I checked out the "takeover" too that day and was permitted inside the Palace grounds without stateing who I was- even though I am a caucasion, I was permitted inside because I asked politely and stated I would like to know more about what is going on. "They" let me in, and with smiles and handshakes...and I am a nobody- not media, not an elected official, and I was let in becuase I merely asked...and my friend next to me as well- of which also- is not Native Hawaiian. The point is, that everyone so far upset at what the Hawaii Kingdom folks did, are missing their point- doesn't anyone here remember the American Indian Movement? The Native Americans were placed in boarding schools up throughh the 1960's- in these schools - they were forbidden to speak their native tongue, dress in native clothes, or even wear their hair in "traditional" syle...it wasn't until some Native Americans took over the BIA building in DC and the last Indian shootout in 1972 on the Pine Indian Reservation did action come about- because prior to the shootout- the Native Americans protests were peaceful, they got screwed and the feds did not let the Indians have their own schools...but once the federal BIA building was taken over- the feds listened and now there are- through that action- SCHOOLS ACCROSS AMERICA run by Indians...this would never have happened had peaceful protests continued...facts are facts...

Historical grievances are real, but these pretenders to the throne are racist in a way the real kingdom never was.

It is good to be proud of the Hawaiian acceptance of diversity - and rejection of racism. And it is sad that 'aloha' has become such an oversused and misused word. Real aloha is acceptance - even if there is not agreement, eh?

Then, why should anyone not have aloha for these people who were doing what they thought was right? They meant no harm.

Perhaps instead of writing editorials against them other Hawaiians could help them understand (learn?) some more facts so that they can use their passion more effectively?

We are all going in the same direction. These people brought no shame to Hawaiians.

Don't buy into the snarky, cruel attacks from the people in the shadows who use any excuse to divide the Hawaiians and break their spirit.

Jennifer;
i am Kanaka Maoli and was very proud of the actions of the Hawaii Kingdom. You are the one who is disrespectful not only to your race but to your Kupuna's for your comments. My parents and grandparents would have been standing at the Palace gates along with the rest of the Kanaka Maoli in protest, in thier place stood my daughter and she was very proud of her race. Ku'e

The activities of Na kanaka Maoli, and Hawaiian Kingdom Government, has once again shown magnificent restraint. It was a long overdue action. I am also proud of my race,[British]. However history shows we haoles can not be proud of our treatment of Na Kanaka Maoli. Please look at the historical facts BEFORE posting egotistical comments. A legitimate government was illegally overthrown. Look at the vestiges: kama'aina are being forced to leave their homes and country, due to escalating living costs. Where are their stories?, who speaks for them?. How convenient for the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau!. So continue on with development of hotels, rental cars, desecration of ancestral burial grounds, sales of illicit substances, suppression of native language and culture, pollution of fishing grounds, property sales on sovereign soil, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Until Hawai'i is totally and utterly decimated and destroyed. Only than will the stryker brigade be allowed to tear up the White House lawn playing cowboys and inj'uns. It is the only area left untouched. This 2008 will be the last time I will ever visit Hawai'i, having been a malihini for over a decade. Other malihini will follow, when the truth becomes known, you cannot hide this reality forever. The sooner Na Kanaka Maoli take power the better, it is their right, it is their 'aina. No other people on this Earth have shown such restraint and maturity. Their actions deserve the highest credit.-Aloha.

You are not telling the truth. I wonder why... I was there almost the whole time as well as watching from the lanai at the Leg. they also turned away anyone who was white, a group of students from the big island AND Sen. Will Espero.

They broke and are breaking the law and should be prosecuted fully.

Blah blah blah
You can repeat the lie of the overthrow over and over... don't make it true.
The myth lovers love to make it seem like its all white mens fault....
A revolution occured... the USA assumed Kingdom debt... a legal vote was held and Hawaiians got a wonderful gift... US citizenship.
They will never ever EVER be allowed to establish their racial government... ever. Land? NOT ONE INCH! The ceeded lands are just that and like the palace belongs to ALL of the citizens of Hawaii, brown, yellow, white or whatever!

The Hawaiian people freely gave their land to the missionaries.

They should not have given it to them. I can't take sides now, but if someone gave me something then don't ask for it back later on. Back then and please correct me if I'm worng, but the Hawaiian people did not understand what land ownership was. Yet I can only sympathize with them after the fact.

Next time don't give everything away.

Was it not Captain Cook that gave the pretty Hawaiian girls all kinds of strange diseases because the Queen gave her blessing to him? I was not there, but this is what is written in the history books.

I kind of side with the Hawaiian people for being so free and open to every sailor that landed on their beaches yet they should have not been so naive.
