Acts of violence and cruelty can be commonplace in a particular culture at a particular time in history but still be horribly wrong and indefensible. I can't imagine Whoopi finding it mitigating for a criminal defendant to say in their own defense, "But these types of violence are commonplace in my southern culture!" Just boosting ratings, I'd say.(Are YOU gonna tune in to The View today?)

Dogfighting and dog torture ARE NOT A WAY OF LIFE IN THE SOUTH! Using dogs to hunt is a way of life. Dogfighting is somthing MR Vick learned in the neighborhood he came from. It is NOT a southern sport and never was. Goldberg should be suspended just like Vick for her comments. A dog is a mans best buddy.

What is wrong with Whoopi!!! She makes it sound like Micheal Vick did nothing wrong. For starters he is not from the SOUTH he is from the EAST. This is also the United States not Puerto Rico.Vick knew he was doing wrong & he is only sorry for it now BECAUSE he got caught. Why would anyone support him for what he's done? He needs to get the fullest punishment for what he has done BUT we all know that he will just about get a slap on the wrist cause he has money. If this had been your everyday blue collar worker we would be locked up for years.

As part of Vick's plea he has to tell all, I wonder how many more NFL players will soon be in hot water. It could get very interesting!!!

Right on Whoopi.!! Finally, someone who can understand the culture behind dogfighting. I dont condone dogfighting but I do believe this has been blown way out of proportion.

Whoopi is absolutely right. Dog fighting is an acceptable behavior in that demographic and is part of their rich cultural diversity. Come to think of it, so's gunning each other down in the street. Maybe if society encouraged the latter behavior (on diversity grounds) the problem would solve itself.

Thanks Dave, You beat me to that one. I believe the Mason-Dixon Line is only couple of hundred miles from here in Maryland. o if NN is the Deep South...Then Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and so on must be "South America"??

I watched the View yesterday (for some stupid reason); she refered to Newport News as "the deep south" and said it was in our culture to fight dogs. She said Vick didnt know any better that it was wrong. BS!!! I grew up in the 757 and I never heard of dog fighting. People in the south bootleg moonshine too but that doesnt mean it is exceptiable. Get a life Whoopi, learn some geography, I hope you are not a dog owner.

It is obvious that Whoopie knows very little about the "south." Newport News is a far cry from what she exemplifies in her mind as the "south." Newport News is a highly populated military city in the Tidewater area. Dog fighting is simply not "indicative" to the area, and is simply against the law.
Drug usage is certainly "indicative" in certain parts of the country. Does that make this crime excusable from the law?
What I find most disturbing about this case is the publicity that is receiving. Wouldn't a reporters time be better spent posting stories and photos of the children that simply go missing each and every day in our country?

Some of what Whoopi said had a ring of truth to it. Now she may had some of her geography a lil off with the "deep south" comment but what she was saying wasn't too far off. Now I didn't hear ot see all her comments but I never saw or heard her defend Vick but she could see how it was something that he could get involved cause of where he is from. Now I grew up in the 757, matter of fact just down the road from the house that Vick had and trust me just because you don't see or hear about something in your area doesn't mean that it's not going on. You're be surprised at the things that you find out that is going on right under your nose. If you look at some of the comments from players that are from southern states alot of them were saying that it was common and that's not defending or supporting it's telling what they saw or grew up around and saw as common activty. All Whoopi did was speak her mind and stated her opinion like 99.95% of everyone else had and just like everthing else some will agree and some will not.
