what b.s.- between pushing horses to race at too young an age , and the use of steroids and opiates to mask their pain and injuries, horse racing is, as it's been for years, a real cruelty to the horse and a big money raiser for the humans. what else is new- please- if you must continue to support this cruel "sport" don't send letters justifying the horror of horse racing. it's exploitation plain and simple.all those tears being shed for Barbaro didn't bring him back- face it, they lost a potential money maker whose sperm counted for millions while he ended up dead. you can't justify what humans do to animals, so give up trying. just acknowledge that you are part of a greedy bunch of bastards that let horses suffer and die for your greed.

What a load of shit, who is the author trying to kid? The 'horse racing industry' is run by a mixed bag of infectious human waste posing as 'professional' owners & trainers.

Some recent healines prove the 'sport' which is animal exploitation in disguise has taken steps backward since the death of 8 Belles:

1. Penn Nat'l horseman involved in murder

2. Jockey Rose suspended 6 months abusing horse

3. Dutrow suspended after horse tests positive

4. AP Survey-5,000 racehorse deaths since 2003

5. World of horse racing, thieves, liars, lowlifes, criminals, extortionis ts,hustlers.

6. 160 Horses Rescued Oh Auction From Slaughter Many Still Had Race Plates On!---

7. Feds probe horse shipment racehorses US to Puerto Rico- Delivery by boat saves money but labeled abusive, Horses Bruised & Bloodied

**********
I could keep going with the negative stories but I understand abuse and profit driven animal exploitation when I see it. Care, who is the author trying to convince, himself.

What a load of horse sh**, who is the author trying to kid? The 'horse racing industry' is run by a mixed bag of infectious human waste posing as 'professional' owners & trainers.

Some recent healines prove the 'sport' which is animal exploitation in disguise has actually taken steps backward since the death of 8 Belles. Or maybe they were always this crooked and abusive but 8 Belles brought it out in the open:

1. Penn Nat'l horseman involved in murder

2. Jockey Rose suspended 6 months abusing horse

3. Dutrow suspended after horse tests positive

4. AP Survey-5,000 racehorse deaths since 2003

5. World of horse racing, thieves, liars, lowlifes, criminals, extortionis ts,hustlers.

6. 160 Horses Rescued Oh Auction From Slaughter Many Still Had Race Plates On!---

7. Feds probe horse shipment racehorses US to Puerto Rico- Delivery by boat saves money but labeled abusive, Horses Bruised & Bloodied

8. Veterinarian sees crisis first hand-breakdowns on the racetrack

9. Racehorses Routinely Slaughtered- The US has a multimillion-dollar horsemeat export business & slaughters tens of thousands of horses every year, including racehorses.

10.Losing thoroughbreds- From the stable to the table in 7 days.

I could keep going with the negative stories but I understand abuse & profit driven animal exploitation when I see it. Care, who is the author trying to convince, himself?

First, I wasn't and am not b.s.ing anyone. You can believe what you want to believe about the industry. I'm not going to argue you the point because you aren't going to be open minded about anything positive I have to say. That's your problem, but I've worked in this industry my whole adult life and dreamed about it while I was growing up.

There are more decent people within the industry than not. People who sacrifice their whole lives for their love of the horses. I know because I am one of the hundreds of thousands (maybe millions, because I'm not sure how many people work within the industry).

If you think that the Jackson's cried over Barbaro because they couldn't stand him at stud, you should be arrested for slander. That wasn't even on their minds. They are two of the most down to earth and wonderful people on this earth. Obviously they are nicer than you for they would never think like that of another human being.

So, if you didn't like what I wrote, then you should have stopped after the first sentence. I wrote the truth, you just don't want to believe it.

I would like to add something to this, the thoroughbred industry worked hard and for many years to stop the slaughter of horses. All across the board, not only for human consumption and every single horse slaughter house has been sucessfully shut down in the USA.

