Hawaii is known as the aloha state - the open, loving, caring, accepting, etc. place. That attribute has always made me happy I live in Hawaii. Born and raised in Nanakuli. We've seen our share of negative publicity due to racism and prejudice. Compared to other places in the mainland our bigotry is mild. However, it does exist. We live in an imperfect world with imperfect people...that's no excuse.

How does one become a bigot, prejudiced and racist? Is it learned behavior? Is it a pre-determined choice at birth by your parents or care givers? Is it a choice made by ones experiences?

I guess in the legal world lawyers and judges are suppose to be neutral...

Depending on what side of the street you live on...lucky you live Hawaii or lucky you don't live Hawaii. I believe it's like that no matter where you live.

My answer: It's a personal choice.

I would say hawaii is VERY racist. Did you ever hear of Kill _______ Day in any other state? I thought so. I would think most kids learn these racist terms from the PARENTS. The same one's who can't teach their kids to speak english and wonder why the state has such poor school scores.

If you've ever had dogs as pets, you notice how 1-3 dogs can get along really fine. But as you have 5 dogs or more, they create a hierarchy or pecking order. They also create factions or leanings in friendship to certain dogs and not to others. As human populations increase, and increase faster than resources can allow, you too see factions, territorialism, us versus them thinking. Populations outgrowing its supply of resources, develop into creating & controlling resources as commodities. Then you get the haves & havenots. Resource distribution becomes terse.

Perhaps some people will stop singling out and targeting Hawaiians based on their national origin (Ko Hawai'i Pae Aina.)

Kudos to Chief Moon. He is one of the best things about Hawai'i.

If I recall, the attack in Waikele was deemed not to be a hate crime being racially motivated. Otherwise the prosecutor would have gone after it and the penalty would have been much higher.

If Moon is right in using this event as an example, then the prosecutors were wrong and the defendant should be going to jail a lot longer.

This state is on a racist level comparable to the deep south. Which is odd because there isn't very much diversity on the islands. 90% of the people have the same hair/skin/eye color. It just goes to prove that stupid comes in black white and beige.

Instead of have and havenots, why not say those that support themselved by going to school and working and those who spend their whole lives taking, contributing nothing to the world except more babies everybody else is expected to care for.

Which I am seeing more and more on Oahu, to the point where parents work longer years than they should to support generation who play games and watch tv all day and wait for welfare and feel sorry for themselves. No pride anymore.

Hawaii is one of the most racist places I have ever lived and that includes the South and all over the Pacific rim.

The difference is that folks in the islands are more upfront about it and you almost always know where you stand with someone.

I'll take out in the open racism over the cowardly low-life, under the breath, behind your back kind any day.

Yes, it is prejudiced.
Please stay away for your own safety.
"Paradise" is a myth perpetuated to bring tourists.
Unfortunately, too many forget to go back home.
And before you get all uppity on this post, remember that I could be talking about Australia, Miami, California, Las Vegas...
Now, who's prejudiced?

If they would have banged my parked car twice I probably would have called them worse.

It is threads like this that keep racism alive, I go all over and in years have never encountered any racism. It is all in the person's attitude.

And having the good sense to stay away from places where ANYONE would not be welcome.

End of discussion.

No, I don't believe threads like this keep it alive. I do agree it's in person's attitude so your point about this thread is moot.

You mention how people should stay away from places they are not welcomed. Well in this case, I don't think that applies to Waikele Shopping Center.

Moon is either correct or wrong. Either way, I think his remarks just confuses the issue.

true, and the big difference is that here we can joke about it and let it pass. not like on the mainland where you lose your job or ket shot.

Obviously I was referring to the homeless areas. I know for a fact some own guns and shoot at rocks in the water to keep in practice.

My point is, people stop and take pictures of homeless and their shelters. Wrong thing to do.

don't know why you blank out the word HAOLE. it is not a derogatory word, unlike the N, J, S, C words. you obvious take it as such, meaning you were never branded before exposed to the word HAOLE. now you know how other minority felt when they were branded and discriminated. glad to see you're not here in HI.

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Sagittarius

Watch out. Your mind is working overtime in full analytical mode, but you may be leaping to unfounded conclusions and reading too much into situations. The result of all this is that you might start to suspect someone's honesty or loyalty, and wonder what exactly they're up to. Don't accuse them of anything awful just yet because it may turn out that you were totally wrong about them.
