I TRULY BELIEVE THAT A PERSON SHOULD PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKES, I MEAN THAT IS THE ONLY WAY THAT ANYONE CAN LEARN IS BY THE MISTAKES THAT THEY MAKE. NOW I ALSO FEEL THAT JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE DID MAKE A MISTAKE AND BREAK THE LAW IT DOESN'T GIVE SOMEONE THE RIGHT TO MIS-TREAT AN INMATE OR THEIR FAMILIES. PERSONALLY MY SON'S FATHER IS IN PRISON AND I HAVE DEALT WITH THE WAYS THAT COUNSELORS AND GUARDS TREAT NOT JUST THE INMATES BUT THE INMATES FAMILIES. OKAY SO YEAH THE INMATE MAY HAVE BROKEN A LAW BUT THAT DOESN'T GIVE ANYONE A RIGHT TO TREAT THEIR FAMILY LIKE SHIT. I HAVE HAD THE GUARDS BE REALLY HATEFUL TOWARDS ME AND MY FIANCE' FOR NO REASON AT ALL. I TRULY FEEL THAT SOME PEOPLE GET A POWER TRIP AND THEY CANNOT HANDLE AN AUTHORITIVE ROLE. ALSO EVERYONE MUST ACTUALLY LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. I MEAN LOOK AT ANYONE WHO HAS EVER BEEN TO PRISON IN THEIR LIFE 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THEY END UP GOING BACK. I LOOK AT THAT AS A PROBLEM WITHIN THE SYSTEM. OBVIOUSLY THE SYSTEM IS NOT ENFORCING ENOUGH PROGRAMS FOR INMATES TO DO BETTER WHEN THEY ARE ON THE "OUTSIDE". EVEN SOME INMATES ARE IN PRISON FOR JUST BEING IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME AND THEY END UP SPENDING THE MOST INFLUENTIAL YEARS OF THEIR LIVES IN PRISON. MIND YOU WHILE THEY ARE IN THERE THEY ARE BECOMING INSTITUTIONALIZED AND ALSO HAVE TO ADAPT TO THE SURROUNDINGS IN ORDER TO SURVIVE THE PRISON LIFE. WHILE ADAPTING THEY ARE ALSO LEARNING A NEW WAY OF LIFE WHICH IS LEARNING TO BE A BETTER CRIMINAL. THEN THESE INMATES ARE RELEASED AND EXPECTED TO BE NORMAL CITIZENS. GUESS WHAT IS ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN. THAT IS NO ONE'S FAULT EXCEPT FOR THE SYSTEM THAT FAILED THEM. i AM NOT SAYING PRISON LIFE SHOULD BE EASY BUT PEOPLE MUST REALIZE THAT EVERYONE IN PRISON IS NOT IN FOR THE SAME CHARGES. SOME PEOPLE JUST MADE A BAD DECISION AS A KID OR TEENAGER AND THEY ENDED UP IN THERE. YES THEY SHOULD PAY BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY SHOULD NOT BE TREATED FAIRLY EITHER. IF PEOPLE WOULD JUST OPEN THEIR EYE'S AND REALIZE THAT NOWADAYS YOU CAN GO TO PRISON FOR SOME PETTY CHARGES AND IT COULD EASILY BE YOU IN THERE OR YOUR LOVED ONE. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE TREATED?
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL IS THAT IT IS NOT ONLY HURTING THE INMATES BUT THERE ARE CHILDREN OUT HERE WHO NEED THEIR FATHERS AND MOTHERS. THESE CHILDREN ARE THE ONES WHO ARE REALLY PAYING THE COST. IF WE DO NOT SET UP PROGRAMS THAT ACTUALLY WORK TO SHOW FATHERS AND MOTHER TO BE BETTER PARENTS AND CITIZENS THEN IT WILL ONLY CONTINUE A VISCIOUS CYCLE. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THE TRUTH IS IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY WITHOUT INMATES WE WILL THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT GET OUR TAXES SO EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY. BUT REMEMBER THAT MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL... |

Nice point. I would think that the jails are in the poor counties because the rich folk don't want jails/criminals in their backyards. Really, who would? |

This is an issue of huge importance. I think that there should be people working daily to develop programs for people who are getting out of prison. These people need jobs, and they need places where they can live. If you see the issue as I do, then you see that money spent on helping people find and keep jobs and housing is well spent when the consequence is more illegal behavior for illegal means, and hopelessness. Hopefully there will be someone working on a program like this soon. |

