I am from Diamondhead, now I live in North AL and I it makes me sick to think about how my home town (and the rest of the coast) is being ignored. I know that the Fed gov't has a lot to deal with but helping out our own should be on the TOP of that list. I grew up there, went the Coast Episcopal Elementary and St. Stanislaus and I can't believe how bad hte coast is being treated. Everyone who is still there has my prayers. If I were not still a student in college I would be there heping out in any way I could. Keep your heads up, you are a Wonderful town and will copme out on top of things..it just may take a while.

A lot of that money went to hotel rooms. A lot of it was spent on campers that are sitting empty in lots. A lot of it was spent on clean up. Even more of it was wasted.

I keep in touch with what's happening in Mississipi via friends and relatives who are still there (and Supertalk MS on the internet), so I know how bad things still are on the coast. But if I didn't have those sources and could rely only on the national media for information, I'd think New Orleans was the only place still suffering the after effects of Katrina. No real surprise there though; Mississippi received minimal coverage at the time of the storm, and almost none since the first week.

I live in WAveland,Ms and yes it is true tht New Orleans gets 99.9% of the media coverage dealing with hurricane katrina. I guess we have gotten use to it and have accepted it. We just hope that the people of the United States realize that Ms. is suffering. In my town of Waveland we were wiped out pretty good. 92% of our tax base is gone. There may have been less than 50 houses with out any kind of damage.(I actually heard around 35 houses) It's hard when you have a house note, trailer note, car note and you you still need to buy a heavy duty truck to pull your trailer. Because when this hurricane season comes we have to pull our trailer so we don't loose it. Even though I do have a trailer note atleast I get to take it with me. I don't know how we'll pull it, I guess we'll figure that out on June 1. Please don't foget us. Waveland and the Mississippi gulf coast still has a lot of work to do. I would like to also thank the volunteers that who have come to help us. If it wouldn't be for ya'll I don't know where we would be. THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!!!

[fema bought a fleet of them]

I think someone lied to you. I think if you check it out there wasn't a fleet of corvetes bought. And so what, he drove a corvette, that's his buisness, are you jealous that he has one. Maybe he saved his money up till he could afford one. Some people are smart with thier money.

As far as Fema or the gov. is concerned, that has been going on for a long long time. Are you just now noticing?

I have to agree with you, New Orleans gets almost all the media attention, and I think it is so wrong for them not to do more coverage on Mississippi. There is no reason you should have to get used to and accept it, you have all suffered greatly, both in New Orleans and Mississippi. Even though you don't get much media coverage,I want you to know, you are not forgotten. There are many people that realize how much damage Mississippi received. I rely on the internet anymore to keep me updated on what's happening down there. I also read the local newspaper from southern Ms. When I look at all the before and after pictures, and see everything that you have all endured, my heart goes out to you, as it does many others. I have a close personal friend from the Ms coast, and when he contacted me after hurricane Katrina, I could hear the sadness and devistation in his voice. I could hear the helicopters flying over. What I couldn't hear, was the birds chirping anymore, or the trains passing by as I had always heard before when I spoke with him. I can only imagine what you are all going through, and I want to let ya know you are in our hearts and our prayers. More needs to be done for you all, but my friend reassures me..The Mississippi Gulf Coast will come back, bigger and better.

Theo why don't you go grow up and be a man instead of a little cry baby that wants to call names just because someone disagrees with you. I have no respect for people like you, you are worthless. If Fema did buy a fleet of Corvettes then maybe Chevy had more than they could sell on hand and needed a way to get rid of them?

ATTN: Frank @ aol Your real quick to judge, so I figure that you don't live in Miss. Here's some facts for you. There is a verison of the depression being created here. With the increasing costs of fuel, everything is going up. This includes clothing, groceries, and utilities. Housing costs have gone out of sight, never mind materials to make repairs. Now to add fuel to the fire, businesses such as McDonald's and the Casios are buying up existing apartment complexes and evicting the people who live there so that they can bring in workers from out of the country to live there. Now this is just wrong. They want American's money, so they evict American families so they can house their foreign workers. There is something wrong with this picture. Mc Donald's in Gulfport has bought the complex that I live in and is evicting 10 families to do that very thing. FEMA has told some of these same people that they can't help them, even thought this is a direct result of Katrina. And don't say this is because of the law of Supply and Demand, that is just a cop out for very poor behavior on the part of FEMA and McDonald's.

Where can I find more info on this? Has anyone contacted WLOX or the Sun Herald in reference to this? What other businesses are doing this?

