Hello everyone! My family and I (Me, husband & 2 teen daughters) are currently living in Long Island, NY. I've lived in Long Island all my life and it has just become too expensive, hectic and WAY overcrowded. It's just not what it used to be and not the place I want to live anymore. My family & I feel it's best for a change. I have family living in North Carolina coming from Long Island and LOVE it & I feel North Carolina would be best for us. We have visited and just fell in love with the state. I'm just not too sure WHERE exactly we want to live in North Carolina. We are looking for a somewhat small town feel, peaceful and beautiful, yet close to it all. Somewhere with great public schools. A friendly, welcoming town that is beautiful. My husband works in construction; so there needs to be a job somewhere close. A conveniant location with little traffic. I know this is a lot to ask but anything close to this would be great. Any help anyone could offer would be great. Oh, and a nice sized house in the low 300ks. Thank you for your time.

1 Housing prices are still artificially high, because of a false front of "we're protected from the housing crisis because we're in the mountains". Barter the real estate guys down -- they're hurting just like the rest of the USA. |

It's a Buyers Market here. I have seen houses new and pre-owned reduced by up to $100,000 You can buy a lot of home in the market today for that kind of money. Fairview area just outside Asheville is a nice area.. Good luck searching...... |

1 Don't let Pompous Idiots steer you away. People are very welcoming around here especially if you treat them with the same respect you expect in return |

Amanda -- unless you can afford private school, I would not move down here until you kids finish school. Now if you are one of those rich yankees, then there are plenty of private schools, because the public schools are so bad (48th in the nation).
Also, if you are living because how horrible the people are where you are from, well guess what --- their relatives are already here. What was great about this area 10 years ago, has sense be ruin by the surge of folks from the NorthEast and all the pedophiles from Kalifornia that have moved to this area (weak law enforcement). Oh, and lets not even get into how all the illegal aliens are also destroying the quality of life here in North Carolina. You want some facts, check this out: http://www.schoolmatters.com/ http://davisandhighhouse.homestead.com/ http://www.schooldatadirect.org/ The State and local business are spending several million dollars a year to try to convince other folks to move here, to increase the tax base. NC has the highest TAXES in the South. So do your homework, don't believe the hype put at by the PR flaks at the Chamber of Commerce. |

It's all about attitude and what you want. North Carolina is a great state... I live in the eastern part of NC; I've done a lot of travelling, lived a lot of places, 60 years old, will probably work til 90 because I can and I want to. I'm not in real estate or sales of any kind. I just love North Carolina and you will too. Not everyone here is rude and ignorant. There's plenty for everyone. There is always going to be new construction, not all schools are lacking, most North Carolinians will welcome you. Try from Greensboro to the eastern part of the state. Small town, large town, it doesn't matter; it's all good. It's what YOU make of it.

Just BEWARE that NC has become totally CORRUPTED by 100+ years of democrat RULE, and they have allowed us to be OVERRUN with ILLEGALs, handing out over half a million Drivers License to the invaders...NC crimes by ILLEGALs are frightening, but they have taken steps now and are deporting them as they can, but its still a mess...after leaving NC for 23 years and returning, I was shocked at what this once great state has become, and the complicit voters seem just too dumb to know what's oppressing them... |

Amanda, it's wonderful living in the NC mountains, and if you got a response from everyone around here instead of just the whiney crotchety red-necks, you'd really feel good about the prospect of moving here. Truthfully, many if not most of the people who post on the Citizen Times "Topix" forums don't like anything, and b*tch about the same ol same ol. Good thing is that you can go for days or weeks and not run into any of them in real life. Wide diversity of people, that I find to be a good thing, easy to get to many places - 2.5 hours to Atlanta, 4 hours to the shore, etc. and lots to do. I don't know what those saying there's nothing to do are talking about. Check out some of the local magazines, or look at the Asheville guide online. Alas, there are pockets of ignorance, but hey - they're part of the "diversity" and fortunately in the minority.

actually if you'd get out and drive around the greater asheville area, you'd find out there's a lot of us in the "minority". i'm not ignorant, nor am i a "crotchety redneck". i'm just a native western north carolinian that hates to see what's happening to my home. i get so sick of your yankee arrogance, i could puke. i mean, look around at our mountains....see all those ugly ass houses all over town mountain...drive down old fort mountain, and look back over toward the falls....see that eyesore.... call me what you want...redneck...hillbilly...h ick... but don't ever call me ignorant, because trust me...you ain't gonna outwit this good ol boy. i'll make a fool out of you, just like i've made a fool out of so many dumbass yankees before. i don't hate yankees, some i've ran into are ok. i just hate what they're doing to my home, their arrogance, and annoyin accents. anyways, go on with your head in the sand thinkin i'm in the minority....get out of asheville and drive around a little. i think you'd learn a lot. oh yeah...just because we're nice to your face, don't take that as likin you...we're just mindin our manners, like mama would want us to. |
|
Yeah, well this "dumass yankee" comes from a family that's been in these mountains for over 75 years, and I couldn't agree more with you about the destruction of our environment. But trying to live like you're back in the holler and acting like you're Snuffy Smif really isn't the life around Asheville now. Maybe you wish it were, but it's not. America isn't just pockets of provinciality - the whole country is pretty much transplants from somewhere. Deal with it. |
