Is Your Lawmaker Giving Back State Pay?

Full story: voices.washingtonpost.com

Six weeks after leaders of Maryland's Senate and House of Delegates asked lawmakers to return a fraction of their pay and join in solidarity with 70,000 state workers who have been furloughed for up to 10 days to help close the state's budget gap, just over half have done so.

So only Del. Dick Sossi has signed the forms to give up 8 days of pay. Sossi is a good guy who has always supported state employees.
So where is Del. Mike smigiel and Sen EJ Pipkin on the list? They have not signed up to stand in solidarity with all the state and local government employees who have had to take unpaid days off.
If Smigiel says he'll keep the cash but give it to charity, maybe he should give it to the Maryland Firemen's association. Smigiel tried to privatize the state Medevac program operated by the state Police and dismantle the MIEMS system and oversight board that provides advanced training and other help for local volunteer fire companies that provide emergency medical services.
What a hypocrite Smigiel is!

Just curious, Medics...what is your personal grudge here? You continuously vilify the Del and Sen every chance you get--what is your issue here?

I don't care what his grudge is. If I have to give up 10 days of pay I think the politicians should also. If they really cared about the state then give up the pay. I am losing over $3,000 this year in furloughs so I applaud the GOVERNOR for signing 10 days of pay back to the state. I would like to see a list of EVERY POLITICIAN and if they are giving money back or not since they are protected from law and cant be forced to give it back.

It is pretty obvious, Phoebe, or is it Andi. It is hypocritical for a politician to try to throw state employees such as State Police pilots and the paramedics and nurses flying MEDEVAC out of their state jobs-- and then not suffer a bit of the pain the state employees have suffered with unpaid furloughs.

Turning the MEDEVAC program, and the MIEMS system that works closely with local fire companies and EMS units, over to private contractors-- which is what Smigiel and Pipkin wanted to do-- is a slap in the face to state workers. And it would harm the average citizen needing emergency transport. The politicians should at least turn over their 8 or so days of pay to the MEDEVAC program as a penance for their sins.

Just read an article where Del Smigiel is not gving the state of MD 8 days of pay but is instead giving the 8 days worth of pay to a group of charities that can benefit from it. I applaud him for taking this action and apologize for not knowing this prior to my reply.

Ask if your lawmakers are/have been paying their State taxes!

Here in Georgia some are NOT.

Again - different rules for different folks.

No need to apologize, "State Worker," since you had no choice on when you had to give up your pay, regardless of when your mortgage payment was due or your kids were sick and needed medical care.

These politicians-- especially Smigiel-- say they "will" give money to a charity at Christmas. Show us the receipts to prove it. they will get a tax deduction for a charity donation, too. Maybe Smigiel is giving money to religious groups that he is courting for votes from their members, so it is really a lot like a political donation.

As a state worker, you don't have those options. Your family suffers now. You are not a fat cat politcian who can do what he wants and say maybe he is giving money to his hand-picked political charities. No apologies needed from the hard working state employees!

.LAND GRABS.

For years activists from America and Europe (especially Britain eg. Peter Hain) fought the walls of Apartheid.

When they did came down Dr. Henrik Verwoed's (the then Prime Minister's) wife Betsy said that the world will see that Apartheid had to be there for protection.

Was she right?

What has happened is that since so called "freedom" ZIMBABWE can no longer feed themselves as they have chased thousand of white farmers off their land, brutally attacking them.

The South African blacks are starting to "grab" the white farmers land in South Africa at present and have burnt some down to the ground.

This is what the white South African's feared from the blacks (hence Apartheid).

It is now happening.

Where are those activists and why do they not try and stop this thieving of land or "land grabs" and the brutalizing of innocent white farmers. After all these countries put us whites in this mess.

Put sanctions on South Africa as in Apartheid days or boycott the 2010 Soccer World cup.

We have been informed by our Minister of Land Affairs that land grabs have started in South Africa and instead of him doing something about it, it has become a threat and he is not protecting the white farmers or their land.

The South African farmers have given thousands of farms over to the blacks. They are not working them properly and many of these farms lie barren and unproductive.

Of late South Africa has had to import for the first time. Will we become another Zimbabwe?

HELP STOP IT NOW BEFORE THERE IS MORE BLOOD ON THOSE COUNTRIES HANDS WHO FORCED THE WHITES TO HAND OVER SOUTH AFRICA TO THE BLACKS.

Please help Spread this post.

More budget cuts announced this week and state worker jobs are now being eliminated for good, not just a few days' furloughs. But the fat cat politicians still have their jobs and paychecks.

there's a new social network group that was formed, called Stop Smigiel. A lot of EMS/fire company members are working to replace Smigiel as a delegate in the 2010 elections. some of them are joining this group on the ning network here:

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Pisces

Someone is in a very boisterous mood today, and you may want to make yourself scarce after a short spell in their company. Their idea of a joke may be your idea of extreme rudeness, or they could take pleasure in being argumentative just for the sake of it. Don't let this person wind you up or you'll go off pop through sheer tension.
