Folks don't recognize that the weak dollar is causing prices for everything to increase recently. Notice gas prices, food prices, staple prices, etc. are all up by 10 to 20% or more. Many shoppers will suffer even more if the GE tax is increased by even 1/2%. If gasoline prices increase even more before the end of this year, everything will keep increasing in price. This is like a tax and is the cost of all the borrowing and spending by the Feds.

Since when is the SB opposed to a good old tax increase? I've never seen a SB editorial that opposed any tax. And why are you saving the .5% GET increase for rail? It won't help traffic congestion, it will bankrupt the county when they raise property taxes to pay for the operation of the rail. The problem is, you can't have it both ways. Last year you said the city needed to raise property taxes because "it costs more to run the city". This year you're saying "don't raise taxes because it will hurt the little guy". Make up your mind and stick to it. I think your response will be "raise taxes, but only if you need it".

I can assure you one thing. If the unions want our (their) legislators to raise taxes, this to shall come to pass. Our legislators have proven time and again that they cannot serve two masters and hence have chosen unions as their masters over the tax paying citizens of this State. I wonder if anyone, other than I, have taken the time to record all the promises made by campaigning politicans and then matched it against what promises were fulfilled and those tossed out with the campaign signs.

Even more important what really worries me is India has exchanged our money for 300 tons of gold...Plus, countries are considering using the Euro instead of the dollar to purchase oil. That is a dangerous sign. Aloha from Northeast PA.

Good observation. Oil prices, which are denominated in dollars, are increasing to make up for the weakness. The dollar is weak because we have flooded the global market with Treasury obligations, i.e. bonds and notes. These are the same obligations that were issued to finance TARP, the $787B Stimulus, and all other so-called "stimulus" packages. To make it even more absurd, we have a clueless House that passed a trillion dollar health care package, which will no doubt rely heavily on such debt financing. Talk about job killer.

No new taxes needed. Cut the entitlement mentality, left-wing, government union work force in half-by 50%! Then make them work harder and make up for the fewer lazy bums left over. Install a provision for all city council members, the major, the governor. If they don't act to save us money that way, then their salary will be cut by 75% after one month. We'll see whom they are loyal to. Guess themselves. Bingo, create a tax surplus, then cut taxes for the rest (private business) of Hawaii. Easy!

Thank you Blue Lips- Hawaii should do well in the next few years? well, NO - Waikiki is a run down POS area with crime and bad food. The people in Hawaii produce nothing. Totally useless. Close the schools - No amount of money will make these children of savages civil. To much ADD in their dna WASHINGTON (AP)-- Unemployment likely will remain high for the next several years because the economic recovery won't be strong enough to spur robust hiring, Federal Reserve officials warned Tuesday.

DOE should pay its teachers and administrators for performance only. They are all way overpaid given low test scores.

Here is the cost of the 17 furlough Fridays, which we have because the State refuses to consider other funds and/or raise taxes: 13,500 teachers get less pay and spend less. 177,000 students get an inadquate education. Higher dropout rates and lower earning power. More crime. Hawaii cements its reputation as a state that does not value education. Goodbye hi-tech reputation we were chasing. 177,000+ parents and guardians face having to pay for childcare, tutoring, etc., or take time off from work, etc. Those who oppose taxes shoud calculate how much not having a tax increase is really costing us.

OH GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! IT'S THE UNIONS! All problems with furloughs could be solved IF the unions agreed to a PAY CUT instead of working less for less money. This is strictly a "make the public" suffer. And the teachers are just moaning about how much the students lose when they could easily agree to a PAY CUT instead of the furlough days. THIS WHOLE MESS IS STRICTLY BECAUSE OF THE UNIONS AND THE DUMMYCRAP COCONSPIRITERS WHO RUN THIS PEOPLES RUPUBLIC OF HAWAII.
