Gomez deal looking good

Carlos Gomez has been a Twin for only one month, but the center fielder, who doesn't turn 23 until December, has demonstrated why the New York Mets were reluctant to part with him in the Johan Santana trade in ...

Right on, John Carlson!! We don't need a bunch of new laws to make this a better society-- we just need to get serious about enforcing the laws we already have. It seems kind of pointless to expect the citizens to respect the laws when even the government doesn't consider them worth enforcing.

John Winslow: European gas prices have ALWAYS been higher than ours by at LEAST a couple of bucks. If it's only $5 in Europe, that's not double what it has been here in the US in the last 6 years. Why has our gas prices doubled but not other country's gas prices?

I don't know why, but I spent 1/2 hour last night watching the channel 17 legslative debate about making not wearing seatbelts a primary "pull-over" defense. Some Dems were against it with good reasons and some Republicans were for it for some good reasons.

I don't follow the law regarding seat belt wearing, lights on when it rains, stopping for pedestrians, etc. because I'm afraid I'm going to get caught (last resort), but because it's the right thing to do for myself and others. As I watched the primary seat belt law being debated last night, I firmly drew that same conclusion.

John Winslow, Dems aren't stalling refineries. IF there was money to be made they would be built. Consider the dwindling oil supplies as a more likely reason. Oil companies know how much oil they have left, I'd take the "no new refineries" issue as more of a sign of what's to come- sooner than we like to think.

Real ID is becomming the only way we can protect citizens from being disenfranchised. If there was a GPS trackable chip or other invasive technology embedded in the card I'd feel differently myself, but this is not the case in this bill. There is always the potential for the 'slippery slope syndrome' to push us in the direction of embedded evil, but that's where voters need to be conscientious about whom they elect. I see no other way to prove citizenship as the only LEGAL ID's are Passports and Military ID's (No, drivers licenses are only legally for driving).

Mr. Carlson of Woodbury did you have some kind of new laser surgery or come from Krypton? I'm astonished by your excellent vision when it comes to spotting unlicensed, and uninsured drivers. "You see them everyday impeding traffic and violating the rules of the road." You can like see inside wallets, and glove compartments so you know if their licensed or have insurance? What's your secret? Tell me so I can stay out of their way.

I'm all for a National ID card.
1. National Security-Prevents/Impeeds terorist acts(chemical, biological, radia logical and germ warfare).
2. Immigration control-Lowers our medical costs, protects our LGAL driving privelege, and lowers our insurance rates.
3. Protect our voting rights.
These are only three but I think ther'e the most important.

According to the EIA, existing US refineries are operating at 85% capacity. And consumption in the US since 2005 is down.

New refineries do nothing to help fuel prices.

Further, the oil producing countries have declined to increase production because they kinda like selling oil at $125 a barrel for some strange reason.

David Matthews I agree we need an energy policy but your ideas cannot work. We can never have enough wind and solar power to meet out needs. Never
1. Increase exploration for oil.
2. Additional refineries to meet the increased demand for gasoline.
3. Additional nuclear power.

Demand for energy is rising around the world, according to the U.S. Department of Energy and the International Energy Administration. Data show global demand for oil and natural gas will likely grow 45% by 2030 compared with 2006. The Department of Interior estimates there are 112 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil beneath U.S. federal lands and coastal waters. That’s enough oil to fuel 60 million cars for 60 years, when you take into account the average yield of gasoline from a barrel of crude oil and the average number of gallons of gasoline consumed annually by a passenger vehicle.

Ha, dwindling? We have about 5-6 times the oil left in the U.S. alone than we have used in our entire history as a nation. It's not about the cost-benefit, ROI or any other accounting terms you care to use. It's about regulations, the extremist eco-lobby, trading votes for America's future and the Dems ARE driving it with some 'sold out' Repubs jumping on-board. It's also about controlling our behavior to conform to the beliefs of these America haters. The next thing you'll probably write about is 'global warming, right? Please, there isn't any.

Gee Connie. Where was your access to the convention so protesters messages are heard during the last couple Democratic conventions?
You know, the ones where the Democrats literally fenced in and confined the protesters several blocks and out of eye sight from their convention?
Would want double standards now, would we?

You can check for this kind of data. It's available at the State of MN wed site if you look in the Public Safety area. Read it a month ago or so, but it's there. You can read, can't you?

The national ID program reperesents a deterioration of state's rights and responsibilities. First each state has an ID program associated with a driver's license but state issued IDs are available for non drivers.

This program shows us that the Fed is not interested in guarding borders. First a piece of paper will not prevent/impede anything. You must guard these borders. Second, this piece of paper will not prevent from entering this country illegally or gaining services, etc. Guading the borders and enforcing existing laws will. Third, no politician is interested in protecting voting rights. Today, you can show up at a precinct and vote without ID if you have someone to vouch for you or a billing reciept. This new piece of paper will not change that. You see, according to our civic leaders, what really disenfranchises voters is providing State issued IDs with pictures.

This is just another expensive boondoggle bent on raising revenue from prople who already follow the law.

Hmmm, old data? There's 503 billion barrels under ND, MT alone that will cost about $16 per barrel to capture it and another projected 120 billion on the immediate coastal areas with untold amounts using deep-water drilling further out. I believe it was the USGS who recently said there's 3 trillion barrels globally.

We NEED to develop new energy technologies, but that's going to take time. For global economic and humanitarian reasons we need to use some of the oil we have during the development interim and stop converting subsidized food into further subsidized inefficient fuel that requires more energy to produce than it provides. Producing one average SUV tank of ethanol requires enough grain to feed one person for a year. We're killing people and the global economy under the pretense of saving the planet while the planet is doing just fine.
