes with them. Doesn't matter if it's Christian conservatives or Asheville liberals. Make your case known; govt is all about the squeaky wheel theory.

And I hope your son keeps battling back; there is no shame in losing a fight, only in not putting up one. Don't know what to tell you about the school folks, but it is hardly surprising.

They are too often scared to act, for fear of offending the aggressors, if you can believe that. Your boy is going to come out of this a strong kid, and if you haven't already become a pain in the school administration's arse, please do so. Amazing what vocal parents can compel the front office to do.