If their are people buying horses and shipping them to out of country slaughter houses, what makes you think it's horse owners and trainers????
Everyone I've ever worked for and with always does everything humanly possible to sell or give their horse to a good home. With the intention that they will be retrained to another career.

If you have read these propaganda pieces put out by PETA, you don't have all the facts. I can tell you it's not the owners and trainers doing this.

Also, what in tarnation does someone committing murder have to do with horse racing? So any and all murderers are horse people?? Is that what you are implying?

Get off your soap box and go write about something you really know and understand.

160 Horses Rescued Oh Auction From Slaughter Many Still Had Race Plates On!---
**********

WELLINGTON, FL-- About 45 horses are now resting comfortably at a Wellington farm, and almost 120 more are on their way to South Florida from Ohio, after a horse lover says she purchased them at auction to save them from slaughter.
__________

"Quarterhorses, thoroughbreds, belgians, halflingers, ponies, you name it."
__________
Members of Pure Thoughts, Inc. went to a central Ohio auction last week, hoping to save 25 horses from a slaughterhouse.
But with the help of Wellington resident and horse lover Victoria McCullough, they did that and much more. McCullough forked out $70,000 to buy 161 horses.
**********
"This project was an opportunity where we could go to a slaughter and I knew I could go and buy them all, and I could send the kill buyers home empty," said McCullough.

Pure Thoughts Founder Jennifer Swanson said, "We outbid the kill buyers for every one of these horses, would have been heading to Mexico on the following Monday for slaughter."
**********
As tough as it sounds, they would have been used for human consumption in Europe and Asia. At least a dozen are race horses.

"Many of these horses here, still have their race plates on, which means they (probably raced in the last 7 days) before we purchased them from the kill," said Swanson.

Now the beautiful horses bask in the Florida sun, and relax. They will get checked out by veterinarians, and soon find families to care for them.
**********
"If we all did this together, soon, the kill buyers wouldn't have anything and soon things would change."

It could be a couple of weeks before the horses are able to leave the farm, but they are available for adoption right away. Pure Thoughts is hoping people will take a look at these horses, and hopefully find them new homes.

End horse slaughter. Many former race horses, pregnant mares, yearlings and ponies go to slaughter where they are stabbed in the spine, skinned and hanging by their necks with their hearts still beating. Canada and El Paso, Texas and Juarez are the biggest culprits and exporters in the world of horse meat. These are American horses being sent to Canada and Mexico. Please end horse slaughter.

The United States has a multimillion-dollar horsemeat export business and slaughters tens of thousands of horses every year.

(One Colorado State University study found that of 1,348 horses sent to slaughter, 58 were known to be former racehorses.)

There are only two equine slaughterhouses left in the U.S., both in Texas, so most horses who come from other states have to endure days of transport in cramped trailers. Usually, there is no access to water or food, and injuries are common: A University of California, Davis, study of 306 horses destined for slaughter found that 60 of them sustained injuries during transport. Some must travel in double-decker trailers designed for cattle or sheep; these vehicles are are not tall enough for horses.

The United States Department of Agriculture has banned the use of these trailers for horse transport as of 2006. Horses are subject to the same method of slaughter as cattle, but since horses are generally not used to being herded, they tend to thrash about to avoid the pneumatic gun that should render them unconscious before their throat is cut.

Bryant Gumbel Investigates the Slaughter of Thoroughbred Horses for Profit

Winner of 20 Sports Emmys® in 13 years, REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL presents more enterprising features and reporting when its 134th edition debuts

If you missed the Debut show on May 12th then you can catch it on one of the other dates below or on HBO on Demand! This is a MUST SEE!

Hidden Horses

Few casual horse racing fans are aware that many former racing horses are slaughtered for profit. When a thoroughbred race horse reaches the end of its career or is simply no longer profitable on the track, it is often taken directly to auction and sold for meat. Because horse slaughter is no longer practiced in this country, these thoroughbreds are now being shipped by “killer buyers” to slaughterhouses abroad, which are frequently less regulated and less humane than former U.S. slaughterhouses. Correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who recently won the 2008 Sports Emmy(r) for Outstanding Sports Journalism for his 2007 REAL SPORTS story on the NFL concussion crisis, traces the disturbing journey many of these young and healthy horses take from the track, to auctions, to slaughterhouses, and finally to the plates of European and Japanese diners who pay top dollar for the delicacy.