Oh and for you Mr. Frank, instead of hiding behind the "AOL" logo, where exactly are you from and who is it that you work for? Sounds to me as if it is FEMA themselves.

I live in Petal, MS. I'm just not stupid enough to just buy all the crap that is put out there by just anybody, and I never said a thing about McDonald's buying out anybody. Doesn't sound like a good thing to me. I don't hide behind anything or anyone. So get your facts straight instead of just throwing out crap. If I'm wrong then saying screw you and all that other crap doesn't accomplish anything. So all of you grow up and learn how to have a conversation instead of a blame fest. Maybe we can get something accomplished. Or are you trying to be like another state that gets all the attention because they do all the crying?

ATTN Ali,
I wrote a hot letter to Sound Off in the Sun Herald and they haven't published it as yet and probably won't because I slammed McDonald's pretty good. No ugly language just promised them some bad PR. We also sent an e-mail to WLOX and haven't heard back from them. Since your in Jackson how about contacting the Clarion Ledger, we sent them an e-mail as well maybe people from two complexes can get their attention. If your really interested in our plans send me an e-mail nance2620@yahoo.com and I will clue you in. Our complex is located on 6th Ave., Gulfport convient to Courthouse RD.

Nancy, I think you got me all wrong. I'm not quick to judge anyone. I know how hard the coast got hit. I've been down there and seen it myself. Affordable housing is an issue that does need to be addressed. But if you think your gonna get affordable housing in a prime area then right or wrong your not gonna get it. I think its wrong that these people are getting evicted to build condos and whatever, at least at this time. But then again its like you said. Supply and Demand. Sorry but its there and I doubt anyone is going to make it go away. These people that are selling out to condo's, what can be said, it's a sad thing, I think maybe they should wait a while longer or be required to give more notice in light of the situation. I did suggest somewhere when someone complained about the high cost of living on the coast that they get in contact with some of these developers and investment firms and put a plan to them to see if anyone would be willing to invest in affordable housing. It might not be in the prime spots, you might have to move to another area of town, but it should be there.

But I think what got everyone trying to come down on me was a certain person was whineing about a FEMA person coming in a corvette, all I can say is whoopie doopie ding dong, so what buy me a corvette and watch me drive it. I don't like seeing people go and pick up there food stamps and welfare checks in Caddy's or Towncars but so what. Its not my buisness. And I'm not crying about it either.

I stated earlier that I live in Petal, MS. I have spent many hours cutting trees with a chain saw helping people out, and yes I buy my own chainsaws and I buy my own gas.

But I'll finish with this note. One of the things that has made me proudest to be from MS is there is not nearly as much crying about what someone is not doing for me as somewhere else. We need help and a lot of people aren't really getting the help they need but I think more people in MS just hunker down and take care of buisness. So please don't judge me as bad, I just would hate to see America think of us what they think of one of our neighbors.

Remember, we live in a hurricane strike area and we should be prepared. Be aware of where you live and the risks associated with it. That's one of the reasons I don't live on the coast. Oh well, long winded enough for now,
Oh come on

Well why don't you people do something to help yourselves? You know, like California, Texas, Nevada, NEW YORK (prime example). Everyone has done everything for you people yet none of y'all want to work so businesses can't reopen for long because of all the government funding that y'all are getting that is making you guys not have to pay mortgages, taxes, etc. unlike the rest of the country.

I haven't the foggest notion what your talking about. The people of MS are helping themselves. You need to get your facts straight instead of just making things up. It not us that's not helping themselves. But you obviously just don't know how much damage was done in MS. We have whole towns just about wiped out. I'm not talking about damaged homes I'm talking about whole nieghborhoods of just slabs that are left. Do we need the help. Yes we do. If you don't think something is going good enough for you come on down. You can pitch in and help. You obviouly don't know what total devestation is. Anybody saying MS isn't helping themselves is either ignorant of the situation or a liar.

Attn, Frank,
Thank you for your response. Everyone in our little complex has made some sort of a contribution to the clean up effort. and at the same time made repairs to our apartments so we could live here. And we are all very angry about what is being done to us. Not once has anyone said thank you to any of us. The blue traps that we had until the roof was repaired was gotten by the tenants. I waited a long time and worked hard so that I could retire here and now I've got to move away because I can no longer afford to live here. But that's OK, What goes around comes around, and one day all these people who are beating up on the little people will pay the price for what they have done. I just hope that they reconize it when it comes.
