Close vote moves Colo. closer to gay civil unions

Full story: Worcester Telegram & Gazette

Gay couples came one step closer Friday to having civil unions in Colorado after another Republican-led House committee approved legislation that appears to have enough support to get to the governor's desk.

One more committe vote (appropriations) and if it passes then it goes to the full House for a vote. The legislative session ends Wednesday, so the clock is ticking.

Republicans have a 33-32 vote advantage in the House. But supporters say they have enough votes for passage.
Hmmm. Let's see. One Republican on the Judiciary Committee bucked the party to let Civil Unions pass. Then another Republican on the Finance Committee bucked the party to let Civil Unions pass. We still need one more Republican on the Appropriations Committee to buck the party. And that vote has already been identified.

If that happens, there will be 32 Democrats and at least 3 Republicans in favor. The bigots from Colorado Springs will be working overtime to bring the three Republicans back-in-line. But it doesn't look good for them....

The only question left is how many committees can they assign one bill to to avoid letting it reach the floor?

The 2 republicans who voted for it so far are both women who are not running for reelection; let's see if that holds true in the appropriations committee was well. It's a shame they only find their courage to vote for equality when they know they won't have to answer to the voters in their party. But I'll take the votes all the same.

The most likely GOP on the finance committee to vote for the civil unions bill are:

Cheri Gerou (member United Church of Christ)
Jon Becker (not running for re-election)

Let the games begin!

Turns out Rep Gerou is on record in the past as saying she supports civil unions. I could have saved myself the time of looking up every GOP member by just googling it. But at least I guessed right.

Or you could have read the article that you're commenting on.:)

Hope you're having a great day in the Banana Republic of Michigan.

That would have been too easy! I hang my head in shame for not doing what I frequently chastize others for. Do I get any points for my deductive reasoning? Did the article happen to mention when the appropriations committee is going to vote?

CO is home to a lot of the national, fundie, direct mail, anti gay type organizations. Getting even civil unions there shows how far glbt rights have come.

The only time-frame that I'm aware of is that the legislative session ends Wednesday. I don't know if that means the committee has to vote by then, or if they can just let it lapse with the session. Since the bill came from the Senate, it seems courteous to either pass or kill it with a vote, don't you think?

The House leader said he'll schedule a vote for it, but they've lied before. I guess we'll know by Wednesday.

You are probably aware that Colorado has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. So introducing civil unions until such time as that constitutional amendment can be invalidated is a giant step forward.

Gays in Colorado were already sent to back--along with the cattle. It's really not useful to take a negative view of whatever progress is possible.

Let's vote on whether to allow Catholics to marry.

Let's vote on whether to allow left-handed people to marry.

Let's vote on whether to allow redheaded people to marry.
