Former Pine Knot Student wrote: <quoted text> I attented Pine Knot from October 2009 to November 2010. It is a really good center and is actually run by the forest service so it is on the small side, though it means stricter rules and is a closed center. They offer 9 trades as well as high school diploma and ged programs. The rec program is alright, numerous options and trips every week to do fun things off center. While I was there, we didn't have many fights or huge crime, and when something happened it was taken care of pretty quick. A phone was stolen in my dorm and we were on lockdown for 3 days. Any more specific questions, please ask. Tell me more about Pine Knot. Do you always have 3 roommates? What about the evenings? Are there activities planned for the evenings? On the weekends, what kinds of activities are available? When are the kids able to go off the center? Are they supervised? Can relatives visit the center? Are there a lot of bad kids there, and is there a lot of racism? I want to know all the positives and negatives.

There's good & bad in all of them. It's up to you who you hang with & what you chose to do. Get in trouble or get job skills.

Job Corps was the closest thing to a Tech school we could find... and personally I think anyone should be allowed to go if they are truely looking/wanting what it offers... income should not stop you... lets face it some of those low income are only getting all those perks b/c they know how to work the system so why should those with a job who pay taxes not get the same benefit... even the rich have children not cut out for college... I am starting Job Corps in 2 weeks. I got in because I qualify for food stamps. And in other circumstances, you can be let in without having money being an issue. I had issues in high school, and I didn't finish. Job corps is a chance for me to give myself a better life and something I feel I can do to help others. I read the posts you had, and I couldn't agree more. I'm doing this so my future family has a wonderful life. I want my kids to be provided for, and the nursing skills will help me in caring for them. I was raised God first, family second, and everything else will follow. I'm preparing now, so my kids can come second to God.

They didnt cope with public schools well?? Im just curious to know why not in public schools.? This is a college type program (job training) not school. The only kids who attend there for high school credits are ones who dropped out.

They didnt cope with public schools well?? Im just curious to know why not in public schools.? Some people end up falling between the cracks or have familial problems. While I was in high school I moved more than 10 times during for 3 years. Then to get out of my parent's house I took my GED and went to college. My mother insisted I make my permanent address where I had been living with her instead of the dorm I moved into. She took me for every bit of my college loans. I could not pay to stay in school. So I decided to attend job corps and even there could not take advantage of the opportunity they gave me to pay for all of my classes at a nearby community school in default loans. Before then I had been quite close to being homeless not being close to any family members and not wanting to be looked at as a burden of a young adult that needed to be raised all over again. I graduated job corps with 5 certifications in the medical field.

The Informer wrote: Alright, dumbass. Obviously you do not know much about the program. There is no "qualifying" as far as income is concerned. The only real "qualification" is that the student is between the ages of 16-24 upon enrollment. <quoted text> Its for people: 1) 16-24 2) resident of the U.S 3) Meet federally set income guidelines 4) be from an area that has conditions that will keep you from getting an education or job (macon, ga) 5)be able to benefit and complete the training 6) be drug and alcohol free upon entering and departing the program 7) abstain from any acts of violence *source is from "Job Corps Fact Sheet"

I work at Earle C. Clements Job Corps. I work with students in the the dorm, I'm an Residential Advisor (RA). I have worked there for 8 months. There are a lot of students that go there and actually do what is expected of them! I have seen many of my students graduate. It makes me proud to see them complete and move forward with their lives. There are those few students who just don't care and mess up, for the most part the students out there are kind, respectful and caring. Every where you go there are people who are just like the students in Job Corps's, at least they are not out there breaking the law. For some Job Corps is the only place where they have had a roof over their head, food in their belly and clothes on their back. I'm glad Job Corps is there to help people. Job Corps gives our young people a place to grow and become working Americans. I AM PROUD THAT I WORK THERE!! It takes a special kind of person to work there.
