The students knew how to protest the appointment of a school president who grew up speaking. Therefore, I can assume they also knew what the symbols meant. Deaf does not mean stupid. Black people can be guilty of committing hate crimes toward other Black people. This incident is a hate crime. Which is not defined by one color on another color, or one gender on another gender. It means a crime, usually violent, motivated by prejudice or intolerance toward a member of a gender, racial, religious, or social group

This unfortunate incident certainly did open a "Pandora's Box" of sorts - it certainly shows that as far as we think we have gone, we still have a long way to go!