"Been There Done That
Saturday Feb 17 Well i just wanted to say this....To those saying that prison is a good place for those who break the law. First of ...everyone deserves a second chance. Everyone makes mistakes and has to pay for them. But let me let you in on a little secret... to those who has no symphany. The first time i went...i was like " Hell yeah". Why? Cause everything we ate was real food. No Mysterious meat. Vegetables straight from the garden. We got to wear our own street clothes. I worked at a Headstart everyday. That their should show that they believed in me by working there huh? We got to rent movies every weekend, AND order out every weekend. Ya know like McDonalds, Subway, and stuff like that. You see...unlike the likes of you, they believed in us, they saw our inner beings. Just because we made a mistake in our lives didn`t mean we had to be treated like animals while incarcerated. And this was at a class D jail. And even when i went to prison. It was like i was on college campus. We could go as we pleased, we had a store and could buy basically the same things you would but at your local grocerie store. And im not trying to sy that i enjoyed it. Because every passing day i thought and missed my family. And that`s what hurts the most. BUT...i was comfortable during my stay but it was nothing even though all that sounded good LIKE HOME!!!" And that is whats wrong with the prison system. Make it feel like home so they WANT TO GO BACK. How pitiful a person you must be to actually brag about how good it was. Its bad enough that we know it, but to have it rubbed in our faces is just cheap. Your attitude about jail tells me all I need to know about you. How can you sit there and say that they deserve a second chance? What about the woman that has been raped...where is her second chance to live without the pain of that memory? What about the child who was beaten repeatedly...where is her second chance for a normal life? What about the families that are ripped apart because some idiot drove drunk...where is there second chance? Guess what, they don't have one. They have to live with the pain and the grief while you live it up watching cable, renting movies, and bragging over who's the better criminal, all the while eating better than most hard working Americans who have just enough money to be broke and strive to do the right thing. You and your kind are a pathetic excuse for humanity and I agree with the person earlier who said take the animals from the pound to the jail and the criminals to the pound. At least those helpless animals deserve to eat a damn steak while watching television. I would at least feel better about how my tax dollars were spent. |

What in the world makes you think it shouldn't be hard for felons? You tell me of ONE just one crime that is victimless and I will not only apologize, but will sit here and think about my stance and your point of view. There is a difference between a violent crime and a non violent crime, but neither of those categories contains a victimless crime. Maybe some non violent felons can rehabilitate and earn a second chance. But the key word there is earn. It damn sure shouldn't be handed to them. Its no big secret that if you commit a crime, you WILL have a much harder time finding a decent job and getting some things that people who abide by the law get. It's also no big secret that people in general tend to lump people into categories of criminal and non criminal with no distinction as to what crime is committed. And its no big secret that all of the criminals knew this BEFORE breaking the law. So guess what, if you want to be treated like everyone else, quit breaking the law. Plain and simple. If you are going to break the law, then know you will have to work five times as hard to prove yourself as anyone else, and that is after you have tried ten times as hard to get a second chance. You don't have to like it, but thats the way it is. So you stop whining about the second chance you deserve. Earn it instead of expecting those of us who do the right thing to hand it to you on a silver platter.

Well, how about this...the next time a rapist or child molester is released from prison why don't you give them a job around your house? They have to eat too, right? |

Wow, I'm sure you have some good points there, and I must confess that I have not read all the arguments on this post.....but let me remind you that there is no such thing as a victimless crime. Somewhere along the line, crime affects everyone. I wish I had time to address all those crimes you list as victimless. I don't but let me just address writing bad checks. Merchants don't absorb the cost of bad checks, they pass the cost off to the consumer in higher prices for their products. Yes it puts the check writer in debt, but do you know how many of these felons that don't pay their debts? Instead they declare bankruptcy, which (among other things) has made the government put into effect harsher bankruptcy rules, which makes it more difficult for the person who really needs to file bankruptcy. So you see, somewhere down the line, someone is affected by a felon's crime. You just have to think a bit beyond your nose to figure it out. No offense intended.

There is no such thing as a "victimless crime". Bad check writers hurt EVERYONE. They hurt the merchant, they hurt the general public because that cost gets passed onto the consumer. And, just how do you figure that stealing is a victimless crime??? If I stole your car, would you feel my crime was "victimless"? Or would you feel victimized? And, while drugs may hurt the user, it also hurts the public. Drug use usually results, in the user having to steal, rob, etc. to get the money for his/her habit. |
