Boston and New York have had baseball teams for about 100 years long than the Marlins . You cant discount the significance of a teams history.

Yep, and you're playing right into my point exactly. you'd grow the fan base significantly if you had that 2003 WS team (which was very young) stay together for about ten more years. Thank you for solidifying my point.

I'll give it to you a different way. Take the Panthers, for example. They too struggle with attendance. But they, like the Marlins, have some talented youth to build around. If they keep their core team together and turn it into a winner, and then keep those guys together for seven or eight years, then after a few years of consistent winning you will see a noticeable difference in the attendence. Does it happen overnight? No. But when you combine young talent with winning, and keep it together for many years, the fan base grows.
In the Marlins case, they've either had youth or they've had winning. but they never seem to keep the same guys together for a long period of time, which means their fan base grows tired (while at the same time losing trust in the owner).
And Samson is already out on the radio saying they aren't planning on keeping Hanley. What is that????

Thank you for solidifying my point. You need to make a big distinction between this team and other teams. From a historical perspective I dont think the Yankees and the Red Sox threatened to relocate 5 years after they became franchises. The certainty of knowing your team is going to be around during your life time I would argue impacts the fan base just as much as anything. With respect to your comment about the 2003 team essentially the team was kept together for 2 years after the world series and attendance continued to stink . Lets face facts South Florida for a number of reason has been a poor sports town , South Florida only supports its teams when they are winning or when there is an event. I will repeat if Miggy and DTRain were still on the team do you think the attendance would be much better ?

We all know our country is going down the tubes, but this is proof as it comes little by little and hits us personally. Of course he must miss hearing Spanish ... he is a Venezuelan and has only been in the U.S. for six years ... and why would he miss Little Havana he is not a Cuban ? Yes , our country is going down the tubes because of whining d.i.p.s.h.i.t.s like you !!

I've read the speculation on why people go or don't go to games. I guess the reason that a large group of morons congregate 81 times a year at Wrigley is to get drunk, hear some fading celebrity sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" and root for a "team"???? that could have been followed for entire life by a 99!!!!!!! year old who has never seen his or her team win a World Series. Yes Sir, but keep giggling as you throw those visiting team home runs back on the field.
When people pride themselves on flocking to see "Lovable Losers" they become "Losers" themselves but none too loveable.
Bartman, Mickey's double, Renteria up the middle, Gonzalez down the line,Beckett's shutout, Pudge blocking the plate against the Giants and On And On And On-----Memories That ARE MEANINGFUL BECAUSE THEY CULMINATED IN A PRIZE!!!! and not just 100YEARS of INEPITUDE!!!!!!!

Ortiz has been on a winning Red Sox team for more than 5. One year or two years doesn't mean anything. If the 2003 Marlins were kept together for SEVERAL years, attendance would turn around.

The Marlins ownership group is a disgrace... Miguel should be the guy the team builds around, everyone saw him grow up here and he should have been the player leading the team into the new free ballpark these clowns got.

It doesn't matter if the team is cheap or not, until that new stadium with air conditioning opens up they won't get big crowds, unless it's September and they are in the playoff hunt. No one came out in '04 and '05 when they spent 70 million+ on payroll and they kept the 03 team together, so why would they come out now. I go because I think it's a great luxury for REAL baseball/Marlins fans like myself to get a ticket and lots of leg room for 10 bucks. GO FISH and GO MIGUEL/D-TRAIN. Say what you want, but keeping a team together for 10 years that's "ours" hardly ever produces parades. Just ask the Cubs.

Sorry, promised I'd never read your crap columns again when baseball was the topic. But I heard a rumor that rallying from a Dodger sweep, and winning 5 of 6 against playoff quality teams from last year to secure first didnt convince you to find positives. And instead you go to Detroit, looking for material so you can still bitch about the Trade?
