Is it time to scrap gas taxes in Michigan?
Michigan's state and local road agencies are dealing with funding problems that could reverse the progress we've made in improving our roadways over the last decade.

how about using income tax to pay for the roads most people working are the ones that drive everyday anyway so then the money you get taken out for city tax will go to fix your cities roads. Instead of having a state wide plan. It could go by city and some places can charge more or less depending on road variable conditions

I don't believe that would help the price of gas, because the oil companies/gas stations know what we've been paying and they will still charge what the market will bear. I don't believe prices would go down at all.

I agree with you. At some point the taxes will be added back and we will be worse off than now. Do you think our roads are bad now? Take off the gas tax and we might as well go back to dirt roads. GO WINGS!! |

It's time to drill!!!! There is over 100 billion barrels of oil in the US. If we ONLY used that - it would keep us independent for 20 years.
If we stretch it out for 60 years, and keep using SOME mid-east oil, the price WILL DROP SIGNIFICANTLY!!! Demorats (who Michiganders inexplicably keep voting for) are preventing that drilling! |

Toll roads aren't the answer. We'll just find and use the back dirt roads everywhere.
With the economy what it is these days, there's no easy answer. Let the roads rot! |

We're the ones supporting YOUR lazy welfare @$$!!! Why don't you give up a couple hundred a month in the name of making it easier to feed MY family. What a stupid idea to punish the hardworking people in the community while you drive back and forth to Wal-Mart on my dime. Nice. |

I wonder why there is no mention of making the concrete busting supertrucks (80 tons) pay for the damage they are doing?
I wonder why Big Oil is spending millions on mineral rights leases in West Michigan with no intention of drilling? I wonder why there is only one new oil/gas well drilled in the Niagra Reef formation since Richard Cheney's "Secret" energy policy meeting closed to all except OIL and Gas billionares? Anyone in the business can tell you.....there is a "Glut" of oil... and it is a bad investment to drill new oil wells. How long before America sees the Vice President as the price fixing Mafia Don he is? |

What an opportunity that would be for the politicians to increase our taxes without most people noticing. They would have to come up with a tax to replace the gasoline tax to support our roads. Of course, unlike the gasoline tax, it would also be available for pet projects (pork) and, in the process, they would manage to sneak in an overall increase in tax.

"Planned obsolescence" is a needed gear in the economic balance. The difficult part is finding the balance to begin with... then maintaining it without teetering too far one way or the other.
One small example: If paved roads lasted nearly forever, cars would last a bit longer due to a less wear. Think of the trickle down effect in lost jobs. From the MDOT to the auto repair shop to the people manufacturing auto parts. This is slightly where the balance has been offset. If Michigan still had the unconditional following of the auto industry, a little rough road would mean more jobs and job security. |
