response wrote: <quoted text> "FIRE ALL THE TEACHERS" as you say is the wrong solution. You don't seem to grasp what is going on about educational issues, so I suggest you educate yourself before you continue to make stupid statements. Then, I hope you can contribute to the discussion. Ouch! I guess I'd better go get another 30 years of teaching experience before sparring with fine minds like yours!

Believe me, it's not the greedy teachers pockets being filled. It's the waste that the DOE pertuates. Of the people employed by the DOE, less than half are teachers! But you know, more DOE employees, more union dues, yippee!

What's ruined our school system is that besides the "No Child Left Behind" law, we also have to adhere to the "Felix Decree." It's ridiculous when a public school system has to provide an aide to be with a child all day, some of these students have 2 or 3. That's why the cost is so high. Some of these students belong in a special facility that can cater to their medical/psycological needs. Also, a majority of these parents of children with special needs demand more and if they don't get what they want they sue! Whatever happened to taking care of your own?

As of fiscal year ending 2009, 12,000 educational officers are on the DOE payroll and custodians, cafeteria workers, make up another 3,000 employees. This total of 15,000 support staff is extremely high in comparison to the 11,000 teachers in the classrooms. The BUREAUCRATIC DOE has grown a huge BELLY in only the past ten years. Give credit to our Superintendent who has permitted this voracious DOE in consuming the tax dollars.

I've been in Hawaii for only a few years (since 2001) but have been truly impressed by the dedication of the teachers, here. The K-12 teachers, in particular, are heroic in my opinion (I am not a K-12 teacher). If there are problems in the system, and it appears that there are, they are NOT due to a lack of dedication from our teachers.

All these people and organizations have a heavy hand in building a BUREAUCRATIC DOE and certainly contribute to our failing school system by doing nothing."NOTHING" is a harsh word to describe our BOE but I cannot think of another word to describe this group . As for the legislators, they will always act in ways to enrich themselves. For instance they will pad the educational budget with their famous cry "ALL FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN" but really they are padding the budget because the percentage of their take will become higher. The two unions are useless and only exist to pay their own wages. I agree that the Superintendent is not the only one in this huge "SCAM OPERATION OF MILKING THE TAX DOLLARS" but she can play a key role by calling in Federal investigators to start an investigation of any wrong doings within the DOE organization and its supporters.

Everybody in Hawaii knows this, except the "MORONS" in the DOE. Your statement is equivalent to a third grader, so you may continue to discuss per pupil spending in Hawaii now as a qualified 4th grader.

Please spare me, the principals and vice-principals have no clue to what is being taught in the classroom. I have shown a homework assignment that was impossible to solve to the principal and was told "that is not part of the curriculum" and "it's only practice and doesn't count" meanwhile the idiot teacher keeps merrily collecting their pay.

One thing we can all agree on, is the fact that we must throw more money at this problem.

Revisit this article in the context of furlough Fridays. Tell me why the DOE had to cut from the classroom.

Again and again the DOE will give us numbers that are way out of line and Gary Kubota a so called journalist for Star Bulletin will print it. I am referring to the report of the US census bureau which reported that Hawaii spends $11,060 per child. The actual amount spent is $4,435. The difference here is too large to be considered as a mistake. Sandy Goya, the DOE spokesperson, also , did not notice this mathematical difference. Kubota should have at least gone to the office of the Assist. Superintendent of Business and Fiscal Affairs to confirm these numbers before presenting it to the public. Maybe James Brese gave him the wrong numbers in the first place.

A 17 day furlough of teachers will make the $4,435 spending less and I will have to figure out this mathematical problem and report to you later.

With a 17 day furlough, the $4,435 spent on each child in the State will reduce to $4,075. Utah is the lowest at $5,060 and we are lower than the lowest.

If the DOE only increased the amount spent on each pupil by $1,000 to at least $5,000, no 17 day furlough would be necessary. With nearly THREE BILLION DOLLARS at their disposal, they should not raid other funds. They have enough money to bail themselves out of this economic crisis.