Greed and waste greed and waste a continuous cycle that benefits only those heartless people who couldn't care less for anyone but themselves and anything but their wallets.

The racing world is built on the bodies of horses like Eight Belles. Stuffed with drugs, beaten and abused, killed or tossed away when they don't make the cut (like the dogfighters do with their castoff pit bulls)

They overbreed in huge numbers, and that is why the racing world supports slaughterhouses, the last round of torture before they die.

THAT is what happens to MOST horses in the racing world. And no one gets to see it. It is all kept hidden from the losers that put money on these rigged races.

__________
Irresponsible Breeders--

We propose that American horse slaughter becomes an ugly chapter in our history. We propose that Europeans butcher their own horses, not ours.

Two states have already tried to bring the kill houses back and the bills were shut down before the ink was dry. The vast majority of Americans don’t want horse slaughter. The asset was the horse when he was racing, providing community service or being a companion before he got old and lame.

BTW-old and lame horses are not the horses going to slaughter.(The meat men want healthy horses with meat on their bones.)

Sorry, but many of us ARE involved in the situation. The responsible owners have provided for their horses. How about setting aside money the horse has earned to provide for their retirement?

**********

The Breed and Dump Cycle--

How about educating owners and breeders on responsibility? Don’t breed more than you can afford to take care of. Don’t buy another horse if you can’t afford to care for the horses you have.

The folks whining the loudest are those that want an outlet for their mistakes. They breed and breed and when the foals don’t meet the grade, ship ‘em off to slaughter. They are causing the problem and they need to figure out how to fix it. Slaughter isn’t the answer.

It hasn’t been the answer in over 20 years because slaughter pays them to be irresponsible.

(*Slaughter perpetuates the breed and dump cycle.)

They Slaughter Horses- Don't They?

November 28, 2007

INSIDE EDITION goes inside a horse
auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania.

The thoroughbred Soccoro Sky, has the blood of champions running through her veins. Her grandfather was Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner, one of the greatest racehorses of all time. The five year old Soccoro Sky has even been a winner, herself. But you won't believe where INSIDE EDITION found her.

Just five days after a dismal seventh place finish, she was sent to a horse auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania where horse rescue groups say she was to be sold for slaughter.

At dozens of auctions around the country, many horses are sold to dealers known as kill buyers for just a few hundred dollars. Their final destination is a dinner plate overseas.

Hundreds of horses of all kinds are sold at New Holland every week. As many as 15% are shipped out of the country and slaughtered for human consumption. For many thoroughbreds, the end starts as soon as they finish in the back of the pack at the tracks.

Actor Paul Sorvino, who appeared in hit films like Goodfellas, and his daughter Amanda are on a crusade to expose what he says is a cruel and inhumane process.

"If a horse can't run fast enough on the track, he goes to slaughter. So he is literally running for his life," Sorvino tells INSIDE EDITION.

A video clip provided to INSIDE EDITION by the Sorvinos, shows a dealer taking a thoroughbred right from the racetrack to a Pennsylvania auction to be sold for slaughter.

In the U.S. there are currently no horse slaughter plants in operation. But they do exist in Canada and Mexico, so horses are often crowded onto trucks for a long journey across the border. According to Sorvino, the trip is long and arduous. "They're not fed. They're not watered. They're not taken care of."

In videotape from the Humane Society of the United States, a horse is shown being prodded by a rifle before being killed by a shot in the head at a plant in Canada.

The Humane Society says conditions can be even crueler in Mexico. At one plant, a frightened horse is shoved into a small pen before being repeatedly stabbed in the neck. Callous workers can be heard cheering when the horse finally goes down.

