Many people mistakenly think loud pipes make drivers notice them, however the noise from the pipes is projected backwards, so that does nothing to alert the drivers in front of the bike to its presence. All loud pipes do is make other people more hostile towards ALL motorcyclists.

It also alerts drivers next to you who are often on the phone not paying attention when they switch lanes. Happens alot, believe me. Also, my bike is 29 years old, there are no factory pipes available for it. I run baffles in it but will I still be ticketed?

Then how are me and the rest of my dim followers going to race with the wind and the feeling that we're under? It just might be time to break out The Disrespect Card.

Hmmm - if a continuous loud from a two-wheeled vehicle is a safety feature, perhaps we could have battery-powered noise gadgets for us bicyclists. Just asking....
Seriously though, as a resident of a fairly busy street I have to say that summers are blighted by the noise put out by these overgrown 'baby-men'(thank you for the inspiration, Arnie) crying for attention.
It's high time the CPD dealt seriously with these puerile attention-seekers. Same goes for that other set of noise-making lowlife on the road: people with overly loud sound systems and open windows. Get headphones!
Good to hear this news from Lake Geneva!
Are you listening, CPD? Mayor Daley? It's about *everyone's* quality of life!

There are basically two kinds of riders - those who love to ride and those who must be seen riding. The rolling flatulence sound announces the appearance of the latter “poseurs extraordinaire”.
There is no reason to be able o hear a two-wheeled vehicle going up and down block after block more than a mile away at 2 AM. Saving lives at that distance – how safety conscious. It is fun to hear the “loud pipes save lives” mantra coming from someone with a woman riding pillion wearing only high heels, thong, bikini top and sun glasses. Sure give the plastic surgery residents practice on the skin graft poster children.
I ride a BMW – and our loud transmissions save lives ...

Holy Crap, why the hell do you live in the city then. what did you expect? morning dew and birds chirping all day? Move to the country if you don't like noise. My god, some people are just complete idiots.

It would be a horrible world if everybody was as selfish and me-centered as men who drive loud motorcycles. Imagine believing that it's your "right" to disturb the peace of everyone around you.

When will Chicago police begin doing the same, arresting motorcyclists with loud mufflers. I see cops just ignoring them as they go by with their deafening sound. This is a violation of the Chicago decibel ordinance. I just heard some go by at 6:55 in the morning, downtown, and often hear them between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Come on, Chicago. Get with it.

Just a couple of thoughts:
I would think that the Chicago Police Department has more pressing matters than ticket patrol for loud motorcycles.
I will be happy to get rid of my loud pipes once there are laws in all 50 states making traffic accidents which a person dies a felony with a mandatory sentence of at least 10 years-and if you are talking on a cell phone, shaving, reading, texting, putting on make up, or any other activity rather than driving the sentence should double.
I will be riding a lot more due to $4-5.00 per gallon gas prices and if just one person hears me before seeing me it could save my life.
Before some "intelligent" person tells me to wear a helmet and safety gear-I do and I consider the pipes to be safety gear as well.

Well for one LOUD PIPES DO save lives. But there are mufflers made that have a nice sound to them and still keep the Winers off our backs! So Just keep the Baffles Rolling My Brothers and don't forget we know who the noise bothers, We know when to use the noise and when not ! Be safe

You clearly have nothing in your head worth protecting.
