They should just ban female crab catching period and done with for a couple of years. That would help the population to recover, since one female crab makes a LOT of crab babies.

If you hire illegal aliens instead of temp workers in the picking houses, the crabs will reproduce faster and better. Of course they will need a representative to lead them. Maybe Craba de Maryland?

We need a total ban on crabbing for maybe two years. We should subsidize those whose living depend on them - yes, that means with your taxes; deal with it - and pressure Virginia to do the same.

If there's such a shortage of crabs/crabmeat then how can Chesapeake Bay Gourmet sell millions of crab cakes on QVC ????

I'll tell you why - THEY USE ASIAN BLUE SWIMMING CRABS but still use our Chesapeake Bay's name to make millions of dollars. I say sue their butts and use that money to support our watermen until we can replenish our Bay.

I remember a friend of mine telling me years ago about seeing watermen stomping crabs on the pier and kicking them back in the water because they were getting too many crabs and wanted to keep the prices going up by not bringing in a whole lot of crabs ...

There are very few waterman that earn all their money from crabbing. 15 million seems like a lot of tax dollars to be thrown away. Why feel sorry for them? They made LOTS of money while the sun shined, why didn't they put some away when it doesn't? Allow them unemployment benefits like everyone else who lost their job. OH YEAH, they'll get that too.
