Hello, drivers. I'm the left lane of your favorite (or least favorite) limited-access highway. Try not to stay in me unless you are passing higher moving traffic.
Does anyone else think maybe we need an ad campaign with cute, animated roadways to re-explain this concept to people? |

I guess I'm a suggestion now... sigh...

Its not about the speed limit, its about impeading the flow of traffic. How many times have you been patient in the left lane while some jerk goes blowing by you in the right lane and cuts the slow left laner off? The left lane is for PASSING. if your not passing or in a reasonable amount of time going to pass someone MOVE OVER

I've driven many times on Germany's autobahns. Contrary to popular belief here, there are many autobahn sections that do have speed limits. However, one common thread on the autobahn, with or without speed limits, is that the left lane is for passing. It works amazingly well. If a faster car is overtaking, drivers move out of the left lane, in the rare instances when they are there to begin with.
I have never seen a road rage incident on a German road. Oh, one other interesting law in Germany: if the car in front of yours has an accident, and you leave without rendering assistance, you can be ticketed if anybody noted your license number. Perhaps courtesy shouldn't have to be legislated, but in some cases, even legislated courtesy works wonders. |
EXACTLY! |

Whoever wrote this editorial sure didn't do their homework. First, the various law enforcement agencies (as reported several times in the Sentinel) have been supported measures such as this because it makes our roads safer. Second, while higher speeds may increase the risks of death or injury in an accident, conflicts in speed between drivers is what causes most accidents. The autobahn's general flow of traffic travels at a much higher speed than here in the US, yet their rate of fatalities is much lower partly because they have a law such as what Mr. Bennett proposes (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road-traffic_saf... ).
Rather than sneer at "lead foots" maybe the writer of this editorial could first look into the various issues before commenting. |

Driving slower than other traffic while you are in the left lane is called "passive-aggressive" . In any case it is still aggressive driving and needs to be ticketed.

I have an idea - why don't we get the law enforment officials to enforce the laws. That would reduce road rage.

First, the left lane is no longer designed for passing. Extra lanes in Florida are used to ease traffic congestion.
Secondly, if all motorists drove the posted speed limit then there weren’t be anyone driving too slow or too fast. Thirdly, I wouldn’t be surprised if automakers come out with a chip that gets a signal from the road telling the car not to exceed the posted speed limit because there are so many unsafe, inconsiderate, irresponsible motorists on the roads. |

Hey Texas lady, your from that dumb ass state where people drive on the shoulder to let other people pass. In Florida any roads with 2 lanes or more the far left lane is the passing lane, go back to riding your herd, its tourist like you that make Florida roads such a pain in the neck

If there is such a law on the books about impeding traffic, why are the police officers not ticketing for it? They are too busy getting to where they are going by tailgating people in the left hand lane, so that they will move and my favorite is seeing them put on the siren to get past people (in traffic or not). I agree with what some people have said about going the speed limit, but the bigger issue is when people are doing well below the speed limit and binding up traffic during busy times in the highway.

That is not far if you get in the left lane and cant do the limit to pass move if some is wanting to pass you move dont be a retard and sit there and try to piss people off. And these people who drive big cars and want to ride in the left lane at 35 move or i will monster truck your damn car and trust it will happen. In FL you have to drive aggresive if not you cant drive bcuz of dumbass people and let me guess you are one of them. |

Unfortunately, it is not illegal. Irritating? Yes. But not illegal. To impede traffic by law, you have to be going a considerable amount below the speed limit. That is why you don't see cops pulling over left lane drivers. For now, it is legal. It's too bad. I've noticed Florida is the worst state for it's drivers doing this.

anyone who travels under 10 MPH of the posted speed limit can be ticketed but our lazy low paid cops wont do their jobs. They have a quota to meet on speeding tickets not slow driving tickets. |
