I know that this idea won't fly, but here goes. Instead of a tax increase, why can't we tack on a fee to parents for their child's education. I know that it sounds cold but shouldn't the ones that are using the service (education) be the ones paying for it? I think that a quarterly fee per child might have a sobering effect on the whole situation. And, just maybe, if the parents have to pay for some of the education, they might want to get more involved with their child's progress.

The State, C&C and Unions cry for tax increases while people in the local sector are still losing their businesses and their jobs. Where will this end? The unions and the government are doing just fine while more and more local people are going homeless. The unemployment rate is over 10% now and you still want more money and benefits. This makes me sick.

Shame on the Legislature. You are stealing from your own people. I always respected Donna Kim. So do your magic and don't cop-out us. Hang in there.

How stupid can these people be?

If there is no money in the economic engine, would good would taking money out (taxes) of that engine do?

This is akin to removing motor oil from the engine.

CUT, CUT, CUT, not impose an even higher tax burden on the People barely able to survive.

It is a recipe for higher crime rates in the end.

Dissolve the Unions behind this stupid idea and remove that mandatory provision from our State constitution.

Evidence of Hawaii Democrat socialism is found in the State Constitution requiring mandatory collective bargaining, which is absent in our federal US Constitution.

Get rid of that and you get rid of higher taxes.

It's called trickle down rip-offnomics, where the Unions take and pee on the rest of us, except we can't see it until the legislators think about ripping us off this way.

What the Unions take, takes from other services----hence the need to consider hiking YOUR taxes.

I thought these people in the hgea and legislature were bright people. Some of them may be, but to think that a tax hike would bring in more money is STUPID! All it would do is raise prices and people will spend less resulting in less revenues to the State. Wake up!!! Reduced spending, pay cuts, lay-offs, and furloughs are the way to go. The State budget is over-bloated.

Oh, so the unions are for a tax hike? Sounds good to me. Raise taxes on the Unions 50% with no benefits or pay increase package.

Y not tax the tourist who come here? Aren't they the ones with disposable incomes spent on enjoying our islands? Aren't they the ones who use our roadways and facilities too? Y not start a lottery to raise funds for our poor education system? Lots of people fly to Vegas each year and drop off loads of money there so Y not try to get them to buy a lottery ticket here. Even the visitors would probably buy a lottery ticket knowing it would help our education system. Y not tax the people who who can afford it instead of struggling businesses? Y not think outside the box!

lol. This is your idea of thinking outside the box? It's the same story peddled for years. Nothing new or breathtaking about it by any stretch.

RAISING TAX ON THE UNEMPLOY AND POOR PEOPLE IS LIKE MILKNG A DEAD COW!!!!

It will cause more locals moving out of state and more business shutting down and more forclosure...

Obamas conomic policies mirrors our local politicians as we follow Califronia to the debt pit...

VOTE ALL THESE LIBERAL POLITICIANS AND THEIR UNIONS OUT!!!! THE ONLY SOLUTION!!!!

Increasing the percent of taxes to cover losses due to a state and national economic downturn is morally wrong. It's stealing. It's the mob collecting more protection money from the merchants. Stop trying to find clever ways to collect more taxes and cut back on spending like the rest of society has.

No NO No No new taxes. We out here in the public sector (non government - non union) are bailing as fast as we can but we just can't keep up with you. The GET is a very bad tax, it is not a sales tax, it is a compounding tax that destroys everything in its wake.
I may agree to a tax on sodas, candy, junk food, etc as that would raise some money but also be healthier if we all avoided junk food. Also booze and ciggie tax OK. But GET - no.

Cut the dam goverment spending already. CUT the unneeded jobs and all the duplicate jobs. This state is run by the unions that is why this state WILL not cut the unneeded services and jobs. Raising taxs is ABSURD as we already have some of the highest taxs in the country. We need new leadership that is not tied to a dam union VOTE.

Look all you losers in Hawaii. We HGEA, DOE and trade unions have come to expect a certain lifestyle. Even though you private sector lolos take less money than you could make on the mainland, even though even you city workers like police and fire make less than you could on the mainland, we have always made more than most on the mainland in state funded jobs. Plus, up until Cayetano days, we had the best fringe benefits in the Nation and still have pretty good benefits.

So all you losers just need to get another job to pay more in GE taxes to support our lifestyle. That's just the way it is. You voted our guys in with 90% of the winners part of the one Plantation Democrat Party so you must have wanted it.

So work a little harder, quit complaining and maintain our rightful lifestyle.

Aloha and Arigato.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Virgo

Someone is being headstrong and wilful, and absolutely determined to do what they want. Mercury is retrograde and it's a Full Moon in Cancer with a lunar eclipse all happening tonight! This could lead to some heated discussions and possibly even rows, as you argue the toss back and forth. It might be best to accept that there's very little possibility of reaching an agreement rather than to get locked in a stubborn battle of wills. Besides, you don't want anything to spoil what promises to be a very enjoyable New Year's Eve. Have fun!
