Right on all the above. This is just the begining. High oil prices by our greedy investers buying up oil and reselling. We are twenty years late here on engery policy. I've been off grid here in Hilo for twenty years, fourty solar panels, 24 450 amp batteries new 1 kw wind mill ready to go up, 7.50 k inverters with three phase for shop. Generators running cooking oil no problem. This is the time for smart people to make money the oil industrie profits are up for grabs

The Hawaii Democrat controlled Congress can help ease the burden by decreasing the state taxes on gas, food and basic necessities. I doubt that will ever happen.

Energy dependence is probably the single biggest problem that locally determined public policy can actually solve.

Hawaii's destiny is in our own hands and the Gov has been asleep at the wheel for nearly six years.

Linda. Get to rehab, cut out the thorazine and get to work.

You're right, Dman! But don't lump "wave energy" and OTEC into the same pot. Solar, wind and even wave power are all intermittent and won't actually replace imported fuel oil that's currently burned to generate base-load power. Click on the "Hawaii's Energy Options" blog at the URL above for background and buzz on OTEC. I welcome your comments at that site.
You're right on about the intermittent nature of wind and solar. But once efficient storage technologies are developed, this will mitigate the downside of these two technologies...nothing against exploring OTEC and geothermal at the same time, though. All of our alternative energy options should be explored. Let's face it, there's a finite amount of oil and coal in the earth. Sooner of later, it will all be gone.

Thanks for that complete report. We are in the business of optimizing warehouses and reducing shipping costs by helping companies determine the dimensional weight of packages. As oil prices go up there is gold in light but relatively large boxes companies are shipping around the company and beyond. For further reference see: http://www.exprescube.com for more information on dimensional weight, shipping and optimization.

I live on the east coast but my son lives on Oahu. Your prices for everything are absolutely ridiculous. I feel sorry for you especially if you have a family. Here are some prices at our market as of
friday..broccolli .99lb...milk..3.15 a gallon, grapes .99 a lb., chicken breasts 1.69 a lb., eggs 2.19 a dozen, a 2500 sq. foot house on an acre lot 450k or less. How do you stand those prices?
It hurts.

Has anyone noticed--not only are fuel prices, electricity, buit food prices are going way up, remember when you could get 2 carry outs of soda for $5, not ON SALE it's $9.
And the 2/$5 was only a year and a half ago.
Our economy is going to hill in a hand basket.

We cut traffic in half on H1 and use of gas at the same time. Maryland did it in the 1970s. They limited who could drive on a given day. If your license plate ended in an even number you could drive on even-numbered days, car with odd numbers would drive on odd-numbered days. This requires a commitment to public transportaiton and car pooling, not the lip service we pay to car pooling today. It would cut traffic, and it wouldn't require an expensive train. Of course our lifestyles would require more sharing. But it could be done. And it wouldn't cost a dime.

The cost of living in Hawaii has gone up by 25% and I doubt that prices will come down. They only go in one direction. I understand if people want to relocate. Its getting very hard to justify the added expense of living in Paradise.
