UCF is doing no different that what UF and FSU are doing, so your headline is a little unfair. The schools are going through some hard times right now. Enrollment and applications are up, but the schools aren't getting the $$ they need to support the extra students they are accepting. Going to college is not a right, it is a priviledge. Just because your parents can pay the tuition doesn't mean you're entilted to attend, which in my opinion, is the way it should be. Kick a$$ in high school, or go the transfer route, and you really shouldn't have a problem getting into any of the FL state schools. As far as cutting programs, why continue if there are no interest?

Its all Bush's fault. Or was it Amendment 1?

Its somebody's fault, just not the kids. We need to save the children. Think of them.

This is horrible.

Just raise tuition. Isn't it a pay-to-play system? Want an education. Pay for it. Or better yet, read a book yourselves and learn. Stop waiting for somebody to spoon feed you and educate yourselves.

Most of the "junk" that is taught by "institutes of higher learning" can be gleamed from a book or other online educational sources. The "old ways" are being phased out as the cost of supporting an entire cast of tenured professors is increasing too much for the tax base to support it anymore.

So all the retards that did not want to pay property taxes are happy?
Now they get to save $12.43 a year and a bunch of kids will become criminals and rob you.
Wow, lots of smart people in Florida.

It's always so heartwarming to see the value that Florida places on education in general, and (in this case), higher education in particular. It makes me proud to be a resident of this state.

I love how the military supplies the school with grants, like the 75 million dollar grant received last Spring semester, for military research, but budget cuts from the government means that we will still be losing programs, teachers, and space in classrooms.

President Hitt gave himself a raise. We have a new stadium. It seems to me that football and status have become more important than education. But then again, who can ask for a University that actually focuses on education. Not UCF student, I suppose.

I dare say that nearly 60% of these students are not anywhere being academically ready for college in the first place!

Today's college students do not care about their education, and they are mainly interested in drinking, I-pods, MTV, and goofing off. They want college to be just like high school without the hall passes and the attendance requirements.

Today’s “adolescent” college student is yesterday’s 12 year old.

So, as far as I am concerned, UCF and the other state schools need to stop admitting anyone who can chew gum and get their name on the application with little or no help!

AND that would solve the problem.

But in this world, the fear of low self-esteem prevents anyone from telling little Johnny that he or she can't go to college.

I say, set some real standards and force the kids and the public schools to meet them.

COLLEGE IS A PRIVILEGE AND NOT A RIGHT.

The engineering department is one of the main reasons this school has had so much success. Research is booming in the department, as more and more professors are receiving NSF grants, other government funds, and private grants. Also, look at the support from outside companies, such as Harris, Lockheed, Siemens, that donate a lot of money to the program. UCF Engineering isn't going anywhere anytime soon and the community agrees.

Dang...I know there's a difference between State & County money, but the high tax revenues were just being pissed away during the boom.

Roads that didn't need work were repaved 2-3 times over ONE TINY stretch and other roads which are relatively new were completely repaved (Curry Ford between the 417 & Alafaya, amongst I'm SURE, others!)

The 'tards who bring up the property tax cut have no idea what they're talking about 'cos the money's there...there just needs to be more accountability (which there is NONE of, regardless of the party in power) and common sense (oxymoron 'cos we're using that in the same sentence as government!) when it comes to spending it.

I guess we'll just have to bend over and take it!

60%, huh? Do you actually have some facts or research to back that up or are you just spouting some asinine opinion based on your own individual experience?
Sure, college is a privilege, and no, not every student is ready for it... nor is it even the best option for every person. However, the answer is NOT to deny access - especially because of lack of state funding, but to recognize that some students in college are there to LEARN skills that they might not have previously had. Yes, colleges are an opportunity and it is up to the students to make the most of those opportunities. It's just a shame when an "advanced" nation like ours can't afford to educate its students!!! It just really shows where the national and state priorities are!

Good luck granting yourself a (legitimate) degree for self-learning. Not that I'm against it but teaching yourself, while admirable, isn't exactly an accredited program.

And, last I heard, UCF wanted to be able to raise their tuition by the the same percentage as other state schools and Tallahassee said "No."

Engineering is UCF's bread and butter, I don't see any engineering or computer science programs being cut. The cuts will likely come in the art/humanities type degress that usually don't land people jobs which help boost the economy anyway.

UCF rejects nearly 50 percent of all applicants. That is pretty selective. The University of Florida rejects even more. There are plenty of people who want to and deserve to go to college who cannot, despite what the conservative talk-radio types feed you.

That grant money goes towards research, which will really only impact graduate studies, and likely only the engineering department. The military is not giving UCF money to fund artsy type programs.

Football budget it totally seperate and privately funded by the people who want UCF football to be successful, so I don't see how that is relevant to this discussion.
