I heard someone said that Lingle told Aiona that the welfare recipients should eat cake, but Aiona said no cake, poi. And the HGEA worker said no more Aloha Fridays, it's now Furlough Fridays. Yeah, Lingle, at Furlough Fridays, it's poi, not cake. No, not poi, red dirt. Everyone sing "Got no money because it's Furlough Friday. Eat red dirt, no money for poi."

I live in Waianae, just down the street from section 8 housing. Those "needy" folks spend their days hanging out in the parking lot, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes,(and lord knows what else) and partying everynight. It's been this was for 30 years. Welfare just perpetuates the problem from one generation to the next. Cut them off and let them feel the "heat" like the rest of us.

The Micronesians that get free housing, food, full medical and monetary assistance just as soon as the plane lands is one of the major problems in Hawaii. While local people that worked and lived here all their lives get cut off and end up homeless on the beach.

The local governments could care less about its people.

Yes there are those people that take advantage of the system, but also there are many good people that did everything right and still get screwed by the system. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. Something like that?:)

I agree. If you want one penny of my hard earned money confiscated from my family, there needs to be strings attached. If you want welfare, I want to see you cutting the grass, picking up trash, etc. Politicians like Suzanne Chun Oakland are so generous with money that does not belong to them. Where's the ACCOUNTABILITY when handing out my $$$$$$$?

.... class warfare.... here it comes...

You asked for it Hawaii.... Toyota...

People who purchase foreign import cars like BMW and Toyota, and give our US money to foreign owned corporations, are the very same ones to complain about our tanking economy.

Too stupid to see their own security is in jeopardy with more of these poor people who have nothing to lose now.

Yeah, buy foreign, turn your backs on your fellow less fortunate US citizens, see what you get.

Priests make you feel guilty if you don't contribute or tithe to the church.

Politicians don't have that problem. They confiscate $$$ from the populace to hand out to the needy.

What do they have in common?

Both Priests and Politicians want to take credit as if they actually "EARNED" the money that they are giving away.

I own a FORD. Foreign imports brings down the cost of domestic cars due to competition. I thank the owners of foreign imports who make my Ford more affordable.

The state workers are going through furlough--don't ask us to sacrifice further.

The legislature got their raise of 36%.

(Off subject a little)

If you all were paying attention, Ford made a profit of ONE BILLION DOLLARS this past quarter without taking a penny of government bailout money.

It's not about buying foreign or domestic. It's about the unions who are bleeding us dry. Unions in Hawaii as well.

"Eat the Rich" I totally understand what you are saying. I am speaking from experience reference import cars, Totota. We owned GM cars all our life and and repairing was part of life. 10 years ago we bought a Ford Tempo used. Not counting the body work from rusting, we just about replaced everything on our Tempo at our Ford dealership. Thousands and thousands of dollars. Lack of quality. 4 and one half years ago we bought a 96 Toyota 39,000 miles, from a friend of ours. We maintain it. Our toyota still looks brand new. Never have spent one penny on it other than normal maintenance. Next year, we may buy a new Toyota because of the wonderful experience with this Toyota. Not to mention, 30-33 MPG in town and 36-40 MPG highway. We use 93 octain gas. Toyota had the right initial manufacturing goals. QUAILITY..NOT NUMBERS OF CARS OUT THE DOOR TO DEALERSHIPS like GM, Chrysler, and Ford. Plus, years ago I sold cars, GM, Subaru, and Nissan. The quality, what came back for repairs, was all for the imports. That plus our Totota made a believer out of me.

GM, Ford, Chrysler all make pieces of junk. They don't last for more than seven years.
I'll stick with Toyotas that last 16+ years, are reliable, get good mileage. Until the US understands quality control, we will continue to lag. Just as with our education--too many bleeding hearts with soft heads diverting funds to where it does the least.

"Von" A big Aloha. Just curious, why is Hawaii bringing the Micronesians to your islands?

"Von"., just one more point. Our first trip to Hawaii, mentioned yesterday, we liked Hawaii so much, we went to a real estate agency and inquired about buying a home on the north shore. We were told not to do that. We would not be welcome on the north shore as we were outsiders.

While crime and family destabilization may be two of the more obvious results of the welfare state, there are many others. The stigma for single mother births has virtually disappeared. Intergenerational dependency on government programs with the related lack of skills for self-sufficiency, much like a farm animal unable to live without the farmer for food and shelter, has created people without hope or ambition. People today have on average a much higher rate of time preference meaning that there is a much greater tendency to spend than save today than in the past. This is also reflected in the contemporary attitude of the need for immediate gratification. The social safety net influences the way people save and spend money. Thus we see section 8ers with huge flatscreen TV's and Nissan Titans paid for by the US Taxpayer.

The incentives put in place continued to spread throughout society due to the welfare state. The effects on crime are direct and indirect. The direct influence was that with an unfeeling non-judgmental social safety net irresponsible behavior was subsidized. You could be a drug-addicted single mother and the government paid for your habit. The discipline of personal responsibility was broken and the children suffered. Indirect effects included devaluing the importance of men, no longer having the responsibility of providing for their families; the government now picked up the tab. Attitudes toward women have been reduced to "bitches and hoes" in some areas, since women are no longer seen as a potential monogamous mate, but rather a sexual conquest without obligation. Increasingly, children were raised by single mothers who were oftentimes dependent on government welfare programs. Girls continue to model their mother’s behavior and the cycle of dependency continues. These incentives were especially detrimental for boys since they no longer had good male role models to emulate living at home. In some cases, this has led to increased gang membership for a sense of belonging and role models. Is it any wonder that crime and incarceration rates began to spike?

Catch up with the chores today, especially if you've got a long list of them and you want to get through them all before Christmas. You're feeling nicely efficient without wanting to work yourself into the ground, so carry on at a steady pace. A few well-chosen words in a certain person's ear will be more effective than a lengthy conversation at other times.
