With Same Score, Chinaa s He Beats Liukin in Uneven Bars

After performing her uneven bars routine Monday, she saw her name in second place and glanced over the scores, assuming she was at least one- or two-tenths of a point behind He Kexin of China. But, upon closer inspection, she noticed something strange about the gymnast in first and the gymnast in second. “Dad, I think we have the same score,” she told her father, Valeri, as she nudged him. He answered: “Oh. Yeah.”

There is no way that He should have beaten Nastia in that final...this judging during the whole gymnastics has been terrible...and we have seen time and time again the higher score going to china when it should have gone otherwise.

Nastia's routine was superior to He's in every way...I am becoming more and more frustrated watching these judges drop the ball in gymnastics.

Unbelievable.

Unfortunately, the longer this goes on, the more it looks like the fix is in. This is why more and more Americans are becoming more distant from this sport.

He Kexin looks like she is 10 years old & not 16 years old.

I do not understand why the IOC will not look into this issue!

You are layman, you don't know nothing about the judging in gymnastics. Liukin performed well but she didn't jump as high and some connections between point-winning actions were not as neat. However He did nearly perfect. It's reasonable she wins the competition. Lukin should think what she did wrong or not did well during the games that resulted in the sharp edge between she and He and draw a lesson from it. And you guys should understand she is not perfect enough. There is still room for Lukin to improve. Don't whine every time you lose. It's useless and pathetic!

I'm sick of this. Why must Nastia be superior?? Just because she's American? I think she is not and judges thought so too. Nastia is 2nd generation immigrant from Russia. If she plays for Russia I bet you'll change your opinion again.

They scored the same, they both performed very very well. As for the tie breaking, well that's fishy.
It's absurd to say Nastia was superior, they were equal. They were both best in the world on the bars and both should have been given the gold.

I do believe it could've been rigged tho' it basically came down to the score of 1 judge. It's too odd. Very unlikely a thing to happen.
I'm curious to see what happens in beam. I just wanna see the best performances and for once see who the undeniable winner is!

Also, I thought the girl in 3rd did a fabulous job. From a purely asthetic view her performance looked the best to my eyes.

I would have to say false on your views. I watched the competition myself, and He clearly had more faults in her performance than Liuken. I suggest everyone prays for whatever deity they believe in, that this showcase of pollitical bull**** ends very soon.

Gymnastics' new code of points went into effect after judging controversies rocked the Athens 2004 Games. The new code was ratified in late 2005 and was first implemented in 2006.

A complete score is now made up of two parts, A and B. The first, the A score, or the start value, is an assigned degree of difficulty.I n this instance, both He and Liukin had the same start value, 7.7.

The second part of a score, the B score, is an execution score. Six judges vote. The high and the low are tossed per the rules.

That leaves four scores. Those four are averaged. That average becomes the B score. Add the A and B together and you get a complete score.

In this instance, both He and Liukin got 16.725.

Thus: onto tiebreakers.

The first tiebreak is the B score. Here both got the same B score, 9.025.

The next tiebreak: the judges drop the next highest deduction. That obviously leaves three judges' scores instead of four -- or to be precise, the marks those three judges gave for deductions.

Here, the average of those three judges' deductions for He:.933. For Liukin:.966.

Liukin had a greater deduction. Thus she was second.

Another way of getting to that math: Take the B scores of the three judges from that second tie-break, add them together and divide by three.

The math for He: 9.1, 9.1, 9.0. That equals 27.2. Divide that by three, and that equals 9.066, the sixes stretching out to infinity.

For Liukin: 9.1, 9.0, 9.0. That equals 27.1. Divide that by three and it's 9.0333, the threes going out forever.

Thus she was second.

I wonder how "He" will feel as she grows up and that feeling of guilt starts to nag on her conscience knowing that she participated in the Beijing Games undergaded and cheated.

Will the shame get to her and will she ever give up her medal to the true winner: Liukin? She might not understand what it means now, but she'll "get it" as she grows older and realizes her medal was not honestly earned and thus means nothing.

"lol" states all the rules but seems to ignore the fact that she is only fourteen and her score was way to high to begin with, did u actually see her routine or are you as blind as the judges she didnt even stick the landing, i agree she is good but she should have lost, besides this is not an isolated thing, we have seen it too many times now and not just against americans but china over all countries, very very disappointing, and really very pathetic and disgusting i have seen one of my favorite events in the world perverted and the olympics go straight to hell

She did not win fair and square, she should not even have been there. In gymnastics, a 14 year old competing against 16 year olds is like a pro among amatuers. Had she had to compete against other 14 year olds the she would faced much stiffer competition.

No not because she is American. Because she stuck her landing and He did not. He's routine was excellent but she did not stick the landing, she had an off-balance side-step. As your country continues to excel in future decades the Chinese gov't will need to start being honest and playing by the rules of China's time to prosper will be short lived. It will be a sad but well deserved reality if this nonsense continues.

if all of the girls are 16 or older then great, they won and played by the rules. If the stories being told are true then all Chian is doing is teach their youth that chaeting and lying is a good thing to do as long as you win. You be the judge.

Nastia's bars were better.

Although the bars scoring was not as bad as the vault, it was still wrong.

Would there be an end to this nonsense? Guess unless the American won gold. First, complain about the Chinese team's age, then the judge's scoring delay, then the score itself, now the blame is on the IOC rule. Truly disturbing to hear the American commentator complains that the judges are from nations that has yet to produce a single gold medalists. What will they come up next? Should they copy the US track&field in filing protest against their own false start not getting caught?

In Athens, one of the Chinese gymnasts performs on the parallel bar lost a chance to medal due to a loose piece of floor mat giving away, causing a fall on landing. And the Chinese team made no complain, no protests. Stop make excuses and complains when you did not get what you want. Talk about being sour losers.
