McCain likes to illustrate his moral fiber by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam . And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year- old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children. But there is another Mrs. McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam 's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news. But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969.

Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter. Today, she stands at just 5' 4' in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.'

In 1979 - while still married to Carol - he met Cindy at a cocktail party in Hawaii . Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage. Some of McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centered womanizer who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veterans' rights,
said:'I have been following John McCain's career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is -deceit.'

When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it. Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.'

McCain is the classic opportunist. He's always reaching for attention and glory,' he said. After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona . And the rest is history.'

Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, and a former presidential candidate, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel - even by the standards of modern politics.

McCain gave a nice speech last night, it was a motivational speech definitely to a partisan crowd, but didn't bother to mention HOW he was going to change anything.

Pretty much exactly the same type of stuff that he and others critize Obama for.

Here's one example I can think of: When he spoke about fighting for the autistic kid in Franklin County. What is he going to do for that kid and other autistic kids? He didn't mention it.

I was very surprised he got applause for wanting to use government money to keep peoples' salaries the same when they lose their job, then get retrained, then get another job if it doesn't pay what the original did.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not a conservative nor Republican ideaology, is it?

Once again, he failed to speak about his proposed policies, how he will implement them, and how he is expecting them to work.

Especially in regards to energy, immigration, and foreign to name a few.

Still wondering who to vote for. Neither don't seem to have a real game plan for this country and the ability to reveal it to the people.

It *is* a sad story.

Certainly shows some callousness on the part of the Senator.

Patty,
You have no idea why he divorced his first wife. Neither do any of us know for sure. I truly believe he was following his heart and being honest. Maybe 5 years spent in a hole being brutilized had something to do with his estrangement. Unless you know someone who has experienced what he did, you cannot speak for him. How sad that you use this tactic.
To Dave.
Who do you trust in your gut? That's who you vote for. Who would you want beside you if your life was in peril? Answer that and you'll know. Whether some facet of the new president's administration will effect you negatively is not seeing the big picture. Who do you trust with your freedom, your life?

Yep, John McCain will help Franklin County.

No more federal help for buying firetrucks, ambulances, Letterkenny, hospitals, For John McCain will eliminate all earmarks.

Earmarks have become the poster boy for government waste. Yes there are dumbassss projects. But, earmarks were designed to allow the federal government help small communities by allowing money to be funneled to what is needed most by the people thast are supposed to know their areas best. It is unfortunate that they are abused but there is solid ground between elinimating all earmarks & abandoning our local communities.

Barack Obama passed legislation to make these transparant & trackable inline for everyone to see.

Where would the McConnelsburg hospoital be without some federal help? Rural hospitals everywhere.

Letterkenny has benefited inthe past - from earmarks.

20 billion in earmarlks last year. Our deficit is projected at over 400 billion. Earmarks are but a small drop in a very large bucket. Eliminate the pork - keep ther good.

If you really think about it, John McCain's rant about earmarks is just pandering. No real solutions just an attemp to to get some votes.

Wow... I totally agree with you. And to the other comment McCain does not have liberals scared! I will admit that (as a proud liberal) hearing Sarah Palin speak definitely had me a litter apprehensive. Heck, I'm for Obama, but I really like her.
However, I believe McCain's choosing of her was also part of his "deceit." Look at the "big picture" Americans, John McCain is NOT the best candidate here!

If yoru son came home from war and or war prison and was not the same person, he changed (of course), his outlook on life changed, he may not be the same person, but he may just be a better person. He makes changes that 'fit' his new life. Do you castrate him for it? Do you tell him that he must remain the same? Do you think after all he saw in war that some damage to his wife would repulse him? Give John McCain the same leniency you would give your own children. I bet most of you have children that have divorced or have been divorced yourself.
Leave John's McCain's personal life of 30 plus years ago alone. We are living in the present. Look at the record that counts.
I bet you all thought it was ok when Clinton was misbehaving in the oval office.

I want to stress that I believe NEITHER McCain or Obama are the best candidate to lead this country. Nor do I believe there is a 3rd party candidate that would be considered an appropriate choice.

I do believe that if a strong 3rd party fails to emerge to competitively challenge the GOP and the Dems, this country will continue to spiral into mediocrity, if not farther.

Personally, I think we will have major problems no matter whom gets elected at this point.

this defending the the old dude for the disgusting thing that he did to the first Mrs. McCain is what turns some people off to right wingers. I mean if he didn't like the way his wife looked....go to counseling to fix his marriage...if that doesn't work.....get a separation and then a divorce....a moral man with honor doesn't cheat on his wife til he finds a better looking richer one and then moves on....geez if a 20 year old prettier than Cindy woman comes along now that wants the old man for some unknown reason do we say..."oh that is okay, Cindy repulses him...he should have a new wife."

Would you not be angry if you husband/wife cheated on you b/c you suddenly found them repulsive? Seems an honorable man would be happy that his wife had held down the fort and did a good job caring for his kids at home while he was gone despite that she also had gone thru a terrible ordeal.

I thought Cindy's speech last evening where she said that most woman look for a man who would be a good father and she found a homerun with John McCain....ok wrong thing to say Cindy (although you looked nice saying).....if I was looking for a man who would be a good father...I would look among unmarried men not men who were willing to dump their first set of kids for a pretty face and a fat wallet

Bush derangement syndrome morphs into McCain derangement syndrome. Wacko, you are a sick person simply trying to trash a candidate because your chosen MESSIAH's troops have commanded you to do so. All I know about any divorce is that I wasn't under the bed and don't know any of the particulars but I guess a busybody like you camps in lots of places so you can bring us the truth.
