See, giving away Cabrera has nothing to do with wins or losses (as we all now know by looking at the standings). The thing Loria will never understand, though, is that giving away Cabrera IS the reason why we are in first place and the stadium is STILL empty.
People want to go to the game to see more than just a winning team. They want a team they - and their kids - have grown up with.
I know the team is playing well. Good for them. And hopefully they will continue to make us proud. But guys like Cantu, although good, don't yet have a connection with me or my kids. So no one in my house is begging me to go and see Cantu.
You don't have this problem in New York or Boston, which is a big reason why their stadiums are always filled. It's because their kids are growing up with Jeter and Ortiz. But Loria will never understand this.
Here's the bottom line - you may have a competitive team when you're constantly filling it with great, youthful talent. But you'll only fill the stands when that talent is around year after year after year - representing YOUR hometown team. And THAT is what you miss out on by giving away Cabrera and all the others that have helped win championships.