"They're just dying in this barbaric, despicable and unconscionable way," says Sorvino's daughter, Amanda.

Ultimately, the meat is shipped overseas to butcher shops, many that even specialize in horse meat, and restaurants that have horse dishes on their menus.

While slaughter seems brutal, Jim Holt, the veterinarian at the New Holland horse auction, says if the horses weren't killed for food, thousands would simply be abandoned, and left to die a slow painful death. He tells INSIDE EDITION, "We feel that it's, at this point, a necessary evil."

Soccoro Sky was ultimately saved by an animal rescue group. Sadly though most unwanted horses aren't as lucky. Sorvino says it's up to owners of the horses, especially in the racing industry, to take responsibility for their animals.

"Think about that horse winning with the roses around his neck, and then one year later he's hanging from one leg in a slaughter house," Paul Sorvino says. "Think about that and then say we've got to do something."

There are bills now pending before both the House and Senate that would permanently ban the export and slaughter of American horses for human consumption.

Racehorse Rescuer-Saved Tchaikovsky, grandson of Secretariat-
"Slaughters Haunt Overwhelm Me"

By JOHN BRANCH
Published: May 17, 2008
COOKSTOWN, N.J.— A thoroughbred named Tchaikovsky, a grandson of Secretariat, was having a tooth pulled in one stall. A horse in another was given a sponge bath. Out the stable door, about a dozen horses shared a sun-lit field.

Multimedia
Audio Slide Show
Life After Racing Somewhere, far out of sight if not entirely out of mind, countless other former racehorses were on their way to being slaughtered.

“I struggle with it,” Diana Koebel said. She is the owner and trainer here at LumberJack Farm, one of hundreds of horse farms around the country helping rescue and rehabilitate thoroughbreds considered too slow or damaged to be worth anything more than horse meat. The rescuers cannot keep up.

“Are we really helping?” Koebel asked as she stood in a stable stall.“I know we are, and every one counts, but it’s overwhelming at points. Can we really fix this industry?”

LumberJack Farm works with a nonprofit organization called ReRun, which prepares discarded racehorses for a second career — as jumping show horses, maybe, or just as pets — and then makes them available for adoption. ReRun annually places about 40 thoroughbreds once destined for the slaughterhouse.

Animal abusers should be removed from the gene pool in the interests of eugenics.

Criminality and psychopathic behavior traits are, to an extent, heritable.

People who eat meat are also known to be more primitive than vegetarians/vegans.

Anyone can eat meat, but primitive people cannot survive without it because they are genetically defective.

Brahmins in India forced Dalits (low-caste, the lowest of the low) to be vegetarian as an experiment to see how primitive they were and many of them ended up malnourished and deformed.

Sounds like quite an interesting experiment to me.

Sorry if this makes me sound too zealous, but I get really twitchy about this issue.

I think that animal murderers are ugly genetic detritus who make our society ugly. Some people eat meat because they are indoctrinated. I can accept that, but the people who cannot survive without it, because of physical ineptitude do not deserve to live. They are life not worthy of life.

In a better society employers should be able to refuse employment to meat-eaters (passive animal abusers) and landlords should also be able to evict such people, the same way that they might want to evict pedophiles.

This is humane alternative to putting them into internment camps. We would also have to deny them access to the welfare system, unless they agree to be sterilized.

Talking of Nazis- Hitler recycled & promoted 'animal abusers' up the Nazi hierarchy.

I brought slaughter up & posted some facts because the author of this thread claims that after being in the business for 30 years he doesn't know owners or breeders who have their horses slaughtered. Then went on to question where the information comes from and why don't people shut up & talk about stuff they know about. So I looked up information, which took all of a few minutes to show proof that the industry is animal exploitation & and when a racehorse fails to win and make $$$$, many times they are sent to Mexico to have their throat cut open & then skinned alive before slaughter. The author opened this can of worms claiming how the industry 'cares about it's horses' I say bullshit.
