The Marlins ownership group is a disgrace... Miguel should be the guy the team builds around, everyone saw him grow up here and he should have been the player leading the team into the new free ballpark these clowns got.
Trading Cabrera was pure genius. He's destined to just be an overpaid DH and wasnt appreciated or supported by the S Fla fans anyway. Loria has done a great job with very limited fan support(resources), and has provided a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, as well as the BEST professional team in S Fla. Not to mention his great hires and his perseverance in getting a stadium and keeping the team in S Fla. GO MARLINS!

Free?$160 Million is hardly free. However, if that classifies as free to you, can I marry into your family?

Le Batard flat out asked him last week and he wouldn't commit to it.

There's my source. Guess that means I can keep talking.

I'd listen again... He did say he wouldn't commit, he said they weren't going to do it during the season. They don't have to rush to do it. He's under club control for the next 4 years.

In either case, you wouldn't start going to games if they locked him up for the next 7 years... so no rush.

Umm, what possibly makes you think that? When has this team shown any loyalty to its players? For crying out loud, they traded a 24-yr-old future HALL OF FAMER.

Excellent, excellent point.
That said, there are still a few of us true fans.

See, giving away Cabrera has nothing to do with wins or losses (as we all now know by looking at the standings). The thing Loria will never understand, though, is that giving away Cabrera IS the reason why we are in first place and the stadium is STILL empty.
People want to go to the game to see more than just a winning team. They want a team they - and their kids - have grown up with.
I know the team is playing well. Good for them. And hopefully they will continue to make us proud. But guys like Cantu, although good, don't yet have a connection with me or my kids. So no one in my house is begging me to go and see Cantu.
You don't have this problem in New York or Boston, which is a big reason why their stadiums are always filled. It's because their kids are growing up with Jeter and Ortiz. But Loria will never understand this.
Here's the bottom line - you may have a competitive team when you're constantly filling it with great, youthful talent. But you'll only fill the stands when that talent is around year after year after year - representing YOUR hometown team. And THAT is what you miss out on by giving away Cabrera and all the others that have helped win championships.

I love how people compare Florida's fan base with teams that have been arround for over a 100 years. It may take a couple of generations to build a solid fan base and a ballpark 20 miles north.

Hear that sound? That's the sound of the nail getting hit squarely on the head.

Great post.

They have no choice when the fans wouldnt come close to supporting his contract.

I know for a fact that there are a handful of people in this town that deliberately won't go to games (even if they're in first place) because they don't like the way Loria does business.

Whatever you optimists, aka Marlins employees, want to spin on that, then fine. But sometimes in life you gotta deal with bottom lines. And that's a big one for me and a bunch of other people too. If baseball has become the business it says it has become, then we choose not to do business with that person. Because it's a business, we no longer feel that we have a certain "community obligation" to support his wallet.

Yes the Marlins are winning but its not the same without Miguel on the team. When the Marlins were getting a rally going I would be excited about Miguel coming up, Ican't do that anymore. I can't look in the dugout and see some funny little dance or handshake and I miss those handshakes. Even though you really want to win it's nice to see your team having some fun. You want to see your team having fun and enjoying the game. And we do Miguel we all miss him down here.

i feel proud of my florida marlins not matter who has been traded or whos playing.we have been in the top of the world two times since 1993 when other teams with hundreds of millions payroll just got short.i enjoyed seen miguel play as seen other that leave our team before but i beleave that is part of the game too.guys i looked at the new york mets last year and what they did with their over paid team and for me that is the real shame.i just love the marlins and maybe for that i have no bad fellings agains them.we could be at last place when 2008 season end and nothing is going to change at least for me i can't wait to see my team in the new stadium...

we beat the new york yankis in 2003 with half of their pay roll.becouse this team has coj...to play the game...
colorado last year went to the world series with young players so what is the problem i think they traded cabrera for more than money problems and i really dont miss the d-train for nothing in this world.we basically has the same team of last year with a lit of bit of better defense.

Of course he misses South Florida. This are is the closest thing to being in Latin America, with the benefits of all the luxuries, when you have money. I wish Miggy the best in Detroit or anywhere, but we miss him.

30 million from tv+radio deals.
30 million from revenue sharing.

before a single dollar of revenue from the stadium, etc...the team has $60 million dollars.

You know what.....I think the Marlins are better off without them. I mean it would have been nice to keep them but we're doing good right now without them. And no the Marlins will not be out at the end of the season. They are going to be contending throughout the season.

Absolutely oustanding post! I can identify with exactly what you wrote - my kids want to see Cabrera and D-Train play. And Beckett. And one of their favs - Juan Pierre. That's who they have/had grown to love to cheer for.

Good for the Marlins for doing so well. But when the franchise keeps shipping off their favorite players...
